Microsoft: “no plans” for an Xbox One without Kinect

Wednesday, 24 July 2013 14:56 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Xbox One bundles will be made available in summer 2014 without Kinect, according to an anonymous source speaking with Machinima’s Inside Gaming. However, Microsoft has since issued a statement saying it has no plans to do such a thing.

Earlier today, a source told Inside Gaming there would be two bundles made available during the summer next year: a standard bundle without Kinect, and a budget version containing an Xbox One with a smaller hard drive to undercut the price of PS4.

Inside Gaming noted, rightly, that such a report contradictedMicrosoft’s assertion that the console wouldn’t function without Kinect installed. If it will work without the camera, this indicated Microsoft’s launch bundles would be a ploy to get Kinect in the homes of early adopters.

This however, seems to not be the case at all, according to Microsoft which issued the following statement on the report to Game Front:

“We have no plans to introduce an Xbox One without Kinect,” said the firm. “We believe in Kinect and the value it brings to both games and entertainment, and believe $499 is a great value for what consumers receive with their Xbox One.”

Xbox One will release this November sometime.

Thanks, ffronw.

Wow. Doesn’t this also contradict the idea that the XBox One is more expensive at launch purely because of Kinect being in the box? Now it turns out they can’t match Sony’s price without beating down their storage space? Bizarre.

EDIT/UPDATE: Wait, “undercut”…so it could possibly go for less than £349 when this is released? Not bad…

If this turns out to be true, it could put X1 back on the table for a lot of people. Myself included. The always on and the Kinect requirement are the two issues that kept me from being interested. If they remove Kinect….could be a whole new ballgame.

ill get one without kinect dont see the pint of having a camera always on me at all times while gaming, see you next summer xbox one

    #7 2 years ago
  8. reask

If true it,s another disaster pr wise for MS imo.
I mean there telling us the reason for kinnect as standard is to make it more likely for devs to utilise it yet come next summer if you want one without it then fair enough.

Pathetic launch so far by MS at every turn it seems.

    #8 2 years ago
  9. Lengendaryboss

Serious talk: if this is true then wouldn’t people just hold out for that version prompting lower than expected sales.

We all know some people don’t take well to Kinect myself included, this decision can make Xbox One pretty equal with PS4.

But its also slightly worrying they have u-turned on almost every decision, which is great for us customers ;)

  10. Phoenixblight

Typical MS. They must liking going backwards if they do this it will make the kinect a pointless device because then developers can just ignore the kinect altogether because of these two models. Just like Arcade version holding back or limiting Xbox Live Games.

Thats interesting, was pretty sure that I am going to get a PS4 in 2014/2015 when a few games are released.

If they remove all the crap and restrictions like they seem to do since weeks, its actually gonne be a normal gaming console again :) nice

Kinda funny how they throw the whole Xbone concept over board during the last weeks and try to be exactly like the Playstation 4.

They even started to copy the ps+ service a little bit.

If they get this as good as ps+, would be great for Xboners and another good feature.

I would actually buy an Xbone if it didn’t have the kinect attached. This is the last aspect of the Xbone I object to, so if they do this, they got my sale.

Though, I don’t see why they are waiting till 2014, they will surely drive up more sales if they release the kinect-less version at launch.

    #15 2 years ago
  16. loci

Their sales forecast must be really bad for them to do this.
Hope they do tho, it will be hilarious after all they have said about Kinect.

  18. orakaa

Wow… if that’s true, then it is just unbelievable to see such a sh*tty marketing campaign. Sony must be paying some people at Microsoft to screw things up so badly.

Is there anyone at all managing the Xbox One launch and general strategy??

Don’t get me wrong: I do think mandatory Kinect should have been optional or completely dropped (especially with PRISM reveal and Microsoft’ intent to sell recorded data through Kinect to external companies for advertising, etc.) but it should have been like that from the start.

Microsoft has clearly shown that they don’t have a clear vision and/or strategy for their new product, that they contradicted themselves and that they lied (“online connection is mandatory as the system is built like that and this CAN’T be changed” #dealwithit).

So, going backwards on their mandatory online connection and possibly on mandatory Kinect is not a bad thing in the end. The problem is the image they give to their consumers, it’s the trust they’ve lost and the massive PR damage dealt. And as said above: if they really are dropping Kinect, then it must mean that their sales predictions are REALLY that low.

    @ loci(others)

Maybe not, who knows? Too early to call anything yet. Lets keep in mind that a change was made in the XBOX team. So these Uturns could have something to do with their new approach.

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-07-23-xbox-one-could-outship-ps4-3-to-1-this-year

—”Despite losing the headline battle at E3, Microsoft’s Xbox One appears to be regaining some momentum, in part due to the used and online policy tweaks. Importantly, our supply chain checks suggest Microsoft may have the benefit of a 2-3x unit advantage at launch compared to Sony’s PS4.”

  21. lookingglass

This will not happen. Stay in school.

Developers have been told that every system will have a Kinect. To back pedal on that would mean wasting the time and money of major developement teams.

And a smaller hard drive? The XBO is focused on digital content. It’s built around downloading games, movies, and content. 500GB is already too small some would argue and 500GB is dirt cheap these days. Cutting back hard drive capacity is not going to lower the price drastically.

    I’m sorry who? http://uk.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/List_of_Xbox_One_Kinect_Games

    #24 2 years ago
  25. orakaa

@22: you mean that Kinect is as much part of the system as the mandatory online connection was? Even a few days before it was cancelled, Major Nelson (and others, like Mattrick) were saying that it was mandatory because that’s the way the console was BUILT, that “it could not be changed”.

All that, only for it to be completely dropped days later.

How can they be trusted if they say something and then do the complete opposite? How can they be trusted when they say they will not use the data collected through Kinect… and they’re caught giving tons of data to NSA, and admitting that the data collected through Kinect will be sold to third parties?

just like the wonderful Rootkit Sony installed on all their systems…then denied it for weeks…wait..what? we didnt do that..we dont know what you are talking about. I forgot Sony is more trustworthy.

I find MS more trustworthy because they said they wont give any information without a court order and will fight it in court if they feel that they shouldn’t be giving out that information.

Fuck xbox 1, the shitty camera isn’t something that couldn’t have been made 30 years ago. It’s no different from eyetoy or xbox vision, besides that it tries to cater to casual gamers, it’s not something that couldn’t have been build into the console along the microphone. PC rocks, consoles sucks.

Glad they are not unbundling Kinect. If those publishers making exclusives are going to invest in motion and voice control for their control pad based games, or make bigger and better fitness and children’s games on Kinect, they can’t be limiting the audience by having an optional Kinect.

If only 60% are going to have it, devs won’t put money into building on it. This is part of MS’s strategy to get more out of the Kinect, and it’ll only work if they bundle one with every Xbox.

I think you’ll find motion and voice will be a factor in more XB1 games than PS4, and it’ll happen earlier.

    #38 2 years ago
  39. MCTJim

@29 yes and it was 2011 not 2007. The point was people are saying how UNtrustworthy MS by backpedaling the DRM and used games..now the Kinect rumor which was created by some dolt and passed as true..which was just proven false. There is too much false information being thrown around about MS without people looking at the facts.

and Sony just freaking did it without your knowledge….MS took a stance, made it clear and people still complain.

If you dont like the console then just dont buy it.

@38: “I think you’ll find motion and voice will be a factor in more XB1 games than PS4, and it’ll happen earlier.”

That’s as may be, but didn’t we just have the biggest games shows of the year, in which Microsoft failed to demonstrate the benefit of those technologies in games?

Instead, they proceeded to wheel out Master Chief in a cloth (it could have been ANYTHING under that covering, but no, it was the Microbot again…) They also showed us full and deep what bland Dead Rising looks like, when seen through the glass of GoW, for around ten minutes.
Right as, funnily enough, Deep Silver reveal to the world their parkour influence on zombie survival. And we saw Sunset Overdrive from Insomniac, or at least as much of it as the trailer allowed – MSfirstpartylol.

It feels like a dodgy travel brochure advertising – come for the sun, sea and sand, never mind the persistent drilling and “we’re obliged to make you aware that our claims of a room with a view, has been investigated and found to be legally factual- you can in fact, see the bay through the split between the two exhaust chimneys in front of your window, on a clear day.”

For a company that don’t comment on speculation and rumour, Microsoft have been doing quite a lot of commenting on speculation and rumour.

At this time, seeing how meaningless their company statement is and how much it changes from one day to the next, it’s becoming very difficult to believe much of what is said about Xbox One.

“Wait and see” seems the best approach, regardless of what all these curiously uniformally up-beat username-followed-by-three-numbers new commenters seem to say.

Saturn/Dreamcast>PSx, Dreamcast/Gamecube/Xbox >PS2, and ofc XB360>PS3. Unless something dramatic changes, it looks like PS4>X1. Still too early to say. Hence why I am waiting awhile before investing on next gen stuff.

    I’m glad Kinect will stay!

Good, Microsoft shouldn’t back down on this matter. To back down here would cause a catastrophic playerbase fracture between those with Kinect and those without. If everyone has it then the features which are useful for core games can be sifted out from those which aren’t by core game devs (such as heart-rate monitoring for horror games etc). Whereas if everyone doesn’t then the accessory will never be accepted wholesale gamers, look at last years Kinect, hell look at the PSEye or Move.

With that said it looks like Microsoft is standing by its decision here.

Did some of y’all miss reading the second part of the article? Allow me

This statement was made “AFTER” a source sad

Earlier today, a source told Inside Gaming there would be two bundles made available during the summer next year: a standard bundle without Kinect, and a budget version containing an Xbox One with a smaller hard drive to undercut the price of PS4.

After reading this for yourselves what a lot of you got from it is that there will be an Xbox One without a Kinect… Really?!?

But when I say Sony removed the Eye 4 camera to under cut XB1 pricing all hell breaks loose cause Sony said “We removed the camera to give the gamers a choice”. Sony wouldn’t lie to you now would they? If your mom lied to you about Santa who the hell is Sony to you?

The only way the Kinect is coming out of the box is if the camera doesn’t do what they say it would do. Otherwise it’s staying cause that’s free advertising for the Kinect by all those that have preordered the Xbox One.

    #46 2 years ago
  47. Major Mayhem 70

Remember, the Kinect is really Microsofts last hope to bringing some sort of innovation to this up and coming generation of gaming. Without the Kinect all I really see for both consoles is the same thing we have now just with newer titles.

    #47 2 years ago
  48. MrWaffles

This statement exist for the sole purpose of letting prospects know that a cheaper SKU is not coming anytime soon.

Gamers who have Kinect2 being bundle and required are not.

They just don’t want to cause buyers yo hold their purchase or cancel their pre-orders.

I’m coming back with my quotes: as the quote master

“After reading this for yourselves what a lot of you got from it is that there will be an Xbox One without a Kinect… Really?!?

But when I say Sony removed the Eye 4 camera to under cut XB1 pricing all hell breaks loose cause Sony said “We removed the camera to give the gamers a choice”. Sony wouldn’t lie to you now would they? If your mom lied to you about Santa who the hell is Sony to you?”

The majority of people don’t want Kinect and state they would wish to purchase Xbox One Without an Kinect.

What your saying well after its been denied is Sony removed the camera to cut the price to beat Xbox One and even after they gave their stance. It still is a fact. Its conspiracy theories was what your babbling on about.

The difference is one hasn’t happened and one never was happening (and officially never will). The difference is no-one is asserting it and you did well after the denial.

So anything both sides have to offer on the matter is conspiracy theories.

    #49 2 years ago
  50. bradk825

@49 Before someone from Sony said it was to give gamers a choice, a guy did come right out and state they did it to undercut the XB1 price. I read that article long before they started with their “it’s all about choice” position.

    #50 2 years ago
  51. Lengendaryboss

    @50
Company’s words or some guy, i know my choice.

So when did they decide? a month ago? On the day of E3? How can Sony possibly find out MS’s Plans and vice-versa?
    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=574241

    I’m saying its conspiracy theories:

So anything both sides have to offer on the matter is conspiracy theories. Until its factually proven it just consipracy theories.

You kill me cause u quote me and everybody that has something to say that YOU may not agree with. But after quoting a person 9 times out of 9 what you come back with wasn’t worthy of you quoting that person in the first place. Hell, we all can read here. Everybody knows what I said. Copy and paste must be something u just learned.
How in the world do you know the majority of people don’t want Kinect? Let’s not act like five people preordered XB1 and everybody else is buying PS4. XBOX 1 seems to be holding its own in preorders. Have you questioned everyone that has put down some cash for the X1? The camera isn’t all about flailing around in front of it, if I say Xbox on the tv turns on the game turns on and I don’t have to ask where’s the remote to do this. I say Xbox record and it starts recording. I hand my controller to the next person in the room and it can detect who that person is and what type of controller set up they prefer( obviously after that person has set that up prior to playing, but once its done its locked in for that player) Its these innovations that more and more future X1 owners are looking forward to. I won’t say all but in time if the Kinect works properly, those that were skeptic but still purchased the X1 may come to appreciate these advancements in gaming.
And as far as the Sony thing is concerned, fine lets call it a conspiracy theory. Fact, the eye 4 isn’t packed in. Fact, both systems play games. Fact, both systems has it’s own exclusives. Fact PS4 is cheaper than the X1. Fact, the Kinctect comes with every X1 which is why it’s $100 more than the PS4. Fact, Microsoft is pushing the Kinect cause it feels with it, it could further advance the gaming experience and how one interacts with their media devices ( that’s not my opinion that’s what MS believes and only time will tell) For someone that pushes for facts to say that most people don’t want the Kinect, save that bull for the Sony die hards cause I know I’m not the only one to preorder the X1. FACT.
Sorry my reply was so long and it’s a lot for you to copy and paste. Do what you do but I won’t be reading it. Why? Cause I know what the hell I said and I stand by it. Good day. 😜

Well then i have “no plans” to buy your console Microsoft. Have a good time fucking yourself :)

    #58 2 years ago
  59. Lengendaryboss

    @55
By majority that was suppose to say vocal minority. Only from a few Xbox fanboys i haven’t seen a rational person talk highly of Kinect.

Oh so Kinect allows you to talk yourself and become lazy. When i see third parties actually commiting to Kinect in meaningful ways: i just don’t see it.

So its what MS believes and therefore will have to? And you see that as fact. MS cannot lead Kinect by itself until i see others of a rational mind speaking about it: why should i trust MS?

Ok: if given the option people will opt out with Kinect. Seeing as thats not possible they are stuck with it. If you honestly think Sony fanboys don’t want Kinect: theres a lot of flaws in that analogy. Although i fail to see where i assert it as fact. Where did i say it was fact?

A lot of flaws in your post.

  60. MCTJim

So the solution really is: If you dont want the kinect..dont buy the system..matter solved.

I am glad its here to stay. Now bring back the family sharing and it will be golden.

  61. ChunkyLover112

This is indeed how it should be. Wanting a Xbox One witout Kinect is like fish without chips.

  62. fearmonkey

@61 – More like vomit without the chunks.

Kinect sucks, don’t want, at all…..I would much rather own the system without it, thank heavens Sony didn’t make us buy their camera.

    #62 2 years ago
  63. xxJPRACERxx

@59 “When i see third parties actually commiting to Kinect in meaningful ways: i just don’t see it.”

WTF man! The system isn’t even out yet! It’s like saying “When i see third parties actually commiting to the touchpad on the PS4 in meaningful ways: i just don’t see it.”

Considering the life span of consoles now, I’m sure there will be more than enough time to find new and exciting ways to use the device. And I’m also pretty sure that at the end of the generation, Kinect will be a big factor of the success of the X1.

    #63 2 years ago
  64. Stewie_Griffin

If its not fully confirmed? Well, since they have “no plans to” that means its will never happen right? The camera is a lie. Higher price point because of a mandatory glorified camera that many have reservations against. You know what I’ll wait a bit. Yea, its not like early adopters were never screwed for there early purchase right?!

    #64 2 years ago
  65. Lengendaryboss

    @60
That sounds similar to what a former employee said: “get an Xbox360″. Reeks of arrogance. Its not a solution its simply not acknowledging the Xbox One therefore its not a problem solved. Just because it doesn’t seem like a problem to you doesn’t make it easy to pass off advice which ain’t helpful in the slightest. Why don’t MS bring back the always online: get an Xbox360 if you don’t have an internet connection.

    @63
The difference is MS keeps going on about how Kinect is vital to Xbox One: they need prove it, do we see Sony going on about how the Touchpad is vital to the controller? yes the controller not the system.

    #65 2 years ago
  66. MCTJim

@65 Arrogance?..well to each his own I guess. I see it as keeping it simple and if I make a product and you dont like it..then dont buy it. I see it as cut n dry…dont want Kinect..dont buy it.

Well I dont want the touchpad on the controller ..make me a PS4 system without it or remove it and put in a regular controller without the touchpad. Same difference really.

    #66 2 years ago
  67. Lengendaryboss

    @67
“dont want Kinect..dont buy it.” Its not an option: you have to have Kinect: I like Xbox One not Kinect: So i can’t buy it but i want to: if i go by your logic. If would be a half way purchase.

“make me a PS4 system without it or remove it and put in a regular controller without the touchpad. Same difference really.”

That makes you a one of a kind because i have seen no-one make that comment, not even Xbox fanboys have made that comment. No its not for many reasons not worth debating: I will give you two: Kinect is mandatory the Touchpad is mainly optional so you can ignore it, the Kinect jacks up the price the Touchpad does not too much. Hell one more i see no reason to have it with Xbox One, not at all. I don’t like many things but if i went by your logic i wouldn’t own much stuff. Another one ones a made with the system and another is a controller.

Edit: “Still looking forward to each console anyway, be it a Sony or MS Console”

    http://www.vg247.com/2013/07/18/ps4s-price-shows-sony-is-serious-about-next-gen-says-level-5-boss/comment-page-1/#comment-513379

You said weeks ago that you’re “Still looking forward to each console anyway, be it a Sony or MS Console”

With your logic “don’t like it don’t buy it” and then “Well I dont want the touchpad on the controller ..make me a PS4 system without it or remove it and put in a regular controller without the touchpad. Same difference really.”

How can you say you’re looking forward to PS4 one minute and now saying you don’t want the touchpad therefore you not buying it.

Don’t use advice and end up not taking it.

Well when you say “Well I, Glad your one of a kind”: it heavily implies you weren’t getting a PS4 making you seem like a hypocrite. Nothing is taken out of context.

Next time state your doing a hypothetical comparison: cause i can’t read minds sadly ;)

    @72 whole quote: I am glad I am a one of a kind..I am not a sheeple

whole thread is about: Microsoft: “no plans” for an Xbox One without Kinect

one would have thought that is what was being discussed.

anywho..still sticking to my original thought..if people dont want the Kinect then dont buy the system.
