World of Tanks to get an Australian server

Good news for Australians New Zealanders and their immediate neighbours as Wargaming has committed to an antipodean server for hugely popular MMO World of Tanks.

The news comes via games.on.net, which extracted the promise from Wargaming during a PAX Australia interview this weekend.

The publisher had few details to share but did say the server would be physically located in Australia, not just a dedicated internationally-hosted affair.

“We know how important it is to get that ping down even lower, to shave those milliseconds off," Wargaming South-East Asia CEO Jasper Nicolas.

"We’re doing a lot of research right now to decide where to locate it. But we are going to do it.”

The company doesn't have a timeframe as yet, but Nicolas seemed adamant it's fully green lit.

"We are committed to it and we are going to make it happen," he said.

World of Tanks holds a world record for total concurrent players with 305,000 commanders on the European server during a promotional weekend in April 2012; although it's not in the books, Wargaming also claims to have reached over 500,000 players on the Russian server later that year. The MMO has attracted over 45 million registrations worldwide, which is absolutely massive.
