PS4′s price shows Sony is serious about next-gen, says Level-5 boss

Thursday, 18 July 2013 11:01 GMT By Dave Cook

PlayStation 4′s £349 / $399 price-tag shows that Sony is serious about the next-gen cycle, according to Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino.

Level-5 is rumoured to be working on a PS4-exclusive title as you read this, so it’s little wonder Hino is backing Sony’s console going into next-gen.

Speaking with Famitsu, Hino said Sony’s PS4 pricing was, “the number-one surprise of E3,” and added, “I think anyone can look at that and think this is cheap! Putting cutting-edge PC specs into a game machine that costs just a few hundred dollars really brings across how serious SCE is about this generation.”

Comparatively, Xbox One will run you $499 / £429 at launch, and this economist has said it’s simply too high.

What do you think of Sony and Microsoft’s pricing? Let us know below.

Thanks Polygon.

    @5 no conspiracy theory here my friend. There’s a reason why Sony took the new Move camera out of the box. The camera was to be packed in with every PS4 sold. The decision was made after Xbox Ones pricing announcement to remove the Move camera in order to undercut Xbox Ones pricing. Don’t take my word for it. That fact is all over the Internet. It was a bold last minute move. Like what #4 was sayingI think Sony had some pricing ideas before hand and depending on what Microsoft said Sony adjusted accordingly. I preordered both systems as I have both current systems now. But I have to be honest. Sony taking out the camera tells me the camera was going to be rubbish any ways. Aside from Sony, very few game publishers are going to support the new Sony camera if any, due to the fact that not every PS4 owner will have the camera. Sony has taken a good lead in the next generation of gaming by gambling on the fact that a $100 price cut is better than innovating new ideas with the Move camera. But if the new Kinect camera works brilliantly, Xbox could very well steal the next generation away from Sony. Sony will have to look at that pricing cut over innovation as a reason to its failure. So far I see newer ideas coming from X1 than I do PS4. People hate when I say that, but its true. It hasn’t been proven only time will tell if the Kinect (which every X1 owner will have so support for it shouldn’t be a problem) becomes the game changer.

    Yeah i will believe you and 4′s conspiracy theories over an company’s official stance on the matter.
    “Xbox could very well steal the next generation away from Sony.” Did Kinect do that for the Xbox360? No Could it for the Xbox One? maybe like you said “It hasn’t been proven only time will tell if the Kinect (which every X1 owner will have so support for it shouldn’t be a problem) becomes the game changer.”

    “Sony has taken a good lead in the next generation of gaming by gambling on the fact that a $100 price cut is better than innovating new ideas with the Move camera.” More conspiracy theories nice, Sony do not have to force customers to purchase an add-on to invent innovative ideas leave that to the developers who choose to support it and customers who choose to purchase.

    Till you can get official words from Sony saying they cut the camera its all just made up conspiracy theories

    Its a choice if publishers want to develop for an add-on just like its a choice to buy the camera. its not a price-cut its the announced price, as MS said “deal with it” Lets see about Kinect there were people who chose to buy it this gen and there will be people who choose to use it fully. Now the key word there is “choose”

    @15 This is what Sony said
    http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2013/07/05/sony-denies-lowering-the-ps4s-price-to-compete-with-the-xbox-one-by-removing-playstation-camera/
    Sounds good, but I’m not gullable. Sony has been playing its cards close to its chest since it revealed PS4 back in February. I mean since it unveiled the new controller back in February. Sony said the right things as to why it was pulling the camera. The gamers don’t want it so we’ll sell it seperately. Sony damn well knows selling that camera seperately means support for it will be minimal. Why implement a feature when only a few will utilize it. History of add on asscessories has proven this to be true. So essentially the new move camera is dead on arrival. Microsoft is seeking support of the new Kinect is packing one in in every X1 so that game makers know that it will be supported by 100% of its gamers. Why not support it in some form or another. The PS4 preorders are selling through the roof but let’s not act like X1 preorders are standing still. Come November there will be an Xbox One user base and everyone of them WILL have a Kinect. Sony spoke about the Move camera before E3 and how the new controller will work with the camera. They had some interesting ideas. I just find it funny that you throw those ideas that you spent money on developing to the waste side cause as I and everybody knows if that camera isn’t in the homes of the majority of its users IT WON’T BE SUPPOTED. If I was Sony I would have said exactly what they said as to why they pulled the camera out the box. “I did it for the gamers” . Common sense also tells me in doing so the price of the console drops as well. That’s business math 101. Sony knew Microsoft was getting its butt chewed from its DRM policies that pulling that camera and saying its for the gamers sake makes for good PR. I’m just not that gullable. And IGN called them on it. At the end of the day Microsoft had to backtrack on its policies but if you notice one thing stayed constant. If 100,000 people buy Xbox Ones 100,000 Kinects will be right there with it. Seems to me Microsoft is confident in what this camera is capable of and if it is right what will Sony do then. They already committed to its camera to failure. But your right, Sony didn’t say they dropped their camera so as to lower their price of the PS4…. And there is a Santa Clause and a Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, oh let’s not forget Cupid and…..,..

    There was evidence well before E3 that the camera was not included. Not rumours or speculation. Evidence. The idea that the decision to remove it in the hours between the X1 conference and the Sony one is farcical.

    These decisions are made months and months before reveals dudes. Stop being paranoid.

    HOWEVER, even if that was the case Sony still made the right choice, to give the consumer the choice, wheather they want to pay 100$ for something they don’t want to use.

    The people who don’t want a Kinect clearly don’t want to buy or play Kinect games either. That’s their choice and Microsoft was dumb to push that on them.

    It’s the Apps that should push the tech not the other way around, that’s how consoles work. I reckon if Sony are smart they’ll bundle it with the next Media Molecule game, still get a huge install base and those that want to pass are still allowed to do so.
    Everyone wins.

    http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2013/07/05/sony-denies-lowering-the-ps4s-price-to-compete-with-the-xbox-one-by-removing-playstation-camera/

    My problem with this is that everybody and their mamma knows that if the user base isn’t high enough for third party developers to warrant its support they aren’t going to support it. History dictates that as fact. I find it strange that a company like Sony knowing this to be true would spend more money on a camera that it has no intention of packing it in with the launch of a new console knowing that if they did it would have 100% user base. They sure bragged about how the camera works with the new controller and now a lot of those features are null and void without the camera. Does Sony think that gamers are going to run out and buy that camera later? Remember what they said, they pulled the camera cause gamers didn’t want it. They wanted to give gamers a choice. Well don’t blame developers if they choose not to support it. Which they won’t cause only a few will get it. Common sense tells me Sony saw Microsoft getting it’s butt chewed over it’s policies concerning DRM and its Kinect features that they said let’s pull the camera idea. Doesn’t take a genius to know pulling the camera lowers the price. Tell the public we’re doing it for the gamers and everyone will love us. And it worked!!! It worked so well that Microsoft was forced to do a 180 on its policies. But one thing stayed constant. The Kinect will be sold with every Xbox One. PS4 preorders are through the roof, but lets not act like Xbox Ones preorders are standing still. If 100,000 Xbox Ones get sold that’s 100,000 Kinects out the door with it. If 1,000,000 X1′s are sold that’s 1,000,000 cameras right along with it. Developers will support it cause it sees that the user base is 100%. Hard to argue with 100%. People think that the Kinect will be like the last Kinect and Wii where your sweating your tail off in order to play. That is not the case with the new Kinect unless you purchase those types of games. The Kinect (and I must add if it works like they promise) will be a huge spring board when it comes to gaming. If its a bust then that could be the end of Xbox period. But that 100% user installed base keeps ringing in my ear as to why developers will think of new innovative ways to immerse its gamers.
    But your right #15 SONY DIDN’T REDUCE ITS PRICE TO UNDER CUT MICROSOFT, it pulled the camera to please the gamers. The price would have been $399 with or without the camera…. And Santa is real and so is the Easter Bunny and the Tooth fairy, lets not forget about Cupid and…….

    @24 then why are people complaining about the lights on the controller that were suppose to interact with their camera? I really dont care if its cheaper, I am just asking

    #32 2 years ago
  33. DrDamn

    What do you mean then why? The colour of the light is a player indicator (1-4) and can be used to give feedback to the player (pretty useless). Light is used with camera but is necessary without it too.

    #33 2 years ago
  34. MCTJim

    @29 Like I said I really dont care if its cheaper or not or whatever, I was just curious of why the pack in controller has those lights that work with the camera when the camera is not being packed in the box. Seems weird to pack a controller that works with the camera and then not include it.

    Still looking forward to each console anyway, be it a Sony or MS Console

    #34 2 years ago
  35. DrDamn

    @30
    Like I said the light has other functionality aside from use with the controller. What’s tricky to understand there? Isn’t it forward thinking to have enhanced functionality if you have an additional peripheral?

    @ Legendaryboss This site supports what I have been saying
    http//www.psu.com/a019989/
    and then this site supports what you believe
    http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2013/07/05/sony-denies-lowering-the-ps4s-price-to-compete-with-the-xbox-one-by-removing-playstation-camera/
    But I’m going to go with what you believe at the moment cause the second site has a direct quote from Sony explaining the removal of the camera.
    Would it be fair to say that Sony is a competent company that knows the gaming industry well? After all these years in the industry I’d say that’s a fair assessment of Sony. What baffles me is the fact that Sony would introduce a new console and even create a new Eye 4 camera that works with the new Dual Shock controller and yet not pack that camera in with every shiny new PS4. I know Sony has data on past cameras and the fact that they don’t sell well on their own, and yet when given the opportunity to assure that every PS owner has a camera they leave it out. Oh, thats right they did that for the gamers. Most gamers didn’t want the camera and yet they spent money on building one to work with the new controller. Oh, thats right thats giving gamers options. It had nothing to do with under cutting the price of the Xbox One. No matter how much work they put into that camera. If it don’t make sense it probably isn’t true so Sony can keep that one to themselves.

    @Legendaryboss just google Why Sony pulled the camera and there will be sites that support both of our reasons. It just doesn’t make sense to me that u would create a camera and not launch them both together. That way 3rd party developers would support it. Sony didn’t push the issue cause the camera was either crap or to cut the price. I’m being nice by saying it was to cut the price. Everybody and they mamma knows if you seperate the camera from the system gamers nor developers support the assesory. That’s fact. That’s been the case with all the other cameras they created. Minimal support in the beginning then fades to none. But Sony claims it did it cause gamers didn’t want it. Do you think the price would have been $399 with the camera? Yeah, me either…..

    #38 2 years ago
  39. Lengendaryboss

    @32
    Or you can look at the article i linked saying that Sony denied dropping the camera, that right there is the fact, full stop.

    “cut the price”
    Until you can prove otherwise with Sony saying its a price cut go for it, but £349 is the announced price.

    “That’s fact” Yeah thats true

    “But Sony claims it did it cause gamers didn’t want it”
    They can’t claim anything when they say they wouldn’t include camera, that is stating not claiming. go back to the article: They considered it thats all.

    “Do you think the price would have been $399 with the camera?” No but Sony didn’t bundle the camera, the price is as it is, this stuff is pre-planned and therefore nothing is done in response to MS.

    #39 2 years ago
  40. DrDamn

    @32
    Your point was that they changed in the hours after the MS conference. That was clearly bullshit. Did they consider packing it in at some point? Yes I think they did. They made a pricing decision based on knowledge MS had made Kinect integral to their system. It was a strategy not a reactionary last minute call.

    #40 2 years ago
  41. Major Mayhem 70

    Microsoft got it’s clocked clean by Sony during E3 to the point it had to do a 180 on a lot of its policies. But one thing remained constant. The Kinect camera was here to stay. Some might say they are forcing it on u, but nobody put a gun to the head of those that have already preordered the Xbox One. Unlike Sony’s camera, if 100,000 Xbox One’s get sold that’s 100,000 Kinects going right along with it. If 1,000,000 Xboxes are sold tack on a million Kinects too. U think developers will recognize that with Xbox comes 100% user base that has a Kinect camera? You think they might be willing to implement new features by utilizing the Kinect to immerse the gamer? Yeah, me too.
    People think that the Kinect is all about jumping around and getting sweaty and that may be true if that is what the fame has been designed to do, but developers are finding new way to use the Kinect. If the Kinect pans out, imagine the possibilities. One more time for the hard headed. 3 million Xboxes sold is 3 million Kinects in the home. The Kinect is no longer an accessory, its a part of the console.

    #41 2 years ago
  42. Lengendaryboss

    Fine i’ll play along, fine Kinect is confirmed to be a success. But that doesn’t excuse the fact of the conspiracy theories about Sony you and someone else stated above.

    So developers and publishers don’t support the add-on, they will support the console just like it has been this gen and no matter what you and MS say Kinect will never replace the experience with games, the majority of people use controllers to play games Kinect just adds voice control and maybe motion features assuming you’re referring to third party games.

    The majority of people will play their games with their controllers with Kinect being a side-tool.

    Now note all this is judgements based on the current generation and expectations and improvements of Kinect and until i see Kinect used in a meaningful way by the majority of publishers: i see nothing to boast about.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. Major Mayhem 70

    Sony sure spent some money on developing a camera to work with a controller only to side line the camera to appease the consumer. And u wanna talk about bullshit? Answer the question. Would the console cost $399 with the camera? Nobody can answer that yet. Just sounds better saying your console is $100 cheaper than saying its $40 cheaper and the competition has a camera packed in that doesn’t require you holding a controller. Save your argument for those that don’t know. But just for the record, I preordered both systems. I’m just more intrigued by the X1 cause it has the Kinect and I know developers will utilize it in some form or another. PS 4 will have some nice exclusives though. But I ain’t buying the new eye camera cause it won’t be supported.

    #43 2 years ago
  44. Lengendaryboss

    @37
    “Would the console cost $399 with the camera? Nobody can answer that yet.” No no one can answer this because it hasn’t happened.

    “Just sounds better saying your console is $100 cheaper than saying its $40 cheaper” So? you spout more conspiracy theories.

    “I’m just more intrigued by the X1 cause it has the Kinect and I know developers will utilize it in some form or another.” You don’t really know that: the majority of Xbox One developers are saying they are looking into the experience of Kinect. So saying you know and them saying looking into is a big contrast in words.

    “PS4 will have some nice exclusives though. But I ain’t buying the new eye camera cause it won’t be supported.” It could have something to do with the fact that you don’t need a camera play games with or without it. You can use a controller and thats it, its as simple as that, if its a failure thats Sony’s problem.

    #44 2 years ago
  45. Major Mayhem 70

    You have to use common sense which obviously isn’t common around here. No console had the opportunity to package a console and camera in at the same time. The cameras were always an afterthought. Your about to launch a new system and developed a camera that the new controller was developed to take advantage of and you honestly believe they didn’t have intentions of bundling it together? That doesn’t make sense. You think if the x1 didn’t have the Kinect and the price was $399 that Sony would still drop the idea of the Eye camera?I bet that camera would come bundled for the very reason Microsoft is staying with the Kinect. You get one shot at this accessory thing and the best time to take advantage of this opportunity is at launch. Not a year later or leaving it up to the consumer. Common sense….

    #45 2 years ago
  46. Major Mayhem 70

    I know quoting my words might make you seem more intelligent but it really doesn’t.

    #46 2 years ago
  47. Lengendaryboss

    @39
    “You have to use common sense which obviously isn’t common around here.” says the one who keeps asserting that Sony cut the price and dropped that camera when both have been denied, its not me who is lacking common sense.

    “Your about to launch a new system and developed a camera that the new controller was developed to take advantage of and you honestly believe they didn’t have intentions of bundling it together?” They considered it as noted in the article you keeping asserting that it was dropped in response to MS.

    “You think if the x1 didn’t have the Kinect and the price was $399 that Sony would still drop the idea of the Eye camera?I bet that camera would come bundled for the very reason Microsoft is staying with the Kinect.” All this is pre-planned months ahead so like i said before quit the conspiracy theories nothing Sony does is in direct response to MS (It looks that way but is not).

    “You get one shot at this accessory thing and the best time to take advantage of this opportunity is at launch. Not a year later or leaving it up to the consumer. Common sense….” So what MS is doing is taking advantage of consumer? Thanks for that and you are admitting this shows common sense when your a consumer yourself? I say now the common sense has dropped to an all new low.

    @40
    Not what i am doing or trying to do. i am putting your words and my counter-response after. Thats all. It seems more structured. If i wanted to be intelligent i would pull out a dictionary and use fancy words but i am not.

    #47 2 years ago
  48. Major Mayhem 70

    After all you’ve typed, I think you’ve come up with 4 sentences on your own. The rest has been quoting me. I appreciate you reiterating my points cause they are valuable points indeed so I can’t blame you there. It’s taking advantage of an “opportunity” not the consumer. Like I said before nobody is putting a gun to anyone’s head to buy their system. Sony can say what it wants to after the fact that they decided not to bundle the camera but it only makes sense that their initial plan was to bundle it. That’s my opinion and a lot of other people’s opinion that are in the industry. IGN reported this right after Sony stated their price that it was a way for them to lower the price by not bundling. Now do what u do and quote me.

    #48 2 years ago
  49. ChunkyLover112

    How on earth can you tell how “serious” a company is from a price tag? bs – that’s what this is.

    #49 2 years ago
  50. Lengendaryboss

    @42
    Not this time go all way back to the starting sentence at 14. No matter what you say, no matter what others say and no matter what IGN reported: Sony gave their official stance on the matter that as i have said many times is the fact: anything else is conspiracy theories or vaporware.

    Many sites report stuff and usually is debunked: was Final Fantasy Versus cancelled? No did anyone debate? Maybe and they were wrong just like you are now.

    Accept the fact and move on.

    PS: Also the fact that you have now chosen to separate the fact and opinion, makes much more common sense.

    #50 2 years ago
  51. Clupula

    All of this debate over a stupid fucking camera that no one gives a shit about anyway? If Microsoft had gone without Kinect (which of course would have required them to completely restructure everything, but we’re pretending right now), no one would have given a shit either.

    It’s a fucking camera. It’s not going to revolutionize shit and if it’s not supported, who gives a flying fuck?

    #51 2 years ago
  52. Major Mayhem 70

    Testy ain’t we? Can always tell when you have fanboys on the rope. Come one come all. Microsoft gave their official stance as well and at least I give them credit for admiting why they did a 180. Sony thinks consumers are dumb and can’t put two n two together (well they are right about some of their consumers being dumb). It’s all good though. Still getting both systems and I’ll play great games on both. Truth is I’m glad Sony recognized that the new Eye 4 was bullshit and dropped the idea of packaging it with the Excellent PS4 which caused them to lower the price. Cause we all have to agree that if the bullshit camera stayed the price would be over$399. Why?!? Cause that’s COMMON SENSE my friends. Good day :)

    #52 2 years ago
  53. Lengendaryboss

    Sony did the same about the camera, but whatever suits you.

    Not a fanboy BTW just fighting with facts, something you are incapable of.
