Deus Ex: The Fall - Square promises to fix jailbreaking issue

If you have jailbroken your iOS device, you're in for a shock - Deus Ex: The Fall won't let you fire weapons; however, Square has said it plans to fix the issue.

Update:

Square Enix has apologized for not mentioning the jailbrak restriction in advance and plans to fix the issue with an update, although at present there isn't an ETA.

Here's the full statement on the matter handed to Eurogamer:

“We have not been clear in our communication earlier this week when we launched Deus Ex: The Fall. We did not state clearly that the game would not support jailbroken devices and so we will be switching this off via an update, so that all the supported iOS devices will be able to play the game in the near future."

"We feel it's the right thing to do in this situation and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. No customer should be out of pocket when we were not clear from the start, so we'll get the game updated as soon as possible so that everyone who wants to play Deus Ex: The Fall can do regardless of whether their device is jailbroken or not. As soon as this update is live we will communicate this via the Eidos Montreal Community channels.”

Original Story:

The news originated with one Reddit user but has since been widely reported and corroborated.

Presumbly, the reasoning behind the restriction is that jailbreaking allows users to pirate games, but it's a controversial move on Square Enix's behalf since jailbroken phones can still run games which have been legitimately purchased.

The first user to report the issue claims to have bought the game through official channels, and that there was no wanring that features would be missing or restricted as a result of jailbreaking.

Jailbreaking is a commonly accepted term for removing various system locks on iOS devices and, increasingly, other hardware. It allows root access, permitting the installation of non-standard software from outside Apple's ecosystem.

Jailbreaking has been legal in the US since 2010 and is legal in many other territories.

We've asked local Square Enix representatives for comment and clarification. Deus Ex: The Fall hit iOS yesterday.

Thanks, CVG.
