Tesla Effect – new trailer shows off Kickstarted Tex Murphy game

Thursday, 11th July 2013 06:06 GMT By Brenna Hillier

It’ve been over a year since we last checked in with Project Fedora, the crowdfunded effort to resurrect beloved adventure franchise Tex Murphy. This trailer shows the newly-titled Tesla Effect coming along nicely.

As you’ll see from the trailer, the game is a mix of live action performance and animation; Murphy was played by creator Chris Jones, although I’m not sure if the developer has reprised his role, since the series has been on hiatus for 15 years. The series is set in a dystopian future San Francisco.

There’s still no release date beyond “coming soon” for Tesla Effect, although it was originally scheduled for a December 2012 launch. Of course, it did raise almost $150,000 more than Big Finish Games asked for, so the scope of the project probably expanded a little.

Thanks, Peter.

This is cyberpunk, it’s noir, and these games were always clever and funny. It’s also real people instead of uncanny valley 3D models. I actually miss that. I miss that period of gaming… you know, stuff like Command & Conquer, where the devs played roles in the video cutscenes and it was hilarious. Those were good times.

This is a game from that era, and really, I just love these people. The actor responsible for Tex is someone I’d consider to be pretty damned cool. He’s awesome, and he carries the noir role brilliantly. His delivery of humour is always flawless, too. If you’re at all curious, I’d recommend going to and grabbing the Pandora Directive.

Really, if you’re sick of the mainstream mush and its same-oldness then I can heartily recommend that. And there’s just a very… human element to the Tex Murphy games. They were and are very passionate about what they do, and it just made it so much fun.

The Tex games were games for amateur actors to find their way, and they did great. Those games were so very memorable. And charm, so much charm.

This, to a degree, is exactly what I miss. It’s not all oh, look at me, I’m a badass-nice guy with emotional troubles who runs around stabbing people. There’s not a lot of room in my life for that, but there’s lots of room for a charming, humble, even silly private eye.

It’s good to have you back, Tex.

    Missed you.

Thought I’d drop in a link for The Pandora Directive. Like I said, if you have mainstream fatigue, do check it out!

    Cyberpunk? I’m not seeing it.

Anyway, did they steal the credit montage from Sherlock Holmes?

Yeah I want this. I admit I never finished a tex murphy game, but like Wulf said, I love and miss the genre a bit. I had under a killing moon and the game had alot of character.
