GTA 5 gameplay trailer was running on PS3, Rockstar confirms

Wednesday, 10th July 2013 13:04 GMT By Dave Cook

GTA 5′s gameplay reveal trailer almost broke the internet yesterday, and Rockstar North seems intent on smashing it today with the revelation that the footage was running on PS3.

Not that I actually care mind you, a game’s a game at the end of the day, if it’s fun the format is largely irrelevant.

But hey look, Rockstar confirmed the game was running on Sony’s console by saying, “Just to clarify for those asking, this particular video was captured with footage from the PS3 version of the game.”

If you missed the GTA 5 gameplay reveal trailer you can watch it again here.

It was also revealed that the Xbox 360 build will ship on two discs while both versions will require an 8GB install. Christ.

GTA 5 launches September 17 worldwide.

Thanks OPM.

    I figured this would be obvious since Sony and Rockstar have their little deal which was announced at E3. Nothing spectacular, but it’s something.

    I’d say it was running on a Playstation 4, there’s still no way in hell it was running on current generation consoles. It just looked too damn good.

    Well, the trailer has a few PS3 buttons prompts like “push L1 or X button” and stuff…was kinda obvious that was on the PS3.

    Regarding the high end PCs at the E3, at least all the game demos that i played was with the PS4 console in front of me, I only saw three like PS4 developer kits inside of a gabinet on the AC IV, Watch Dogs and Infamous SS show rooms. I dunno why or where GiantBomb got that information, seems pretty misleading compared with the reality of what E3 really offered.

  21. NeoSquall

    It looked like shit, it was pretty obvious the video was made using a console version of the game, even before it showed the PS3 button prompts.
    Anyway I’m still more excited about Saints Row IV and its silliness than this “real life heist and normal-life simulation”-thing.
    They better show some story-missions gameplay and details sooner.

    @23 Yes, it’s twice more original and way more funny than any “oh yeah, let’s throw a psycho who dumps a human corpse in the toilet as a protagonist, so much raw!”

    #24 1 year ago
  25. Hcw87

    @24
    Dubstep guns and dildos aren’t fun.

    Original? Maybe, but sure as hell not in a good way.

    And having a psycho as a protagonist is a nice change from the ”nice guy” cliche of todays games.

  26. stretch215

    I love saints row for what it is. Silly, over the top fun. Saints row has never had as much polish as gta though, and I think this gta is going to break the mold. I don’t understand why it has to be one or the other.

    #26 1 year ago
  27. NeoSquall

    @25 Dubstep gun, that makes people dance ’till they explode, is the eponymous of fun in my book, and dildo swords is the best thing at slapstick humor you can find in a open world action game of late.
    The normal sized, pink dildos in GTA:SA, GTA4 and SR2 were gross, but a dildo-shaped sword is so outrageous it becomes funny.

    I really doubt that the format is irrelevant in this case. GTA IV and RDR were fully capable of making my 360 stutter at times, so I’m thinking it’ll have an even harder time of pulling this.

    @32

    Nice try as it has been how many years since that game release? They have updated the engine constantly with each iteration of games since then.

    #33 1 year ago
  34. Hcw87

    @33
    Did the PS3 magically get more RAM since last time?

    I’m thinking that may be why it ran choppy with GTAIV and RDR, and considering this game is three times the size.. Takes no genious to see it won’t have any advantage over the 360 version.

    #34 1 year ago
  35. Phoenixblight

    @34

    Clearly a Xbox Fanboy. The engine gets updated and worked on to be improved. They don’t stick with the same engine build through the years especially since Rockstar put 100 million into RAGE. Clearly once they announce the PC version they will be announcing next gen version as well which this little PS3 vs Xbox 360 won’t matter as the PS4 has more brute force than the Xbox One. Not to mention there is always the PC version which trumps the PS3 and Xbox 360.

    #35 1 year ago
  36. Clupula

    Yes, because people don’t ever get better at things as they do them more.

    I notice you aren’t comparing how Max Payne 3 played on the various systems. The more experience a company gets with a system, the better at it they are at programming for it.

    Unless you’re Betheseda. Then you can’t be bothered.

  37. Hcw87

    @35
    How am i a fanboy when i’m simply stating facts (guy said RDR made his 360 stutter), so i posted an article stating that in fact RDR ran better on 360.

    You’re the guy saying that the PS4 has more ”brute force” than the Xbox One like it actually matters. It won’t until we start seeing games that actually look better on the PS4 compared to the Xbox One. Need Multiplat games for that (like the new Need for Speed game), and we’ll only know after launch.

    To put it short, there is literally nothing that points to the PS3 having the superior version of GTAV.

    #37 1 year ago
  38. Phoenixblight

    @37 There is nothing to say otherwise for the 360 especially since Rockstar and Sony are in cahoots with eachother.

    “we start seeing games that actually look better on the PS4 compared to the Xbox One.”

    DO we need to pull out the DF article on that especially since MS was using “debug” kits which were Window 7 PC using Nvidia cards and only a few titles actually had the hardware unlike PS4 booths.

    ANd DSB spoke about his 360 stuttering on GTAIV and RDR you bring an article on why the 360 of it was better. How is that relevant?

    #38 1 year ago
  39. Hcw87

    @38
    PS3′s history with rockstar’s other games says otherwise.

    It’s relevant because it was actually tested thoroughly by the guys at Digital Foundry.

    Oh, and http://www.dsogaming.com/news/report-plenty-of-ps4-games-also-running-on-the-pc-during-e3-2013/

    Seriously though, enough of the next gen crap, as the consoles aren’t even out yet.

    #39 1 year ago
  40. Phoenixblight

    @39

    So you dance around the question. DSB said his 360 was stuttering, how is the DF article relevant to anything other than pointing out 360 was the better version? SO even the better version was buckling under the weight of the game.

    #40 1 year ago
  41. Hcw87

    @40
    My version didn’t stutter. Also, who’s to say that it wouldn’t if he played it on the PS3? Seriously though, just admit that both GTAIV and RDR ran better on 360, which is why i don’t see why GTAV will run better on PS3. If there are any factual signs to this (like the article i linked for example), feel free to link it, and i might consider getting GTAV for my PS3 instead.

    #41 1 year ago
  42. Phoenixblight

    @41

    Don’t care as I have the game on the PS3 and PC and clearly the PC is the better version.

    #42 1 year ago
  43. Hcw87

    GTAIV sure is better on PC with the mods, but RDR isn’t out for PC’s, and for all you know, GTAV won’t be either.

    #43 1 year ago
  44. Phoenixblight

    @43

    It will be. Stop deluding yourself. Every game besides RDR has been on PC the reason why Rockstar is not announcing it as they want to keep focus on current gen consoles. You would have to be a moron to think otherwise.

    #44 1 year ago
  45. DrDamn

    @39
    See link @14 already covered.

    Incidentally I agree with you that historically Rockstar games tend to perform better on the 360. There is one point in the PS3′s favour with GTAV however. Rockstar are choosing the PS3 to show it off.

    #45 1 year ago
  46. DSB

    I can’t really say how far Sony have gotten since, but it was pretty clear that the reason why the 360 was favored by developers for games like RDR or GTA IV was Sony’s lousy tools. It cost devs more – to do less – with their devkits, than they could do with Microsofts.

    I believe Sony got the message soon after and changed some stuff, so devs don’t have to struggle as much to accomodate them. I think that’s why you’re now seeing a game that looks so much better suddenly running on the PS3, instead of the 360.

    http://kotaku.com/5181620/sony-making-ps3-development-better-and-cheaper

    I still don’t own a PS3 and I haven’t sold my ass to any megacorporation, so I’m really just going on the facts as they appear.

    And to me it’s just pretty logical to assume that if the 360 is under pressure playing GTA IV and RDR, then GTA V by the looks of it isn’t going to have fewer framedrops, unless Rockstar have discovered some kind of magical optimization in the meantime.

    #46 1 year ago
  47. Hcw87

    @45
    It’s strange then that the link i posted was actually more recent than the one @14 posted. Just contradicting stories, and i’m not sure who i believe the most.

    I don’t see why it’s a point in the PS3′s favour that they’re showing it off on the console, maybe it’s to ease peoples worries about their recent history with PS3?

    @46
    How is the 360 under pressure while playing GTAIV and RDR? Did you read the Digital Foundry article i posted? It contradicts what you’re saying.

    #47 1 year ago
  48. DSB

    @47 So you’re saying that if I read that article, the framedrops will go away?

    Cool.

    #48 1 year ago
  49. DrDamn

    @47
    One is an article with quotes directly from developers about what was running on what and the other is a vague comment from a journalist. That’s a lot more clear cut than contradicting “stories”. The date of them becomes irrelevant because of this.

    RE: GTAV it’s more likely you want to show off your game at it’s best isn’t it?

    #49 1 year ago
  50. Phoenixblight

    @48

    Because the site you got it off got it off Giant Bomb’s podcast which happen on the 18th. WHat 14 had posted was developers commenting on the PS4 because the Xbox One was caught running on Windows 7 and with a Nvidia card. SO they commented on that. Devkits are always in PC cases with the hardware that is similar to the console along with having more Ram. MS was using something completely different to what their console will be released as.

    #50 1 year ago
  51. Hcw87

    @48
    No, i’m saying the framedrops if any will be worse on the PS3 when it comes to RDR and GTAIV.

    @49

    Yes, PS4 lead developers, why would they even admit to running on PC?

    ”The Witness was running on PS4 dev hardware, and it looked to me like all the other PS4 games were running on dev kits as well.” ”

    ”Looked to me” doesn’t really put much faith into what he’s saying.

    Also, Sony has some kind of mutual agreement with Rockstar, which is why they talked about GTAV at their conference. A deal which involved showing the first gameplay on PS3 maybe?

    EDIT: http://www.edge-online.com/news/e3-2013-sony-and-rockstar-partner-up-to-release-gtav-playstation-3-bundle/

    So it’s pretty clear that they were going to show it off on PS3 first.

    #51 1 year ago
  52. Phoenixblight

    @51

    DF also pointed it out that PS4 booths were running dev kits which as I said is all the console hardware in a PC case. You are really just reaching.

    #52 1 year ago
  53. DSB

    @51 But then you’re completely ignoring what’s happened since.

    Sony have improved their devkits. You no longer have developers pulling out their hair to put a game on the PS3.

    Those issues were precisely why Rockstar went from favoring Sony on the PS2, to favoring the 360 for GTA IV and RDR.

    You’re assuming they haven’t taken note of the fact that the PS3 is now easier to develop for? I believe they have, I believe that’s exactly why they’re showing it off on the PS3 now.

    They were showing off the other games on the 360.

    #53 1 year ago
  54. zoopdeloop

    @41 the titles you bring to the table were ports.It is well known back then how many games were poorly ported to the ps3.That changed after a while and we did see games being made with the ps3 as the main development console and ported over on 360,see L.A Noire (among others),which was running better on the ps3 ;)

    In this case nothing suggests that either version will run better than the other.In fact GTAV may be developed for the ps3 first

    #54 1 year ago
  55. Hcw87

    @53
    If Rockstar didn’t have a presence at Sony’s E3 Conference i might get what you’re saying, but just because it’s *easier* to develop on the PS3 now, doesn’t make it better than developing for a console that’s never really been hard to develop for.

    Remember that these new devkits came out during March 2009, that’s a long time ago. Since then, i haven’t seen any game with a big performance advantage over the 360 (L.A Noire was slightly better on PS3 as stated above), but GTAV is a vastly bigger game than that. And it’s PS3′s RAM i’m concerned about.

    #55 1 year ago
  56. Phoenixblight

    @55

    Max Payne was in development for 7 years, same for RDR. GTAV has been in development since after GTAIV release of their DLC so you really have nothing to prove anything otherwise.

    If Naughty DOg, Santa Monica, Sucker Punch can get their games out which are filled to the brim with tech with its locked Ram there is nothing to think that Rockstar can’t. Especially with an engine that has costed them 100 million plus better development tools from SOny.

    #56 1 year ago
  57. zoopdeloop

    @55 bigger or not doesn’t matter.It’s like you’re saying the whole game is beeing processed all at one go.Oh my!!!

    #57 1 year ago
  58. DSB

    @55 I haven’t really been keeping score, but it was around that time that the PS3 started catching up in terms of performance.

    From Rockstars perspective it’s now feasible to develop for a more powerful console, which is not exactly a bad thing for a company specializing in super huge open world games.

    GTA IV and RDR were both demoed on 360. The fact that they’re showing this on the PS3 should really be a clue.

    Pre-ordered Special Edition a month ago, 360 version. Every R* games run better on 360.

    And what #2 and #51 said. The only reason they’re showing it on PS3 is because of the deal between R* and Sony. Just like DICE was showing BF3 on PS3 when showing the console version. They had a deal with Sony. In the end the 360 version was better.

    @65 About bf3, there’s more input lag in the PS3 version, the foliage is better in the 360 version, there’s alpha problems in PS3 version and the Ambient Occlusion is stronger on the 360, but some people prefer softer AO. Of course, both versions suck compared to the PC version.

    After playing GTA IV, Midnight Club, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3 on both the 360 and the PS3, I’m going with the 360 version of GTA V.

    Even if there’s no difference, I prefer the 360 controller for driving and shooting and I want to install ALL the data on the HD, not just the 8 GB.
