Battlefield 4 could get PS4 mouse & keyboard support, says DICE

Monday, 8th July 2013 14:41 GMT By Dave Cook

Battlefield 4 developer DICE is open to mouse and keyboard support on PS4, according to producer Aleksander Grøndal.

Bit of a scant one this, but when speaking with AusGamers, Grøndal was asked if the team would ever consider supporting the devices on Sony’s console.

He replied, “We have mouse and keyboard support for the PC obviously, but I can’t speak now specifically for next gen consoles. But if it makes sense in the Battlefield universe, for a Battlefield game, we’ll consider it.”

Does it make sense? Should DICE add mouse and keyboard support? Let us know below.

Thanks MP1st.

Like I said in PS 2 news comments. Pad users would get living shit kicked out of them by those few KB&M players on PS 4. They are just way superior controlling devices for any even slightly faster situation.

If it’s getting considered into matchmaking options, why not.

Sort of unfair for people who are unable to connect a M & KB.

@4 Unlike the Microsoft box, Sony isn’t using proprietary inputs. (they’re using USB 3.0, and the system has Bluetooth support, once again)
But if you’re really unable to choose from any of the existing USB KB & M choices, well, I guess the pad’s an option for you.

@5 The Xbox One also has USB 3. How is it proprietary on Xbone and not PS4?

I’m not sure why anyone would want to play BF4 on the PS4 when there is Planetside 2 which is free and isn’t in the clutches of EA.

@6 Because they noted that existing headsets are not able to be used with the nextbox, and Turtle Beach are developing an adapter to try to get round the proprietary inputs problem.

@12 I thought that they referenced the controller ports not the console ports.

@11 It makes sense for me, at least. But I accept possibly not for the majority.

@15 I could never get into the whole keyboard and mouse play…but to each his own really..I see no problem with adding the support…but the avg mouse and keyboard are not geared towards gaming like the 100 dollar ones.

  17. OwnedWhenStoned

@16 True, but there isn’t that much difference. You maybe miss out on macros and a few milliseconds.

I gave up on FPSs on my PS3 because I can’t use a controller to play them. It’s great for some genres, but not that one (in my opinion)

I don’t know how they’d balance it with controllers without giving the controllers way too much aim assist or somehow ruining the way the mouse and keyboard works in-game. I mean especially with the armored vehicles…. the aiming with tanks on PC is crazy.

I can’t think of any way that it actually makes sense in the Battlefield universe, for a Battlefield game.

Could we see cross platform servers? Especially if consoles have “KB&M” filters.
I somehow think it unlikely when a “buy on every platform” marketing ethos is still in place. The EA sales team would die of horror if people were able to buy JUST ONE copy to play with anyone…

Absolutely not! Controllers cannot even compare to the speed of mouse and keyboard. Don’t so it DICE!

This is a silly idea anyone who want to use a mouse and keyboard should just buy it on pc

@25 Or buy it on PS4, because now you’ll be able to use KB&M :D

I have no problem with this. I use a controller on bf3,Crysis 2/3, COD etc all of them on PC and i have zero issues at all against keyboard & mouse players. Many of times I’ve come out on top and and also been the best in the server.

I understand keyboard is better but IMO it’s down to the players and how good they are.

I played Counterstrike for PC since day one beta which began many years ago. Recently, Counterstrike: Global Offensive was ported over to the PS3. It allowed mouse support and I jumped on it. Let me say first hand…most players will hate using their controller against a mouse/keyboard combo. I was accused of hacking and was kicked so many times..I quit playing the game altogether. I akso literally feltrit wasn’t fair when I played because it wad way too easy. I could easily dominate a team one on five with the mouse but if I used a controller it was a fair match. I would personally love to have mouse/keyboard support in all fps games on console but many players I thinj would unfortunately feel a huge disadvantage if they’re goinf up against a veteran PC player.

Unreal 3 (on PS3) had mouse and keyboard support and server options so that you could play with only people with a controller, only mouse/keyboard, or both mixed together. I’m surprised this isn’t standard for all FPS games.. Most dedicated PC players are decided to the PC for the sole reason that you are able to use a MOUSE and KEYBOARD. It isn’t new technology, its a proven technology that has been around since the dawn of FPS games, yet it is completely overlooked in the console industry.

Put it this way.. I’d rather spend $2000 on a new PC JUST to play this game with a mouse and keyboard, than have to suffer with thinking about what the game could have been like while playing on a console with a controller. (even though I will be getting the PS4 anyway..)

Sadly most of my friends will probably just get it on the PS4, not because of controller preference, but because of financial reasons in not being able to justify spending the money to get a new computer to play a video game. (which I fully understand and should probably also live by)

I think consoles could easily be more popular with full/proper mouse and keyboard support.. after all, why would I spend 2000 on a new PC when I and many others, will have perfectly good next gen consoles already?

Not to say controllers are inferior, they certainly are not.. they are just better for certain types of games rather than others. You wouldn’t use a driving wheel controller to play street fighter now would you?

Mouse and Keyboards are perfect for shooters
Driving Wheels are great for driving simulators
Controllers are pretty much perfect for everything else

It seems like a no brainer really.
Is there potential to lose customers by adding this feature? No
Is there potential to gain customers by adding this feature? Absolutely

I have PS3 and a high end PC. Would give up on PC if consoles had mouse and keyboard control for first person shooters.

Have both connected to TV. I sit on sofa for both. Optical mouse works great on the sofa cussions. Keyboard on lap.

Some games are great on joypad some are great on mouse and keyboard. It would be nice to be able to have only one system for playing games!

Honestly, unless evidence can be cited as to why this feature should not be implemented, the argument is invalid. As a seasoned competitive computer gamer using XIM to play on consoles, there is no visible difference in superiority of M/KB over gamepad. When it comes to gaming, gamers will always perform best with whatever interface they are comfortable with. Claiming that M/KB is superior to gamepads and should be kept away from consoles is pure ignorance.

UT 3 split up servers for you and even had out set up so if you choose to play on a server with M/KB support and you play with a controller then you done extra damage to mouse and keyboard players and they also started with less armor making it an even playing field, so now if you add this to games so that everyone stands a chance why are all these people so upset, I mean where is the argument we can expand are gaming so much by this. It’s like your afraid of the unknown. If that’s the case then crawl into a cave so the rest can pass you by because I hate to tell you but most of you have played against some of these players using a mod controller called xim or eagle eye and you never knew the difference..

Please, please, please!!! I love fps but can’t play with a controller. Besides the pc is on its last legs just look at constantly falling pc sales give it 5 or so years and no one will be writing games for a dwindling market with limited returns for the outlay of development.

that will be awesome… this will make low budget players like me to get faster into the consoles… you know its more simple if you wanna play games go buy yourself a video game! but for example bf4 is pc based, its the best shooter (at least for me) but to play it on pc i need 2000$pc… i work for 25$ on week damn it :D + saturday i get like 100-150$ on month so how mutch can i save? i’m not paying bills, not buying all the food and the maximum i can save is 50$ on month so i really can’t buy such a pc :) if i’m live alone and paying everything i need at least 400-500$ to live and nothing to save :D thats why i’m buying console :) i was so exided for ps4 but when i found out that bf4 got fixed key bindings for consoles i was like stunned… omg its really true! everyone is playing with the same kay setup wtf :D if there is no keyboard and mouse so at least custom key bindinds so a low budget player like me can get faster into the consoles ;( otherwise i give up on gaming becouse with the key layout i saw for ps4 i’m see myself dying a lot and when you non stop losing on some game that game is no longer interesting for you

Ok, so a lot of people are getting pissed off about this…

some people CANT use a controller (myself included) in a first person shooter. I love the comment above by Primey0:

“Sort of unfair for people who are unable to connect a M & KB.”

if you can spend $60 on a game and $400 on a system, you can spend $20 on a keyboard and mouse combination from Radio Shack.

I have owned 2 PS2s, 6 PS3s, and my PS4 will be coming in the mail in two weeks. Everyone will be kicking the living snot out of me online until either gets a PS4 EagleEye out on the market or the system/games allow the use of a keyboard and mouse.

I’ve played many many many 1st person shooters across pc and playstation and I’ve come across some insanely talented players who use controller only. If their skill lies in the ability to use a controller and not a keyboard, I want to be able to compete equally as well with a keyboard and mouse to give myself a fuller enjoyment of the gaming experience as well as giving my team a better chance at survival and conquest.

I played COD:BO2 online for a full month using a controller only before using an Eagle Eye just to see how good I COULD perform using a keyboard. My average scores were between 2,000 and 5,000 points a match. My highest was just over 7,000 and I felt extremely sure that I was at the pinnacle of my play ability using a controller.

After calibrating the EE on the PS4, my first match i got just under 11,000 points. The highest score I brought in was 54,372. Since my skill lies in using a mouse and keyboard, it’s only fair that I be allowed the same amount of fun as kids that only use a controller. What’s the point in playing a game if you can’t do your best? Is there even a point in playing if that’s the case?

To people who like to gripe about the use of a keyboard and a mouse… why not try it out yourself? I calibrated my EE to work as my main controller once I’d gotten to Prestige Master and I’d moved onto my other games and found it almost second nature to use a kb and mouse and believe me, once they get either the EE for PS4 launched OR PS4 allows use of them inherently, my $3,000 gaming tower will get pushed aside and the PS4 will probably be the only thing plugged into my projector unless I’m editing videos for work.

    My synoptic thoughts:

PS: there are gamers who just like to use kb&m, your system HAS USB why not facilitate the use?

Game Manufacturers: if you’re making a 1st person shooter- give us the option

Gamers: don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it. hating just for hating’s sake doesn’t make the world a better place… all it does is make you look like a sore loser

YES! ALL CAPS YES! please, hear me out, remember console gamers, you guys dont understand the dynamic introduced by integrating pc and consoles to at least some degree. i play a lot of war rock, which is a battlefield fps, and im pretty respected id say and im going to go out on a limb and say, the only thing stopping me from console gaming is mnk support. its my comfort zone, and game panels (logitech g13) is comprable to a ” xbox/aftershock game paddle” and my rat z makes my controller an extension of my body, if someone wants to call me an elitist, thats fine, but my concern isnt so much the bells and whistles as it is the veriety in community and most xbox gamers complain about graphics and play on machines locked on a frame rate less than 100 and then sit and swing d**ks in the “stats” babbling.

if its about allowing the different gaming communities intermingle to that degree, then LET THEM. but my trusty xps is always there in my backpack and i play black ops 2 and assassins creed 3 (demanding games) and thats nice to me. if i could, i would have a ps3 but its impractical for someone so on the move and no means of adapting to a world owned by the lesser humans who use aim assist and abuse the radar…

    @ 41 AcidPlague

Well said. Up until yesterday, I have always been a pc fps player only. But in a moment of weakness when out shopping, I accidentally bought a ps4 with COD Ghosts (not interested in it on pc) and BF4 (already got on pc).

How the hell anyone can play an fps game on a console is beyond me. I spent all day at the bottom of the scoreboard when I’m usually in the top 3 on my team lol. I will probably just use it for driving games as I feel the controller is suited more to those style games than fps.

However, I had never heard of Eagle Eye until you mentioned it and so will definitely give that a go if they release one for ps4.

I am a pc/kb+mouse guy for sure, but have nothing against console players. Each to their own. As long as everyone’s having fun, game on!
