Hideo Kojima really, really, really likes Pacific Rim

Saturday, 6 July 2013 00:49 GMT By Phil Owen

Guillermo del Toro’s robots vs. monsters epic Pacific Rim hits theaters in North America a week from today, but Hideo Kojima has already seen it. And he thinks it’s amazing.

Pacific Rim has not been tracking well in the States, at least not for a movie of this sort of giant budget ($180 million), but could it be that Kojima-san could singlehandedly save this picture from being somewhat of a flop? Tune in next weekend to find out. I should also note that Kojima has really great taste in movies most of the time, so he is definitely somebody you should listen to on that front, at least.

Kojima did not, however, weigh in on whether the game adaptation is any good.

So Kojima’s personal love for a movie is apparently game news worthy, that’s interesting.

  2. Digital Bamboo

@1 Well, he is a game designer, and he has to draw his inspiration for games from somewhere, so I think it’s fairly reasonable to assume that his passion for Pacific Rim may influence some of his future game design choices.

Remember all those sci-fi & monster movie radio discussions in MGS3? Or the cinematic quality to just about every MGS game?

Yeah be that as it may I still fail to see why his personal thoughts not directly linked to gaming is newsworthy. But its not a major issue.

  4. wildBoar

Kojima’s a boss, that’s why! And at least he’s actually relevant unlike Blablablinzki. He’s one of the most respected directors in the industry, it might be movie talk but a movie about Kaiju’s kinda falls into Otaku gamer culture anyways. Kinda. Time to watch some trailers!

@6 If you want to pay someone to say something good about a movie you pay someone who either has a sway on peoples opinions or movie reviewers and critics, you would also have them say it very openly and maybe in peoples faces, you don’t pay someone who directs video games to say some random things on Twitter, also Kojima sell out to say he liked a movie? lol.

On topic, the movie looks really good, but I personally don’t trust Kojima’s tastes, he makes the greatest games ever but his tastes are all over the place, I mean he apparently likes Twilight >_> apparently a “Huge fan”

EDIT: Also Kojima is a very dramatic person (I mean he makes MGS O_O) so him saying this isn’t out of place or weird.

The visuals of the inside of the factory look nice, but the rest of the movie looks like a crappy action movie like Transformers.

Here’s hoping there’s actually story that matters.

  9. The_Red

I’ve always liked Kojima but it’s nice to see he also has great cinematice tastes. Previous Del Toro project, Pan’s Labyrinth, was an absolute masterpiece and this seems to made with the same type of passion.

Pacific Rim is not a director making some super blockbuster about giant robots. That’s Micheal Bay. This is a talented one making a movie about Japanese mechs vs monsters, only using American money and Hollywood’s power to polish it to ridiculous levels.

@11 I don’t see why that’s an issue, we hear the crap Cliff Bleszinski spews all the time. And you’re being short sighted, this expression is a sign that he wants to open up dialogue with Del Toro and see if he can tempt him to direct the MGS movie.

@19, I actually agree with him to an extent. The story is just stupid for the most part, it’s a mish mash of ideas that to me personally just don’t work together.

But of course just my opinion and I will say that I enjoyed Snake Eater.

  21. GwynbleiddiuM

@20 It’s subjective, you don’t like it, a lot of people do. Describing something as pure bullshit without providing explanation or constructing an argument is on the other hand pure stupid. He said his 6 year old could do better, I call that bullshit.

@18 – I love how people who don’t appreciate what Kojima is able to achieve through his games always have to come into threads like this and spray the walls with their text diarrhea, as if anyone cares what they think of the Metal Gear storyline.

  25. Ireland Michael

@24 His comment obviously wasnt intended to be taken completely literally. The point was that his writing is so bad that anyone would could better. An opinion I personally agree with it.

Now, before anyone starts resorting to the obvious jabs and insults, I enjoy playing the Metal Gear games.

I’m not going to pretend the writing is anything other than absolutely terrible though, or that the story wasn’t just made up as it went along. It’s structure is an absolute mess, it breaks some of the most basic rules of good storytelling constantly (show, don’t tell), and its so called messages are poorly conceived, heavy handed, and badly delivered.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. wildBoar

@25 why get so heated over a series you obviously shouldn’t care about then? If you can’t enjoy it too bad, but getting angry about something being popular and overrated is fucking hipster.
It’s like atheists constantly disputing the beliefs of religious people, no fucking point, just tearing down others opinions to feel good about your own.
MGS can be a bit non-sensical at times. But it’s got it’s own flair in that Japanesy crazy way. The heavy handed messaging I can agree with, but exactly what’s your reasoning for saying the story’s “made up as it went along”. Isn’t that how most sequels work? I find it really satisfying how it’s come full circle.
What’s with the hate? You’re entitled to thinking what you wish, but when you’ve only got negative thoughts on something it’s best for everyone if you just let people enjoy what they enjoy, overrated or not.

    @26 Who is “heated”?

I will never understand why “negative opinion” is automatically associated with “being angry”. I guess it’s just an easy cop out way for most to dismiss people’s opinions.

@26 “but exactly what’s your reasoning for saying the story’s “made up as it went along”?”

Other than Kojima basically admitting it himself?

There was no overarching plot. It was never intended to “come full circle”. His bad writing ended up resulting in more and more plotholes with each game. He never expected the story to go beyond MGS1, and with MGS2 the story was planned to be open and shut as well.

But hey… sequelitis. Fans wanted literal answers, instead of the open ending they got (that future stories should be your own). so it just kept going, and going, and going, and going, and going…

90% of the story is explained away with “nano machines”. Its the Deux Ex Machina of the MGS universe. It’s lazy and uninspired, and far from satisfying. Doesn’t stop the games being fun, but its far from deep or intelligent or well written.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. GwynbleiddiuM

@IM So how exactly are you enjoying Metal Gear games if the story is bad? It’s the story and characters that matter the most and the themes that Kojima touches. It is why a single player game has had and continues having debates and theory crafting around the internet and people involve themselves because of that story which you believe it to be bad, overrated and bullshit. Gotta love dem hypocrites.

The story isn’t exactly perfect, but it’s what keeps people talking, interested and involved during the course of 2 decades and a half.

    #31 2 years ago
  32. Ireland Michael

@31 There is nothing even remotely hypocritical about that, because you seem to be assuming that the story *must* be of the same importance to the gameplay for me as it is to another person, that my reasons for enjoying the games have to be the same as everyone else.

I enjoy the ridiculous and outlandish nature of the whole thing, cause thats what videos are great at. I think its cool in a “so ridiculous it becomes kinda awesome” sort of way. I think the character designs are often great (the Fox Hound group especially), even if the story doesn’t always do them justice. I enjoy how inventive Kojima is with his game mechanics, even if the core gameplay in MGS4 felt incredibly outdated. I enjoy how there are countless ways to approach every boss battle. I enjoy the almost endless number of crazy, funny, and original Easter Eggs that are packed into those games.

“but it’s what keeps people talking, interested and involved during the course of 2 decades and a half.”

In my eyes, story complexity does not equal story quality. It’s convoluted, not deep. It’s full of retcons, excessive exposition, plotholes, cop outs and contradictions all over the place. It’s simply badly written. The possessed hand is the probably the most obvious example I can give you of the story’s problems.

I’ll take a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end over constantly stretching something out just because people want more of it.

@IM We all anguish at the thought of the posessed hand. Connotating negativity with anger, I don’t see what’s wrong with that. Especially since you seem to be so emotionally distanced with most topics.
My criticism still goes though, you think it’s bad I don’t really agree. So I fail to see the point in negging about it. My impression is that you seem to feel strongly about this, and in a pretty negative way as you’re so eager to put down Kojima and MGS. Maybe you really aren’t, I still don’t see the point in the effort.

I do recall seeing some article with Kojima saying as much yes, I really was legit curious though.
Personally I enjoy the games the games for what they are, I don’t think Kojima’s necissarily a great dramatic writer. But he’s done some far more impressive and inspired work than most other people in the industry, and I really respect him for that. Even though he has been forced into doing MGS after MGS for a while now.
Agree to disagree, maybe it’s better for the thread to get back on topic then.

@28: No, that’s the problem, the more time you take to look, the more shit you see, until you realize that nearly all of it is just utter dumb shit.

@35: Just another Fanboy who can’t deal with criticism, aren’t you?

“So I fail to see the point in negging about it.”

Well then, what’s the point of praising him or his games? If ‘negging’ has no point then the other has no point as well.

“My impression is that you seem to feel strongly about this,”

Dunno about IM, but I feel strongly about it because it has potential to be so much more, to be so much more fun, to be so much smarter than it is right now.

It simply isn’t and praising it won’t change that fact.

“Even though he has been forced into doing MGS after MGS for a while now.”

Nobody is forcing him. If he had the balls, he would’ve started a new franchise decades ago. Bitch can’t even kill off the main character because he knows the fans wouldn’t stop crying.

That’s his main problem. Hideo “Fanservice Deliverer” Kojima.

    #38 2 years ago
  39. wildBoar

@38 “What’s the point of praising him or his games?”
just read my earlier your comment to Ireland Michael and apply it to your own argument.
So you’re frustrated about the series, I feel the same way about a lot of games man. Clearly there must be some elements you enjoy then, that’s good. Now I dunno about fun, I’ve laughed my ass of at Metal Gear at times, but from a larger POV, the series overall contains some of the Smartest games ever made in my opinion.

“it simply isn’t and praising it won’t change that fact.” -fact = your opinion. And it’s a good thing you’ve got an opinion, am I wrong for having a different one?

Nobody is forcing him- I’d saying recieving suicide threats definetely qualifies as “forcing him” to an extent. Not to mention it’s Konami’s most lucrative franchise. it’s definetely in the best interest of the suits there, as well as the company he works for and all his friends and colleagues. His work benefits all of them, you wouldn’t call that force? And yes his involvement is essential if you ask.

You say he should kill off the main character? He’s already given him a terminal disease and left the last game with him having six months to live and a broken body.. You clearly don’t even know what you’re talking about.

The next game looks to be a bit darker as well so you might get your wish. I can tell you’re just eager to hate on something you know nothing about and a discussion you weren’t even part of, so I feel bad for even bothering to reply to you.
