UPDATE: Xbox One consoles will not include bundled headsets

Thursday, 4 July 2013 13:51 GMT By Dave Cook

Xbox One consoles will not come bundled with headsets, contrary to report that surfaced earlier today. It was claimed that Microsoft’s UK product distributor confirmed the inclusion today.

UPDATE 2: MCV confirmed that the Xbox One will not include a bundled headset, before saying that the source changed their statement to “no comment.” So we’re back to square one folks.

UPDATE 1: OXM has just tweeted the following:

We’re still waiting to hear back from Microsoft on the matter.

ORIGINAL STORY: Electronic Theatre claims it was told by Microsoft’s official UK product distributor Gem that Xbox One consoles will now include bundled headsets.

The news follows Microsoft’s original headset reveal, which said the peripheral was not included with consoles as Kinect doubles up as a microphone. The move caused the company further backlash from fans.

We’ve asked Microsoft for comment to see if the above is actually true. Stay tuned.

Thanks Eurogamer.

I didn’t really care about the bundled headset, but it’s nice to see I have the option. Normally I just use my TB anyway, but maybe I’ll use this for XBL arcade games where the sound doesn’t matter as much.

I really hope all the bitching doesn’t lead them to unbundle the Kinect. Developers making exclusive to XB titles are not going to invest in adding motion and voice to control pad games if they are limiting their audience to 30% of the customers on one console by doing so. Unbundling the camera gave PS4 a pricing advantage, but that’s a short term win. When it comes to getting companies to invest in features for the camera, they’ve shot themselves in the foot big time.

Oh….so its probably not true? For me it doesn’t matter because i will use my Turtle Beach headphones, but it was a stupid move not to include it. Kinect as the mic might work in some games, but when you are playing say BF4, friends talking to you and the sound on high volume…you won’t hear them.

Microsoft’s penchant for back-pedalling is getting cringeworthy now…their marketing and production teams must be getting so frustrated and embarrassed by all this. I imagine quite a bit of work’s been done at varying levels of the business, all of it in accordance with that original plan that would have appeared set in stone for months/years leading up to E3. A few weeks later and everything’s changed. Whether or not all this flip-flopping will affect thing one when it comes to Sales I can’t say, but it does make Microsoft look more like a weak-willed follower than a bold industry leader. I’m still on the fence about picking up an X1 further down the line (I’m down for PS4 at launch) but this kind of thing – even though it ensures me a free headset – somehow repels me more than it charms. Grow some Goddamn balls, Microsoft.

This is what’s happening with the current reporting in gaming, it’s getting ridiculous. Someone thinks they heard something, and they publish it within the hour to be the first to break the news, and then force the gaming company to answer to it. Stop reporting unconfirmed things! Journalists used to care if they were reporting facts or not.

@Dave Thanks for adressing it. I’ve just been frustrated by a lot of the stuff out there lately. There’s been a lot of misreporting about Next-Gen, which has slowed down a little with the death of DRM (there were about 100 versions of that story depending who you read) but it’s still happening. Sorry if I came off jackal-like, I didn’t mean to. Just expressing frustration.

    @47 I enjoyed your observation.

@53 My comment had to do with the current state of journalism and had nothing to do with it being hard to be an Xbox fan, which I disagree with anyway, unless you count being fed up with rumours and half-truths being reported as facts by most web sites.

This particular issue was fairly minor, but there are many examples out there of things being reported one day and “updated” the next. Look at the Zimmerman 911 call. It was reported that he used a racial slur, and all we got to hear day 1 was the NBC spliced version. Then the real call came out for all to hear and there was no slur, and the context was completely different. The damage was done, and the trial remains focused on race to this day despite evidence from the 911 call that Zimmerman had NO idea what race the kid was before making the call.

There was a time when the biggest scandal of those events would be that a large number of journalists told several lies, but today that’s just fine, at least they “updated” the story, it’s not really their fault.

Except it’s not ok, because misinforming people is unacceptable when you’re trusted by many to report the truth, and a complete retraction should never be reduced to an update in our thinking.

Again, the article above was a relatively minor issue, but the trend itself I view as a major issue. Not everyone sees the retractions or chooses to believe them, as evidenced by the Zimmerman trial.
