Xbox One built with advertising in mind, Kinect integral to next-gen adverts

Thursday, 4 July 2013 12:42 GMT By Dave Cook

Xbox One was designed with advertising in mind, members of the Xbox Live advertising team have confirmed.

Speaking with StickTwiddlers, a number of Microsoft staffers in the Xbox Live advertising division have shed light on the lessons learned through Xbox 360 adverts, and how this will be applied in Xbox One. It also places Kinect as a key part of the strategy.

Confirming that Kinect will use voice and facial recognition to tailor adverts on your console, one unnamed technical account manager said, “With the new Xbox One, the technology and Kinect has improved a lot, so that actually the voice recognition, the way you speak to your Xbox and the transition between gaming and watching TV is a lot smoother, and hopefully we can transpire [sic] that into advertising that we do.”

The strategy goes hand-in-hand with Microsoft’s ‘Nuads’ campaign, which resulted in adverts that housed interactive polls, as a way of making users feel like they were participating in adverts, rather than absorbing them passively.

The Microsoft employee added that Nuads, “transform passive TV advertising into something interactive, immersive, and actionable, redefining the relationship between consumers and brands with amazing new advertising opportunities”.

While this might all sound intrusive and that Kinect is spying on users to sell them products, one of the Microsoft employees stressed that the company does not want the technology and its customers to be abused. However, the volume of data captured by Microsoft and advertisers via Kinect is said to be significantly lower than the information recorded by game developers.

“This sort of works at two levels,” the Microsoft employee added. “There’s the game producers who have a different API, so a different set of code and system that they use, and they’ve got a lot more control of the whole thing, whereas from the advertising point of view we have a slightly more limited set, which is designed to protect the user. The company is very keen on protecting the user from any sort of abuse so we can’t do certain things.”

Because Microsoft is wanting to move Xbox One into the living room of families using Kinect, the device can – for example – recognise when there are many people in a room, and target adverts to families and people of varying ages.

Microsoft’s Senior Digital Art Director/UX Designer explained, “Xbox is moving more outside of the bedroom. We’re seeing much, much more people use it in living rooms where there is family, friends, there is lots going on, so there is a context of perceiving the content.

“It’s not like when you’re at work when you sit in front of a screen and your experience is very personal. But with Xbox, it’s lots of people in front of once big screen. They are playing or watching together and advertising is being consumed in a totally different way.”

They added, “On Xbox, the ad is part of the actual experience, it’s not something that is outside. The only difference is that the advertisement we have is quite small and not disruptive so people are not aware of clicking on the banners because they know this is a part of the whole experience on the dash.

“So the users know that this is something that when they click on it, they won’t be hit by something crazy or something dangerous like on the web. Everything that lands there, we create.”

One source called the development of adverts for Xbox One “exciting”, because, “the 360 console wasn’t built with advertising in mind, it was more of an afterthought, so we’ve had to adapt to the technology and how we work to fit them in to the console, whereas this new one is going to have advertising in mind.

“So a lot of the limitations that we have now, hopefully the release of the boundaries will widened so the opportunities will be a lot greater.”

What do you make of Microsoft’s attempts to target adverts to players using Kinect? Let us know below.

Thanks NowGamer and OXM.

You see, this is exactly why i’m jumping M$ sinking ship before next gen hits. I mean fer fucks sakes, where are the priorities. They still have the gumption to charge for xbox live while still raking in advertising money. And what benefit does that have to the gamer?

And super targeted ads that are always watching and listening. FUCK OFF! to that I say.

You ignorant noob. Let me point some really interesting things that were said in this arcticle.

“But with Xbox, it’s lots of people in front of once big screen. They are playing or watching together and advertising is being consumed in a totally different way.”

Key word here is “consume”, C O N S U M E. The wet dream of any capitalistic corporation in this world is to have zombie-like consumers who all that they care about is to buy buy buy, get get get, consumerism in all its glory.

“On Xbox, the ad is part of the actual experience, it’s not something that is outside.”

WoW! Never before was I wanting an actual advertising experience with my products, thanks MS!

And the best has yet to come.

“The only difference is that the advertisement we have is quite small and not disruptive SO PEOPLE ARE NOT A-W-A-R-E OF CLICKING ON THE BANNERS because they know this is a part of the whole experience on the dash.”

Yiiiiiiiha! Bingo, jack-pot. More mindless consuming zombies that their ignorance has reached new uncharted levels.

Seriously MS and industry in general, fuck off. And people who still buy shit like this, please make yourself a favor and be more educated consumers…

#10: Advertising on TV or the internet most of time pays for content delivery. Keeping sites like this one running.

What are MS spending that ad money on, if you are already paying for xbox live service? Not to mention the complete invasion of your privacy.

I can appreciate this gets a negative reaction. But I struggle to find anything in the entertainment field these days that isn’t drenched in adverts. I think, for the most part, videogames have not been as badly affected by adverts as they might have been. Yet.

Theoretically, adverts subsidise the costs passed onto the consumer too.

Yet ONE more reason not to buy this machine. If people can seriously sit there at their keyboards and still say that they will are delusional.

This is just even more nails in their coffin, they really need to sort out their PR team and fast(yet if you ask me its far too late now).

    1) the machine itself looks hideous, sure the PS4 is no arty farty box but at least it has some design to it rather than a square box this needs addressing.

    2) The “exclusives” they showed at E3 majority of which turned out to be running on Dev Kits, or actual PC’s. Also they look nowhere near next gen apart from that slo-mo trailer with the boat and the women. But even then that was pre recorded footage using the in game engine so not real time. This needs addressing as well, saying you are spending a billion dollars on exclusives is one thing but only showing about five of them that turn out to be on other platforms is a little, well silly.

    3) Back tracking on your polices is a good thing for the consumer and means that you are showing your fears and weaknesses. Now I completely hated the 24-hour check in and the used games now that is gone it is great. But this IS where the industry is heading and if someone as powerful and big as Microsoft get scared when people attack “change” then this change will never happen properly. If Sony were doing it as well you can bet that no polocies would have changed. They need to address who speaks, what they say, and how they say it as no one has a clue on the power of the hardware and its functions and policies. Get your own facts straight pure and simple.

    4) Advertising is a great, but using to throw stuff down peoples throats is wrong. Using peoples info and private details is wrong as well. Using it to give something back to the player is the best way possible. Who here wouldn’t mind a game like GTAV for half price if on the loading screens there was an advert for Coca Cola? Or in game whilst driving there are actual real adverts/billboard/raido spots, etc that are real world adverts for real world products which then gives the player a cheaper and more believable game. Not filling up someones dashboard with adverts of crisps just because in their bio they say they like crisps.

    5) EMBRACE INDIE!!! With the indie scene thriving on PC and also Sony now opening their doors and saying “come on in, make yourselves at home!” is basically kicking Microsoft in the junk and giving gamers what they want. A rich library of new innovative games at a cheap price that they can play whilst giving first time developers the chance to show what they can do. Microsoft, SHORT THIS SHIT OUT!

If they tackle all the issues above, the advertising is still a hit or miss and even my idea would not be welcome for some people. But at least it gives something back to the gamer in terms of a cheaper game or even a free game if there was adverts that DONT infringe upon gameplay.

@29 the ads will be on the dashboard, obviously. Do you really think the ads will be in-game? Lol! Also your wall of text (which has been said about a thousand times by about a thousand people) is a waste because nobody cares. People will buy what they want, and a lot of people want an xbx1. Deal with it. Also Sony’s e3 was a snorefest, imo. I was on the fence going in, but sony has zero exclusives I’m interested in. My wife literally fell asleep during their conference!

    @40

To give you an example, when there is a Champion League football game you always see ads for cars, alcoholic drinks and stuff that is targeting mostly an adult male audience. When there are cartoons on TV you see toys and kids stuff, it’s that simple.

Now take that schematic and apply it on everyone’s consuming habit and you’ll get the idea.

@44 lol, I didn’t mention that you were part of that demographic but is commonly know that the industries work like that. Just go get a bit of education on the matter and you’ll get the point. You are probably too naive or too ignorant…

@47 you don’t know me to say what I am. I doubt you even know the definition of the words naive and ignorant. I am plenty “educated” on the matter. Educated enough to know that you speak foolishness. People cannot be made into “impulse buyers”. Being impulsive is a behavioral trait acquired at birth. Unless these ads can alter your brain chemistry, they can’t “make” you into anything.

@44 – Do you not believe that impulse purchases are real? How about subliminal messages/advertising?

I don’t think Marco was implying “I’ve never in my life bought anything I didn’t need or want” but you would have at one point or other been swayed by advertising. You may have bought one brand over another for example due to advertising you saw though made no connection to said advert.

You need to open your mind if you think advertising affects only “weak-minded” people.

@21 Bingo! Ads on Xbox are going to benefit Microsoft and their partners and only them. On the internet each site and their owners + the advertisers are winning money, there’s not a big company behind everything (maybe google, but that’s not the point) earning shitloads of money because they pop up an ad in your face.

If a company is doing something that is very bad for gaming, we won’t just accept it, we’ll fight to change it. This is a common practice (to fight for change) in the world. Idk when and why society decided to take everything up the a**.

  78. LordDjinn

@CyberMarco Once again, truly deserving of digital goods. they advertise their games, and shit on PSN. sometimes their tv apps.

@ChunkyLover112 if you are referring to the article, rather than just nearly everything a lot of people are pissed off about Microsoft’s handling of their new console, then let me spell it out for you, they are stuffing anything they can think of to make this console more appealing to win back the people that they lost!

Reversed DRM, strange usage for the kinect and not being able to turn it off, leaving everything behind a paywall so you may use your already paid for tv apps, throwing in headsets for whatever reason, insulting those gamers that didnt like the check-in (get an xbox 360) the horrible damage control..

    #78 2 years ago
  79. Ireland Michael

@76 Thats because it would take too much for most to stop scoffing down the Doritos and Mountain Dew, get up off the couch, take off the headset, and actually take action.

    #79 2 years ago
  80. salarta

Well no shit, I thought it was pretty obvious that the forced inclusion of Kinect as a requirement for system operation made it obvious that advertising was the core reason for its presence. Nice to see them admit it though.

I’ve a minor issue about how the wrong context could be taken with one of the quotes:

“hopefully we can transpire [sic] that into advertising that we do.”

Rather than being “we can integrate advertising into that”, it might mean “hopefully we’ll be able to convey this experience when we produce adverts about it”.

Minor point, the Acct Manager does say “whereas this new one is going to have advertising in mind” later.

@78 absolutely. And you don’t need a high concept algorithm to tell you that if I’m using PS3, then learning about game/entertainment selections I may have overlooked, or are on offer, is unlikely to prove unwelcome. Sony’s entertainment network is one of the better parts of their range, after games.

  93. Krakn3dfx1

Guys, this is going to make games cheaper and the air you breathe cleaner, beautiful women will want to talk to you…ok, maybe not, but it will make your skin clear up just by standing in front of it as much as possible. We all want clearer skin and cheaper games, right? I’m just saying, MS is offering that to you, or at least they’re offering the potential that it could be true seeing that there’s no measurable way for at least a couple of years to prove otherwise. They’re in this for the long game.

    #93 2 years ago
  94. The_Red

Why they keep doing this? Yes, maybe Kinect 2 was indeed made that way AND is integral to adverts. That’s bad but you DO NOT come out and SAY IT.

It’s like EA screaming “Sim City’s online was integral in our DRM plans”. That was true but they talked about always-online being part of design / calculations.

Take my advice: sit down, take a deep breath, and think about the how much you’re hurting the community you love so much. Last time I checked being a fanboy to anything makes YOU biased. I’m with lookingglass with this. I really don’t care. Sometimes ads can actually help me find material that I actually want, hell thats what their there for. That part i can agree about, Ads are very useful for finding about stuff i wouldn’t normally find out by myself. Like finding out what song is used in an ad or another product in a background. Ads actually can motivate you to find out about a product.

I can obviously only speak for myself, but I find the thoughts of an always on camera and mic watching me and my family disturbing. Heck, even if they want to monitor us for the purpose of sending targeted ads that’s still creepy as heck in my book.

Here is the thing though, if Microsoft and these advert agencies have faith that this service will be of genuine benefit to consumers, then why not allow it to be turned off ? If it is really so great then most people will want to use it surely ? In which case a simple ‘Do you want adverts: yes/no’ in the XboxOne options screen should suffice. That way those people who don’t give a crap can leave them on, those that are bothered can turn them off.

Fingers crossed that they allow consumers to have a choice in this matter, otherwise it will just be another reason for me to choose a different machine for my entertainment needs later this year.

  134. buddynugget

I noticed it said “players” in the article from the writers perspective. I dont think what the MS advertising team is talking about is advertisements in gaming I believe its primarily when viewing TV, music and movie content. I like the idea of targeted advertisements. Although i believe some people will take this as XB1 advertising mops and products i think itll be more suited to gaming and entertainment only. Of course aside from the random promotional sales sponsered by a certain company. From what ive read we will be able to control the amount of data and specific types of data if any at all during the setup process of the XB1. I like this because im sure there are certain aspects i might want to opt out of. Microsoft has clearly described privacy security on many occasions. Im glad thats the one thing they got across clearly lol. Im very much looking forward to seeing the XB1 at my doorstep on launch day and the PS4 in the following months its going to be a great next generation of gaming consoles. Heres to the future mates!

    #134 2 years ago
  135. buddynugget

@polygem you dont think PS4 will have advertisements? they absolutely will. i think your taking this all wrong. targeted advertisements for games that you might like based on your gender age and purchase history. Same goes with movies and music. I really think this article is more about their TV and media side of the XB1. Time will tell though. No need to rage out in the comment section of something we still dont know enough about. Hopefully Gamescom will be MSs time to shine. Rumored they will be explaining policies showing new games and possibly announcing the official release date. Very excited. Sony is also doing the same. we got another 6 weeks til that pops off. Raging will be permitted when all the facts are known :D lol

What about the fucking camera that is looking at you, analyzing god only knows what, and spamming your family subliminally with ads based on the results of those analysis.

I have so many paranoid questions that I dont even know where to begin. Titan Fall be damned, you couldn’t give me this machine for free!

The way I see it, the X-box1 was created as a money making machine first and then just before announcing it, they made it possible to play games.

People, Xbox One is first and foremost a gaming console. Stop being PS fanboys!

    #140 2 years ago
  141. GK15

If it isn’t painfully obvious, this article is just bait written by a PS fanboy to get clicks and incite a flame war.

The article is written in such a way as to only make you say “fuck Xbox.” Seriously, when I buy this thing and all is see are FORCED ads that I don’t want to watch, I will be the first one in line to say fuck Xbox. I can assure you however, this will not be the case. There will be NO ads that distract you from navigating the menus or playing your games.

Shame on the Xbox idiot that gave this interview btw. How are gamers supposed to react? The ads will likely go largely unnoticed, much like they were on the 360.

And does it really take a sophisticated sensor to “count” the number of people in the room and throw a more family friendly OPTIONAL ad in the corner? This isn’t news, its flame bait. I wish I could give the article a thumbs down. Fanboys shouldn’t be allowed to write articles.

To balance out the opinions of the two Microsoft employees who just posted before me: fuck Xbox One.

Microsoft has a lot of valuable lessons to learn here.

-If Kinect 2.0 is even worth our time other than a tracking, data mining device, why is Ryse now controller only? How did that conversation happen? ‘Okay, Kinect just isn’t working for this game, so here’s Kinect 2. Shit. It still doesn’t work and we don’t want gamers to see that bang on launch day. Make it controller only.’

-If Microsoft did every single thing it needs to do to make the console competitive – welcome indies, open platform, drop price, no kinect, headset in box, more powerful GPU, faster memory, less OS overheads, free games every month – if it did all that, it would still only draw equal to PS4. And that brings the choice down to which company’s behaviour is more deserving of your money? Into whose hands do you wish to impart the future of your favourite pastime?

I, for one, no longer trust that Microsoft has my interests at heart, do you?

Like them, loathe them, whatever. Sony is going in the direction I want to see gaming go. Microsoft’s console is just an underpowered Trojan money vampire and I want neither a part of it, nor do I wish to vote for it with my wallet. I vote against.

Mattrick and his team has destroyed 11 years of steadily built trust and brand loyalty. Destroyed it. And that’s never coming back. Not for me.

    totally nailed it!

@135: the moment playstation will have other than purely gaming related ads i´m out.

@142: the ads on the 360 are forced on me already. i never wanted them. i hate them. there was chevrolet, bose, mc donalds etc! no way i will tolerate these on a service i paid for. this has nothing to do with gaming at all. i see gaming as a fun and awesome way of escapism. ads do not belong there. it´s just wrong. the moment the ads came to live i didn´t renew my gold. this month i will sell my 360 and i will never look back.

cannot believe some of you guys are swallowing all this…just cannot believe it.

  144. aprotosis

@144 So regardless of one’s take on this “console war”, I have checked the ads on both platforms before when this conversation comes up and more often than not, the PSN has more garbage ads than the 360. However, not to be apocryphal I went ahead and checked right now. Not counting ads that are alerting people to appropriate services, (Like the Castle Crashers ad on 360 or the Last of Us ad on the PSN) each system is currently sporting only one ad that is out of place. Which is pretty good by any measure. The 360 has a Metric/Mazda ad and the PSN is still trying to push a branded credit card. Both of these even are questionable since Metric would almost count as music-based which is a service they provide and the credit card is branded with the Playstation logo but both are actually not confined to the console’s ecosystems.

However both have had their share of cell phone ads, cars and soft drinks. Let’s not pretend either company has our best interest at heart with these. Yes, the ads don’t go away if you are a gold subscriber. They don’t go away if you are a PS+ subscriber either.

This is really nothing new. The article is flame bait, and the repost here is click bait for this site’s own advertisements. Let’s not pretend to be upset by any of these policies and just admit it is still pointless flag waving and chanting in an echo-chamber.

  148. DeyDoDoughDontDeyDough

I’m loving this new trend: “If your post is anti-Xbox One, your opinion is biased and therefore no longer valid.”

    Which is exactly like:

“Only the true messiah denies his divinity.”
“Okay, then I am the messiah.”
    “HE IS THE MESSIAH!”

Microsoft deserves the most damning criticism. It deserves not to sell a single console. Calling out people for complaining about Xbox One’s numerous inadequacies is to call for blind fanaticism and for the abolition of critical thought.

It is to say, ‘I am a sheep, and you should be too.’

Sorry. Few wolves about these parts.

Ain’t ads on PSN, why bother telling lies about this. Maybe ads on Xbox Live disturbing your mind?

    On topic.
As for those shitty moves by MS, XO looks even worse than a bucket full of shit. Kinect and adverts are like MS telling gamers, “deal with it, you don’t have a choise”. That make me feel like XO is “game over”, and only choise left showing MS no money at all. That’s sad.

Reason number 513 as to why I don’t want an xbox one. “Made for advertising”. Personally I don’t want advertising in a product I have to pay a premium price for. Sell me an xbox one for 50 bucks and you can advertise on it, I wont pay attention to them because I cant go 90 seconds of any day without being slapped with advertising someway in me, but you can put it in there.

Yeah the PS3 has advertising on it also but its very small amount. Usually just the scrolling text in the upper right hand corner of my XMB, shockingly enough it isn’t disruptive or distracting or annoying. I don’t mind it being there, hell sometimes I even pay attention to it.

If Microsoft wants me to pay 500 bucks for a xb1 I should have 0% advertising on the system.

Microsoft is as stupid as Hulu where hulu wants you to pay for their premium service and yet still puts commercials on it.

    @145

I have never seen an ad on the psn network that wasn’t related to playstation in some way or the other. I have never seen a cell phone, car or soft drink add, EVER. Please post your proof of this. A screen shot from a camera or phone will suffice. Please do not reply with insults or arguments as none of that is considered proof and will only make you look like a liar who is trying to justify a point. If you do show proof then your point is noted.

    #154 2 years ago
  155. DrDamn

    @145
Are you talking about websites rather than the console front ends? I’ve never seen a non-gaming advert on the XMB either. You only see games ads in What’s New? and even that can be avoided. I think the Live Dashboard ads become fairly easy to ignore after a while, but the UI design doesn’t help. Unless you have something pinned or it’s on disc it’s a pain to get to. Meaning you have to ignore a lot of crap to get there. I end up using the mini-guide as much as possible to avoid it.
