OZombie will need additional funding beyond Kickstarter

Spicy Horse’s latest crowd-funded effort will need another source of funding beyond its Kickstarter, which will only deliver “some initial chapters”.

StrategyInformer asked Spicy Horse boss American McGee if the $950,000 the Kickstarter is asking for is enough to fund such an ambitious-sounding title and was told that it isn’t.

“That amount is less than what we’ll need to develop the full game, but enough to get us started and deliver some initial chapters,” the developer said.

“We’ll need to throw some of our own funding at it, work to secure outside funding (perhaps via publishing deals) and find other creative ways to bridge the gap.”

Other sources of funding Spicy Horse could conceivably draw on include venture capitalists and sales of other titles.

As McGee pointed out, many studios draw on multiple sources of funding in order to complete projects – as Double Fine is doing with Broken Age, which it will release in two halves in order to deliver the indie’s full vision.

“This is the kind of thing we do constantly as an independent studio, so I’m confident we can use whatever funding we secure to make an excellent product and expand on whatever gets built first,” McGee said.

Thanks, PCGamesN.

It’s all crumbling! I wonder if this is because the devs are too eager to make complex next gen games instead of making an okay, smart game.. You gotta pace yourself, the currently large studios have had tens of years to build themselves up. A thrown together crew and some money ain’t gonna be the same..

I guess the new trend is starting on kickstarter “Hey we met our goals we set! Thank you guys…..but we need even more money to deliver our product”

First doublefine does this with time Schafer saying he needs more money. Which confused me to begin with, a company with the studio that has released retail sized games before and released several successful games still needs kickstarter? Then needs more money ontop of their met goals?

Now these guys are doing it.

Come on, they did the same thing with Akaneiro… Which turned out to be quite awful.

    Can’t trust them again really.
