Xbox One will release in Japan during second launch wave says Higuchi – report

Tuesday, 2nd July 2013 13:04 GMT By Dave Cook

Xbox One will release in Japan during Microsoft’s second wave of console launches, according to a translated interview with Microsoft Japan’s president and CEO Yasuyuki Higuchi.

Speaking with 4Gamer – translated via DualShockers – Higuchi said, “For the launch of Xbox One Japan is a Tier 2 country and not a Tier 1 country, so it’ll come with the second wave, that will be delayed a little bit [compared to North America].”

Higuchi was asked to clarify the above, and added, “That’s right. It’ll launch after the Tier 1 markets”.

Now, we all know the ills of taking translated quotes as gospel, so please do take this with a dose of salt for now. We’ve asked our local Microsoft rep to clarify the above, and we’ll update once we hear back.

This may imply the console has been pushed back to 2014 in Japan, but again, we’ll know for sure soon.

Given the Xbox brand’s struggle to win over the Japanese public, the new should come as little surprise, meanwhile other Asian territories are firmly in Microsoft’s crosshairs. Check out the Xbox One’s Asian launch plans here.

Thanks CVG.

If this translation is correct, I wonder if it is coming in the second launch wave in order to be changed slightly to cater to Japan’s market.

Don’t think they ever released a Japanese date in the first place, so “pushed back” isn’t quite correct. That’s a really bad choice of words by the MS Exec though. Second tier just sounds like second class or second rate.

well i guess playsation 4 will launch in japan on its “first launch wave”? so pretty much because of that you can probably predict who will score more sales. same goes from games, when games are released at much different times in other places, they become less appealing.

Realistically those points don’t matter much. The did try quite hard with the 360 at launch to appeal to the Japanese audience but they didn’t bite for a variety of reasons, some of which are out of MS control. It looks like they don’t think it’s worth so much effort this time.

@2 – Its a translation dude, chances are, the words in Japanese would have been different. Although I see what you mean.

Except no translation was needed for the word tier (follow the link) …

    日本はXboxの展開においてTier 2(≒優先順位第二陣)であり,Tier 1(≒最優先)にはなっていません。ですから2番めの“波”がきたときのローンチとなり,(北米市場からは)ちょっと遅れることになりますね。

Very bad choice of words from MS. ‘Clarifying’ statement in 3, 2, 1…
