Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 going free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers - update

Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 are going free as part of Microsoft's new scheme, which sees two retail games given to Xbox Live Gold subscribers each month. The games will still cost you at the time of writing, but they'll be going free at some point this month, so consider this your heads-up warning.

UPDATE:

Oh well, it seems that just last night, Major Nelson poured cold water on both games coming in July. So in short, it's now unclear when they're going free on Xbox Live Gold. We'll update again once we know more.

ORIGINAL STORY: The incentive was revealed at E3 last month, where Microsoft confirmed that both Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 will be offered to subscribers in July.

It is believed that the first game - it's unconfirmed which - will go free on the first of each month, while the other goes free on the 16th. You can also get Defense Grid: The Awakening for free on Gold right now.

We'll update this page once the game goes free, but for now, what do you make of the scheme? What games would you like to see given away? Let us know below.
