Forza 5 anti-aliasing still an issue unless developing at 4k

Friday, 28th June 2013 17:34 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Forza 5 has had a bit of spit polish over Forza 4 and according to Turn 10′s Dan Greenawalt, the next-gen title run swimmingly on your big TV, but don’t expect anti-aliasing issues to be non-existent unless you are running 4K.

Speaking with VG247′s Sam Clay at E3, Greenawalt said while some things have changed technically between the two iterations of the racer, some players may still experience a bit of an issue with anti-aliasing – but mainly when it comes to things such as louvers. And there’s a reason why this happens, according to Greenawalt.

“Yes, it’s changed with Foza 5 but the biggest [cause] is the cars, especially the ones with louvers on the back,” he said. “When you have a really bright sky it’s going to create a high contrast which makes lines look jagged. So, what we had with Froza 4, was a game that was running at 720p and now with Forza 5 we have 1080p and 60fps and there’s a lot of post processing going on as well.

“So, is that going to solve the jaggy line issue entirely? I think it will still be there in the louvers because it would look that way even with a digital camera. While we’ve taken big leaps and bounds with tech, the idea of completely eliminating the jagged lines technically, it would require a 4K resolution or something like that.”

Greenawalt also explained the game’s tech to Sam a bit, and you can hear more about it through the video posted earlier.

Forza 5 is an Xbox One launch title expected in November.

so what was it they actually showed at e3 then?… yes that was right, it was pcs…

Xbox One Games At E3 Were Running On Windows 7 With Nvidia GTX Cards

so they haven’t shown shit of what the real xbone will be able to deliver. the xbots are yet again being taken on for another ride on the lie train…

and here we are the flagship of the xbone the forza 5. will now have anti-aliasing issue if it can’t be run at 4k. one thing we know for sure is that a game like forza5 will never be able to run at 4k on the xbone.

so talk about grand delusion….. micro$hafts at their best, enuff said.

Forza and Ryse are confirmed running on Xbone. You should keep your yap under control, I wouldn’t want to draw everyone’s attention to the fact that Forza shits all over Driveclub from a grand old height if I were you. :)

Bullshit. To completely remove jagged lines and stuff requires 16 multisample Anti-Aliasing

that Xbone can’t do because of it’s hardware. Well, actually it can do but games quality will be not impressive.

@2 they haven even run forza on the real xbone yet and they talk about anti-aliasing issue… while driverclub have been running of the ps4 hw. it says it all who is the real shit and that is forza.

If it was running on GTX cards and high end PC’s, do you think they would be talking about limitations?

    Think for a second…

It’s confirmed 1080p and 60fps, which is more than can be said about drive club at the moment…

Yeah, it’s bullshit, but we know neither the PS4 or Xbone will be capable of the features you mentioned! :)

  7. ps3fanboy

sony haven’t promised any 4k. but we know driver club was run on the actually ps4 hw, and the ps4 is more powerful… so i would really like to see the forza5 run on the real hw and do a comparison. you can bet your ass on that forza will not be anything like the fantastic demo they showed, that is for sure…

You haven’t done anything wrong? Kid you deserve to get permabanned for your ridiculous nonsense. Driveclub was on PS4 yeah, it also struggled bigtime mantaining a 30 frames per second and it looked quite bad too according to Digital Foundry. Oh that’s right, both Killer Instinct and Forza 5 were running on Xbox One hardware and both were 60fps @1080p. Yes go cry now. Don’t spread misinformation boy. It has been confirmed multiple times that those games were running ON X1 hardware.

It’s beyond me why they don’t ban you.

I love PS3, but once I put Forza in the disk tray, it was clearly the best racer ever created. Sorry, no system war is going to change that it is a better series outright. Go ahead, play it and say different.

But the fanboy is right with Micrsofot trying to mislead us and running all there game demos on PCs (thats quite the joke…telling us how good and powerful it is blabla and then using PCs..

Sony actually showed everything on the PS4 even so some games were clearly not ready yet (like the Aassassins Creed framedrops/stuttering).

I have not actually seen XboxOne footage yet and that does concern me.

Want to see everything before I decide which console to buy next year.

Overall Micrsoft is doing so much wrong with this XboxOne reveal…such a mess.

But I will wait and see whats up next year :)

Currently my money goes to Sony.

@15 thanks finally someone with sense here. micro$haft didn’t show anything on their xbone. so until they do they can just keep shut, they are for sure not helping their cause with more lies and fud. i hoped that micro$haft would play fair after the draconian drm fiasco, but its turning into a new rrod fiasco. its all lies lies lies… and throw more money at it and deny everything. people should wake up and take a step back, because this ain’t helping any gamer.

by the way good you did go for the ps4, you will not regret that :)

@12 Depends on what you’re looking for. If you want a nice game with semi-realistic physics, horrible over-contrasted picture and insane amount of buffering in the steering and nice car customization and painting then Forza 4 is pretty good.

If you want a game with much more realistic driving physics, controls, picture and track selection then GT5 (and soon GT6) is the game to get.

For me the most important thing in these type of games is what happen on the track. On the track GT is king.

holy shit, the comments here are infested more and more with those stupid fanboys.

its getting really painful to read the comments on this site, but also you cant stay away somehow.
its like a train wreck :)

whenever i have a shitty day at work i look at what ps3fanboy wrote and think to myself: “there is some idiot who takes the time to bash a piece of plastic every minute of his life” and i instantly feel better. so thank you for that

1080P and 60fps means jack, the QUALITY pre-sets are what matter. Anti-aliasing is just a blanket term, the exact form in involved is what counts. All PC gamers know this. AA or AAA just isn’t the same as MSAA x4.etc etc.

Cmon guys, why all the trash talking about Driveclub? We haven’t really seen that much of it, its months away, and it seems to not be in the same category of racers that Forza is in, more like need for speed, or Test drive, or Burnout:Paradise. Im not really a big racing guy, and I never could get into the Forza or PGR series, I have always preferred Rallysport games like rallysport Challenge or the Dirt games, but Driveclub could be fun.

Forza is a established franchise from a developer who has made previous games in the series, Driveclub is a new IP.

Forza would be better compared to a Gran Turismo game, which is years away.

However MS did show games running on high end PC’s, but developers have stated certain games ran on dev kits. Until we see them reviewed and in our hands, all this trash talk is just baloney, we have really no idea how its going.

    Ps3fanboy you make my day.
Right game fans here it is,when the games come out then we can judge and then we will know who is bullshitting who, plain and simple!!
MS were running most of their games on high endPC’s but only time will tell if they will look as good.
    Long live the gamer!

I don’t believe proper antialiasing can’t be done at 1080p, even louvers. He’s copping out, probably because of current tech limitations. The system is new, and it will take a while to get the best out of it (like any other console gen).

Wow, vg247 has become saturated with the uninformed. People, please read the DF article on eurogamer about what was and wasn’t running on XO hardware before spreading more misinformation. Forza 5, and several other titles, were in fact running on the XO.

    @27 Good one :)

Don’t trust what Microsoft are saying. Major Nelson lie to Angry Joe about DRM being impossible to remove and then Microsoft announcing that they are removing their DRM one week later is a good example. They are in PR mode and they will say anything to look good. Distorted truth is not truth, it’s lie. Please don’t fall for it Xbone fan.

@3: Surely, you meant supersampling? ;)

At least I found all other AA methods I have tried unsatisfactory. And while it seems ATI drivers can’t do 16xSSAA, I at least still saw quite a difference between 8xSSAA and 8xSSAA+EQAA. Or 8xEQSSAA or however one may abbreviate that.
(Unfortunately, even Mirror’s Edge runs at only 30-40fps with the latter settings…on an 7970GE)

I know what you mean… But then, what’s the point?

Do we need a game like drive club? Especially if it looks shit next to NFS, Forza and GT… What is its purpose? It may as well be an IOS app…

I have no idea why they didn’t create an absolutely kick ass Motorstorm using a combination of jungle / destruction tech they had from the previous games… That would have been a perfect graphics showcase.

I feel there studio was ‘sideswiped’ with this game, and they don’t have any conviction in it. It was basically sent out to compete with Forza and will obviously fail…

Taking one for the team, springs to mind…
