Nintendo puts out the “right number of Mario games based on what fans are asking for”

Thursday, 27th June 2013 22:04 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Nintendo has said it puts out the “right number of Mario games based on what fans are asking for,” according to NoA senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta.

Speaking with Shack, Scibetta said the games are also based on what the developer’s “creative visions are,” and as long as there is some innovation, it’s the “right call.”

“The key to that is as long as there’s innovation is occurring within the gameplay, as long as there’s new features, then marrying the characters and the IPs that people love is the right call from our standpoint,” he said. “You could call all the games that we’re making here new IP in the sense that they’re new gameplay experiences. They just happen to also have the IP that people associate with.”

“If you look at something like Super Mario 3D World, the gameplay on that one that I find really cool is those transparent warp points. Usually you used to go into one and pop out the other, and that was the end of the gameplay experience. Now, there’s a whole dynamic there where you can navigate in there, try to avoid enemies, try to get a better advantage. You could theoretically make a whole new game with those kind of gameplay dynamics.

“If we didn’t put Mario on it, then it would just seem like a new IP. Because there’s those new gameplay dynamics like that, we think there’s the innovation there that will keep people interested and keep the Mario brand fresh.”

Super Mario 3DS Land arrives in December on Wii U.

They may put out the right number but my god with a lackluster looking 3D Mario with cat suits isn’t helping the Wii U at this point.

    I expected so much more…

    @2 – Don’t forget Dr Mario….lol

Seriously, while I love mario games, why don’t Nintendo actually try and create more games based on other characters or better yet new ones.

At this point they could just ape other games and place their own characters in it.

Call Of Mario, BattleMario, The Mario Scrolls, Mariocraft, the ideas are endless.

Let’s hope Nintendo can be a third party developer instead next generation, because as it seems like right now, their lineup of games look like a disaster. They don’t have the games at all. On a yearly basis, companies like Ubisoft, EA and Activision makes more games than Nintendo.

Wii U is just a piece of toy, if I would’ve called it a console I would’ve called it a last generation console, because it caters vastly different from the average developer teams and it will definitely fail, no third party support, basically only Mario and Zelda games, outdated graphics, and outdated first party franchises.

Why do they even make mario bros. and donkey kong country to Wii U and even charge full price for it? Even though it’s an outdated 2D platformer that was orignally intended to be a handheld game? Why can’t they leave it behind or make it to 3DS instead? Isn’t that a sign, that they don’t have anything to else to make than all the other old crap?

If you’re if an adult gamer who likes to play games that have HD graphics, sandbox gamplay, decent controls and games like NBA, NCAA Football, Fight Night, Madden, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Medal of Honor, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead. Then what do you have to look forward to on Nintendo’s console? The libirary on these kinds of games is very small.

So Nintendo is clearly not delivering to every gamer as they want to. They’ve always said that’s what they’re all about and they once again fail to fulfill this with the Wii U, instead they’re milking old franchises that are 33 years old, that’s why I think it’s a last generation console.

Mario is just nintendos whore. Any time they need people to notice them or the cocaine bucket starts running dry they shit out a new Mario game.

Like jesus Christ….new super Mario bros, new super Mario bros wii, new super Mario bros 2, new super Mario bros wiiu, new super luigi bros. How many damn times can they call it new?

I love Nintendo and all but they haven’t had an original idea in decades. While everyone complains there have been like 9 call of duty games Nintendo is pinching off like the 49th Mario game, the 23rd pokemon game and the 35th Zelda game while the fans go ape poopy over yet another franchise sequel, a franchise spinoff or a franchise re-release or a franchise remake.

That’s all Nintendo is, its a mindless, brainless franchise sequel machine and people love them for it. They are a horrible horrible game developer because they just rebadge the same old things and Nintendo fans get whipped into a fury of pure excitement at a new Mario game because its new feature is…..Mario in a cat suit…../sigh
