DirectX 11.2 will be exclusive to Windows 8.1 and Xbox One

Microsoft has announced DirectX 11.2, which will be exclusive to Windows 8.1 and Xbox One. According to the video below, courtesy of Evil Avatar, one of the new features touted is called “tiled resources”. This will allow video cards to use system ram to improve texture detail. It’s all very technical, but in other words, it will make things pretty, or something like that. Watch the demonstration below.

    The most likely outcome of this is that developers just won’t bother making use of DX 11.2 at all.

    I have no personal problems with Windows 8 myself, but consumers have made it pretty clear at this point that they simply don’t want it.

    @10 I bought an SSD to specifically install Windows on it just for booting. Yes, it is super fast. However, I soon found I didn’t buy one large enough thanks to the updates W7 piles on, which don’t “replace” the old file (like Windows ever did that anyway) and it filled the damn thing up fast. I should have bought a bigger one, but they were expensive two years ago.

    I just wiped my PC before E3 and re-installed W7 on my 2TB drive and I am still not used to the slow start up process.

    @21 Actually Windows keeps keeps back-ups of the updates so you can undo them when needed. You can remove them with the disk cleanup utility by pressing the cleanup system files (or something to that degree) button in the disk clean up window.

    It should start scanning again and the check box for “remove windows update backup files” should appear than.

    Same story for restore points. You can delete these on he more options tab. These things can take gigabytes if you dont throw them out once in a while.

    @14 Ajsman, yes the lockdown have started. games should not be so integrated as they will be with directx11.2. opengl don’t lock down any games api. this is great in many aspect, and one of them is that it make it much more cheaper for the developer doing their games. with opengl they can put more quality time delivering a quality product, than filling microsofts pockets.

    Windows 8 is pretty okay, in honesty. It’s light, they don’t have it loaded down with as much crap, and it’s efficient. Where they went wrong was with the Metro nonsense (which I despised) and forcing it upon people. With 8.1 it’s said that they’re bringing back the start menu, so I might actually upgrade once I’ve seen a video of that in action.

    I am envious of 8′s light footprint, to be honest. In some ways it is to 7 what 7 was to Vista. 7 is a beautiful OS, but there’s just too much stuff loaded into it by default. XP had the same problem, too. It seems with Windows 8 Microsoft is finally embracing modularity. About time, as Linux distros have been doing that forever now.

    I can agree that SSD will make your life faster! :P But I would suggest to go with a small one just for the OS and essential apps (64GB would be more than enough) and use a HDD for Steam and multimedia/personal files/photos-music etc.

    I wouldn’t suggest OCZ drives, I got burned with an OCZ Vertex 2, it died on me just around a year after I bought it, thankfully it was still in warranty.

    I use a 120GB SSD for Windows 7 and everyday programs and a 1TB HDD for Steam, games and personal files.

    I found this guide really useful and managed to make my OS less than 20GB. Another nice trick to save some SSD space is to migrate your “Users” folder to the HDD.

    @28 yeah im a WIN7 user and having spent some time on my friends WIN8 it is actually a very efficient OS, but with metro it just felt that they only when 50% of the way with it hence having to switch screens which was just plain shit and poor design. Hopefully with the .1 update it will get to where it should be and blessed be the start button.

    As for this tiled resources it sounds great but id rather see what some of the big devs can get out of it.

    @39 It’s not the OS that matters, it’s the game that matters. While Valve has ported some of their games to OGL that doesn’t count the other thousands of games that are on Steam that remain DirectX and Windows exclusive. Right now Mac has less than 10% of the games that Windows/DX supports and Linux has an even smaller 2%.

    Now with both consoles running AMD and AMDs history of shit support of OpenGL I would expect even less support moving forward.

    Are you seriously complaining about the fact that if Microsoft wanted to that they could purchase exclusivity rights to something even though it’s 100% confirmed that they haven’t?

Anyway, this whole tiled texture thing is just Microsoft exposing partially resident textures (see http://www.amd.com/uk/products/technologies/gcn/Pages/gcn-architecture.aspx).. it’s not a hardware feature specific to DX 11.2 or anything.     @49 All of the versions I listed were specific to the platform. For example, DX10 was never released on anything lower than Vista. If you mean forward support, then yes, you’ll be able to get DX 11.2 on Win 9 and beyond.

    Also I remember Direct X 11.1 being Windows 8 exclusive, as well as Internet Explorer 10. Yet here I am using a Windows 7 PC with IE10 and DX11.1

    You never know how their support will change in the future, except if it comes to Microsoft then they’re always going to be changing to fuck you based on these comments.

    IE10, IE1000 are not absolutely necessary to browse the internet, I still can use IE9 or use another browser entirely

    while with DX11.1 and 11.2, when a game is exclusive to that platform, I must buy the new W8

    and keep in mind W7 Sp1 isn’t even officially off shelf, not to discuss it’s end of support circle, 2015 (2020 extended) – while MS decides to just kill it after 2 years (just one year if you consider W8 DX11.1)

    I’m pretty sure that this is going to be a non-issue. We really haven’t moved away from DX9, and I doubt many companies will be moving to DX11 in the next few years since several devs are still supporting the 360 and PS3.

    DX10 can’t run on XP because DX10 runs in concert with the new Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) architecture introduced with Vista that is completely different from the old display driver model of XP. Like dkpunk said, “If you use some hack or emulator it may report it as 10, but in actuality it’s running 9c.”

    I am totally against not at least releasing this for Windows 7, sure not Vista and XP as they are rubbish and old (in that order lol).

    I do however find the function of allowing a video card to take advantage of system RAM to improve texture performance. This will greatly benefit AMD’s APU’s as the GPU’s inside them rely on system RAM and its memory source. And APU likes fast RAM and gives a nice performance boost when using up to 1866MHz speeds, this new function in DX11.2 would seem to help out even further.

    Except Halo 1, & 2 and the AoE series they have released nothing really not worthy. Orc’s Must Die was fun but could of been better. Releasing Halo 5 for PC would take away from sales of the console version, a lot more than you think.

    @66 Doh, I know WDDM is a driver thing, the 2nd “D” IS for “Driver”. And you got it all wrong, WDDM doesn’t works on top of DX and DXGI but at the bottom. There’s D3D -> DXGI -> WDDM -> Kernel -> Hardware. WDDM is the layer that represent the gfx drivers from nVidia/AMD.

    And I’ll say it again, WDDM IS the reason there’s no supports for DX10 in XP, because DX10 is built to talk with WDDM and XP doesn’t support WDDM.

    It’s exactly the same reason why you need Win 8 for DX 11.2, because you need WDDM 1.3, which is available only in Win 8.1.

    I use Windows 8 on one of my work computers and I enjoy it. Al beit its an all in one computer which makes it funner its overall got its ups and downs. For one it doesn’t seem to register gp’s of server 2008 r2 very well. It kind of negates them giving me access to things i shouldnt have access to. And, it also drops network drives a little to often for my liking. I get tired of mapping the drives all the time.

    I am really looking forward to 8.1 though. As for a gaming platform that will take time to warm up to. Wish them the best though because i wouldnt mind 8 succeeding at all. May push for touch interfaces being a standard for all devices in the future.

    May not be many PC users that will use DX11.2 but it doesn’t matter, if you want to play games and want to use all the features and enhancements of DX11.2 you will need to get your PC ready for it.

    Xbox1 will be using it and many of your PC games will be ported from that hardware, which is also AMD/Radeon based, the closer your PC is to that hardware the better, so forget Intel.

    Oh you will also most likely need a GPU that’s DX11.2, and OS that’s 11.2, Drivers that are DX11.2 and of course the game that supports it…

    That’s always been the case in the past.
