Naughty Dog “ripped off” Ellen Page’s likeness, actor says

Monday, 24th June 2013 01:46 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Ellen Page isn’t impressed by the character of Ellie in The Last of Us, who is said to look a heck of a lot like the Canadian actor.

Asked about the similarities in a Reddit AMA, Page seemed a little put out.

“I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called Beyond Two Souls, so it was not appreciated,” she said.

On Twitter, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann said Ellie was “perfectly played” by voice actor Ashley Johnson.

“No one could’ve done a better job,” he said.

As many commentators have noted, the version of Ellie shown when The Last of Us was revealed bore marked similarities to Page, which were later significantly toned down. Page’s appearance in Beyond: Two Souls was revealed at around the same time as the character overhaul became common knowledge, but Naughty Dog maintained it was a coincidence, and that the change was motivated by story concerns.

Post reworking, some players have said they still see the resemblance while others haven’t noticed it at all.

The Last of Us is available now, and Beyond: Two Souls is expected in October, both exclusively for PlayStation 3.

Thanks, Johnny.

Its quite obvious she never played the game and Ellie doesn’t seem like a “rip off”. Maybe a kid sister but Ellie doesn’t look like her as much as she did at the first reveal and then her character is nothing like her.

I’m starting to think this is the main reason Naughty Dog changed the design. So they would not hear bullshit like this.

The first time they showed her, yes, she did look a lot like Ellen Page, but I don’t think the resemblance is there anymore, after the change in ages.

@8 – That’s a picture of Ellie from the first trailer, though, when she definitely looked like Ellen Page. In the final game, she looks a lot less like her.

i really think, it’s quite a coincidence, because ellen page has a relativly generic face. if you look hard enough, you might find an actor for every video game character who is resembled by it. naughty dog just finds some cool ways to get across the uncanny valley.

….. Eh, I finally realised that Ellen Page should be in Beyond Two souls. Cause I thought she was playing in The Last Of Us. I am not kidding here.. I really thought that. I just realised.

Meaning, she makes a more then valid point….

I think she’s just angry that it seems that her image was stolen. Too bad you can’t sue for something like that (more like thank goodness). Beyond Two Souls does not look anywhere as good as The Last of Us.

As someone who played thru the entire game, I didn’t think once “Oh hey, that looks so much like Ellen Page.” Ellie was her own unique character and beyond some similarities with Page’s character in Juno, they are both two different characters.

Final design doesn’t look like her anymore. ND should give her a copy of the game. It’s good. lol

I’ve mixed up the two games in the past and forgotten which one Page actually voiced/acted in for this very reason. I can totally see her point.

Naughty Dog made a quick readjustments on Ellie’s face a few weeks after TLOU’s first trailer hit VGA 2010. Source: http://n4g.com/news/clickout/903355

It’s obvious and ND doesn’t want to encounter problems in the future. Good decision from the studio.

@1: … Because you have to play the game to be able to tell if a character looks like you? You can’t do that by looking at pictures and videos?

Whatever! The Last of Us and Beyond Two Souls are two completely different works. One is a game and a masterpiece, and the other is Beyond Two Souls.

What makes this funny is the fact that the version of Ellie that she is complaining about isn’t even the version based in here… that was the original Ellie.

You’d think she’d be flattered that someone considered her likeness relevant and good enough to use it as inspiration for their character.

  23. salarta

I think people in these comments don’t really understand that as an actress, her image, as in her likeness, is part of her career. It’s a bigger issue than usual because she’s actually using her likeness in a different video game. Because she’s doing that, people could think that any character that looks like her is played by or at least endorsed by her, making it look like she signed onto a project she did not. MAYBE there’d be less reason to worry if the average person thought she’d never lend her likeness to a video game, but that’s changed with her commitment to Beyond: Two Souls.

It sounds inconsequential when we’re talking about The Last Of Us, but what if it was a game that included the character getting naked or having sex? Would it seem as innocent if it looked like she endorsed her likeness going through a pornographic scenario when she would never sign up for such a role?

    @23

SHe is not going after money and even if she did she would be biting the hand that feeds as SOny is one of the biggest entertainment giants that has funded majority of the movies she has been in(directly and indirectly) not to mention she is already in a game by Sony.

To add that the character is in shape of form, her exact likeness so she would have no ground to sue.

    #24 1 year ago
  25. Ireland Michael

@23 They didn’t use her likeness in the final game, so she’s reacting to essentially nothing.

If it was a game that portrayed her in the way she claimed, she would have every reason to be upset. But as it stands, it isn’t and it doesn’t, and yet she’s still acting pissed off at it… even though her likeness isn’t used.

See and her opinion may have had some merit if Ellie had not been redesigned. But the fact is Ellie now looks nothing like her so she has nothing to be annoyed about.

And this Ellie/Ellen thing has always ticked me off as it somewhat overshadows Ashley Johnson’s superb performance.

*Though she’s also directed people to Ashley’s twitter which I think is pretty cool :)

She’s a bit slow off the mark isn’t she?

The ‘face-swap’ happened almost a year ago where there was all the hubbub about it in the first place.

I guess she’s only kicking off about it now because The Last of Us is selling buckets and thus its visibility has been increased.

    But still.

  29. salarta

@24: What I’m mainly trying to point out is that regardless of whether or not any of us personally think that her likeness was not used, or even if it could be objectively proven that it was not, Ellen Page believes it was used. And it’s completely understandable for her to be worried about that.

A lot of commenters seem to be acting like Ellen Page caring about her image and what’s done with it without her permission somehow means she’s being selfish or overreacting. Even if she was overreacting, if your likeness was a critical part of your identity AND your career, you might overreact too.

As you said, she isn’t suing anyone. She’s merely expressing her worry and annoyance at what she sees to be a violation of her public and professional identity.

Intentional or not, I kept mistaking The Last of Us as the other game that Ellen Page was involved in every time I saw a promotional screenshot or trailer.

I should get angry on Konami for using my name and image for Castlevania LoS then…

It happens that some fictional character might resemble someone in real life, I bet there’s a girl in real life that looks exactly like Ellie but is not making a fuss because she’s just a common person.

This Ellen Paige complaining only show how thick and presumptuous are the celebrities.

In this very comment section there are people writing they thought The Last of Us would be “the Ellen Page game”, not Beyond. Yet, people are saying there is no resemblance? Wow.

Listen: Shortly after “The Last of Us”, “Beyond” is coming out. A game Ellen actually stars in. So if another game comes out that close after release with another girl looking almost exactly like her (before the redesign she in fact DID look exactly like her), she has more than enough ground to be pissed off.

If hardcore gamers commenting on VG247 are confused, just imagine how the general public feels about this. They hear about an Ellen Page game, see the cover of THe Last of Us and whoops, there we go. THat has to be the one, right?

    My point is this: Q

Quantic Dream wanted the likeness of Ellen Page – so they went to Ellen Page, asked her, paid her and gave her work.

Naughty Dog wanted the likeness of Ellen Page – so they just copied her face.

    See the difference?

“(before the redesign she in fact DID look exactly like her)”

“If hardcore gamers commenting on VG247 are confused, just imagine how the general public feels about this. They hear about an Ellen Page game, see the cover of The Last of Us and whoops, there we go. THat has to be the one, right?”

Problem: You imply she no longer looks like her as of the redesign, then go on to say she does currently, on the box art of the game. Just sayin’ ‘the general public’ probably wouldnt have seen her before the redesign, they most likely dont even know it happened.

You really think people think this is Ellen Page?:

The point is, they’re *not* using her likeness, and haven’t since the original reveal, which even they admitted was a bit of a blunder on their part.

Paige is clearly working off that reddit user’s word alone, and she makes it fairly apparent she wasn’t even aware of the issue until now.

Guys, it’s blatantly obvious that the chracter design for Ellie was inspired to a huge measure of Ellen Page. And while she has now a more younger/rounder face. It’s absolutely obvious who stood model. Haircut, nose, eyebrows, eyes, habit, bodylanguage, proportions – everything.

Show me a different actress than Ellen Page who can have inspired the character design for Ellie.

Ellie will look like many girls at that age. This is more like media making news rather than actually news. And ND changed Ellie back when the first comparing made them aware of the “problem” made by media.

    #37 1 year ago
  38. xxJPRACERxx

I don’t know what changes ND made, but she still look like Page. Each time I see Ellie I think of Page. They should have model Ellie from Ashley Johnson, the actress who’s playing her.

@11: She has a point because you were confused?

As Clupula pointed out multiple times: The final version of Ellie (the one in the game) looks nothing like Page. I guess she never bothered to watch past the first trailer.

@38: I remember reading that they took some of her facial features into consideration when they re-designed her.

This image really shows the difference between the two. The first definitely looked like her, the second, not much at all.

@31: Are you a famous actor, for whom your image is a critical component of your career and one mistaken impression caused by people appropriating your likeness for their projects could ruin your life? No? Then what Konami did isn’t an issue.

People, stop pretending Ellen Page is just a random ordinarily unknown person in the world out of billions of random ordinarily unknown people. She’s not.

Though, at least I can say that some of the comments give me vindication for my impressions of the people making them.

@40: Image? What image? Seriously most people only know Ellen Page from Juno, not because they saw it, but because it won an oscar.

Most people saw her in Inception and guess what? Ellie is so not like the character in Inception.

Ellen Page is an actress and for all we know, she could be a mouth breathing idiot. It might be a big shocker to most of you, but the character she played in Juno … is not actually her character! TAM TAM TAM!

So more credit should actually go to the writer, Diablo Cody for creating that character.
