Titanfall offers a “new skill to master”

Thursday, 20th June 2013 02:19 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Respawn Entertainment’s new game is, of course, a shooter – but a shooter with a twist, and on the TItanfall team hopes will challenge even expert players.

Speaking to Joystiq, lead designer Fairfax “Mackey” McCandlish said when Respawn first formed -before it even had computers – the team sat around with a white board and brainstormed the kind of game it would like to make.

It was a shooter, of course, but a shooter with some new abilities, specifically wall-running and double-jumps.

“We started to imagine what it would be like to play an existing map if you had these crazy capabilities,” he said.

“It’s all about finding something new and interesting, like a new skill to master. We’re all really good at aiming and shooting now; it’s nice to get a reward for manoeuvrability and outthinking the opponent, thinking one step ahead.

“It’s really bringing a lot of that shooter experience and inventiveness and taking every game we’ve ever loved and making it into one.”

Titanfall is coming to PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in early 2014.

Brink too had a much advertised twist: SMART – ‘Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain’

    Remember how that turned out?

Yeah, but it isn’t the same. It’s just double jump and running on walls in this game.

Brink wasn’t made by the guys who developed MoH:AA, CoD2 and CoD4

I seriously doubt these traversal mechanics will be as essential as the ones in UT, Quake and Tribes.

^ I doubt it too. They are probably some kind of linear options to travel in the map.

but at the same time i’m glad they are doing it. OF course it’s on consoles and it’s going to be slow but we will see how it works for them. I hope for less bullet magnetism and AUTO-AIM bullshit in this game. But dreams…

This might be new to CoD, but certainly not shooters. Almost every sci-fi shooter has at least one of these game mechanics.
