“Winning is determined by a much longer time-scale”: Gara on Sony’s bid in the next-gen war

Monday, 17th June 2013 15:13 GMT By Dave Cook

PS4 had a good showing at E3 last week, but SCE UK chief Fergal Gara has stressed that while he feels Sony won the day,he has stressed that the winner of next-gen will be determined on a much longer time-scale.

Speaking with MCV, Gara said, “Winning is determined by a much longer timescale. We were very pleased with how our messages went down at E3. We aim to be the best for gamers, and this was a key step in that direction.

“E3 is important for early momentum and generating pre-orders. But it is only one step along. We feel we had a good day but there is loads more hard work to do, and we are focused on that.”

Gara added that the UK and Ireland is Sony’s hardest-fought territory in Europe, and that the company will need to keep the pressure on to win the day. He said, “My UK and Ireland team is under the most competitive pressure in Europe. So if we want to be more successful, we have to earn it. We are have to be more driven and focused.”

Do you think Sony has what it takes to keep its E3 momentum going? Let us know below.

With so little information it’s impossible to tell right now. I think both consoles will be a success.

@3: Not at a minim, at a push. They’ll be phased out in year 8 and have a two year post-gen tail.

Sony didn’t “win” E3. Rest assured, used game blocking and online requirements will be standard in the coming years. If you get over the growing pains and the fan-boy fist bumping, Xbox had a flat out better showing. The $100 difference is only an issue because of the “it’s cool to rage at MS” fad.

At any other E3, the tone would be different. With more exclusives, better features, and awesome peripheral support, Xbox would’ve wiped the floor even at $100 more. People’s vision is clouded by the rage and the mob mentality.

The discussion would be better graphics on the PS4 vs everything the Xbox offers and more exclusives.

And Sony is even taking advantage of uneducated gamers on the graphics tech side. If the top PC graphics cards in the world, which are well over twice the power of the PS4, can’t leverage more than 3GB of memory, what makes you think the much weaker PS4 is going to make use of the 7gb of 8 for games? Short answer, it’s not. It’s not powerful enough to utilize that much information.

People thinking Sony is a gaming saint will soon realize that they are in fact being played.

As you have been going on about MS this entire time. You seem to think we should listen to you? ANd you of all people don’t know a damn thing about either system. THe fact that MS was using HP PCs that used WIndows 7, highest end Nvidia card and not a PC with similar specs of the Xbone shows that not even MS are confident with their hardware. Also Sony has showed gameplay with the PS4 and they look pretty damn good compared to most top end PCs. If people wanted a PC they would get one. People get consoles because of accessibility no need for troubleshooting or registry editing to fix games like I have done many times on my PC.

lookingglass is right though. If you ignore the near-universal disdain that people have against the Xbone, it’s actually doing really well!

    Fucking audience. Who needs one.

We’ll see who’s crying when the 5 Xbone adopters (all Microsoft employees) are sitting in their tall dark tower with their uninterruptable 50gb fibre connection playing their consoles alone, while everybody else is out playing on different platforms more suited to their needs.

I bet it’s gonna be the guys playing on different platforms more suited to their needs.

    Sing it lookingglass!
