Saints Row 3 mod tools are a test for Saints Row 4

Volition are set to release “what is essentially a full sdk” for Saints Row: The Third over the coming months, one of the chief Saints Row modders has revealed.

He claims the release will be a “test run” for releasing an SDK for Saints Row 4. The studio is also looking into old Saints Row 2 documentation to see what they can release for the PC’s first outing with the saints.

Jeff Thompson, the studio’s Director of Programming and Senior Programmer Mike Wilson will be working together with some of the game’s most enthusiastic modders to release “documentation, file formats, tools, and more” for Saints Row: The Third .

In the blog post, modder idolninja likens the package to “essentially a full sdk”.

“In simple terms, the modding community will finally be able to create and offer new clothing, new vehicles, new guns, new npcs, new missions, and even new world geometry which will greatly extend the life of the series and enhance the Saints Row games in ways we never even dared to dream of.”

idolninja goes on to claim that while Volition’s new owners Deep Silver have a reputation for being “fan-centric”, the “previous regime’s policies that forbade Volition developers from interacting with the fans at all”.

Saints Row 4 launches in August on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Thanks, PC Gamer.

if they are so “fan-centric” do this means we will not have any game save protection on saint row4 on the ps3?… fuck i hated that i couldn’t back up my saves for saint rows3 on the ps3. that was the only let down….

This is absolutely awesome. I really didn’t see this coming, but Saints Row III and IV with modding could be the best thing ever. Holy crap, just think of the possibilities!

You seem to have changed your tune. I distinctly remember you banging on about how modding on the PC was dead, despite it being stronger on the PC now than it’s ever been, with many developers after a slice of the Steam Workshop pie.

Regardless, despite how I feel about your past shenanigans, I hope they do allow you to backup your saves in IV. I can’t really imagine how crazy not being able to backup my saves would drive me. I suspect that I’d be very upset. Is that common on the PS3 currently for developers to do that, though, or no? Sometimes a developer will learn the error of their ways in regards to stuff like this, though.

Perhaps spend less time trolling PC fans, and more time telling developers what you want for your chosen platform?

@1 You can put it into PS+ cloud. That’s what I always did.
