Microsoft – “No point winning a show, Xbox One will win in the long run”

Monday, 17 June 2013 19:06 GMT By Debabrata Nath

Yusuf Mehdi, CVP, Marketing & Strategy, Xbox One, has said during an interview with a leading Spanish daily that Sony might have put up a good show at E3, but it’ll be Microsoft with its Xbox One who’ll win in the long run.

A NeoGaf user has translated most of the important parts of the interview where Mehdi shares his views about some of the questions concerning the console.

When quizzed about how he feels about Sony putting up an amazing show at E3, announcing that the PS4 is going to be $100 cheaper than the Xbox One, Mehdi said Sony might have impressed the audience at E3, but the battle is far from over.

“We unveiled 20 titles for Xbox One, of which 17 are exclusive to this console. I do not think Sony can say the same. What I hear is that before launching we are better positioned, with a complete value proposition. With the installed Skype voice service and Kinect motion sensor included. No point in winning a show, because the test will be the consumer. In the long run our console will win.

When asked if Xbox One’s requirement to connect every 24 hours to the internet in order to play games was excessive, Mehdi was quick to brush it off.

“No. It is a mere connection to check who the user is and what is in your account. It doesn´t require a powerful connection. Just use a mobile for the check” he said.

Mehdi also responded to a question inquiring whether this might be the last console cycle with physical disc-based support.

“I understand that there are moments when you want to have the physical product, as with children at Christmas, you do not have patience to download. Each country is different, with their customs, and other connections, so we decided to leave.”

Microsoft seems very confident in its policies for the Xbox One judging by these responses. However, it remains to be seen if the fan outrage is just a passing phase or the Xbox One might really suffer thanks to such a shaky start.

try counting those 17 “exclusives” again Yusuf. Everything besides Halo and Forza will find it’s way too either pc or ps4 within 2015.. Throwing some cash at a 3d party dev for 1 year exclusivity.. Yeah, we’re real impressed..

But, yeah, so far I haven’t seen MS actually write up a list so we can see exactly which games they’re talking about. (Do they have one?)

*facepalm* This might be the dumbest thing they’ve said so far. Not everyone thought you ‘lost’ MS, but now you’re implying you did by diminishing the value of ‘winning’? Wtf? Ah, whatever, Death of the Author…

I’m gonna say it, but MS had better games at the show..yes they did…Sony pulled the PR coup and won the publics vote.

Both systems are basically equal in terms of hardware.

DRM blows and that is the only thing MS needs to fix. They need get off their asses and at least address the issue..clearly and precisely on how its going to work. No more tippy toeing around it!!

DRM, not supported in a 1/3 of EU at launch, region lock, mandatory internet, no self publishing and huge patching fees as well, the controllers still run on fucking batteries, XboxLive is an advert hell, mandatory kinect, 499$, it’s ugly, can block used games and I’m pretty sure I even still didn’t touch on all the bullshit Microsoft’s come up with.
It doesn’t take a fanboy to see that Microsoft is clearly evil..

There can be only one winner in the long run ~ Valve Corporation

Sony will take the early advantage with their conventional console approach ~ then maybe later on in the generation Microsoft, with their push for cloud gaming and digital distribution, will be in a slightly better positioned to compete with Valve ~ but in the end Valve will win.

    #23 2 years ago
  24. Lengendaryboss

If thats what MS mean by exclusives, then foreshame on them: Third party exclusives can go at any time but then again Deep Down (WIP) still hasn’t been announced for the Xbox One: Could this gen have more third party exclusives.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. wally10975

@15 Sega did the same thing with DreamCast, the console was before it’s time, and seemingly no one adopted it. I think what the Xbox One offers for it’s price is a good deal, seeing as how the TV features with Kinnect would require a couple thousand dollar SmartTV to replicate. But in saying that, it seems that more and more people each day are becoming independent of their Cable providers by way of Netflix, Roku, Amazon Instant, and the list goes on… In that sense, I’d prefer not to have to pay for these personally unused features, just like if I go on vacation, I’d like to be able to take my PS4 to a cabin and be able to watch a Blu-Ray if the weather is shiet outside, when I don’t have access to hardwired or wireless internet, or cell range.

valve will never win because all they sell is software and at the moment and they don’t have all the games on steam, no EA games no PS exclusives no MS exclusives, that’s a big loss compared to Sony and Microsoft revenues.

    #26 2 years ago
  27. Citrus raptor

@23 But why choose Valve, why not just acquire the game directly from the publisher?

    #27 2 years ago

  29. Phoenixblight

    @28

THere is nothing to suggest that Valve are even releasing a console. Valve announced a console then a month later they fired their hardware department then nothing. Plus with the Steambox and it being linux based they won’t have the same catalog as they do now. No developers is going to go through the headache of porting their games to linux especially so with triple A publishers and developers.

“We unveiled 20 titles for Xbox One, of which 17 are exclusive to this console. I do not think Sony can say the same”

@29 ~ Gabe has as good as confirmed it, though we probably won’t see anything definitive until 2014 at the earliest ~ I also seem to remember reading that anyone can install Windows on the Steambox if they wish to. Its not going to be a closed box like a console.

    #31 2 years ago
  32. Phoenixblight

    @31

I know Gabe confirmed it (as if that means anything) and as I said a month later Valve fires their hardware department. If you are making a console why would you fire the hardware department?

The sentiment is sound. A console generation is a marathon, not a sprint. The generation hasn’t even got to full speed yet – and some would argue that it’s not truly started. There’s a lot that can change.

@11 – Really? MS opens their own big mouths and so it gets placed on the web. MS truly is Sony of 2006 with their attitude and arrogance, I hope they get humbled this gen.

“MS had better games at the show” – They had Ryse and that was the only title that really grabbed me. Titanfall, I’d bet money, will come to PS4 later. Don’t care about Forza, Project SPark will probably also be on PC, etc, etc. Most games shown at both shows were multi-platform.

“Both systems are basically equal in terms of hardware.” – You need to do some more reading, because that isnt true…at all…..

PS4 has 50% more GPU Shader units than the Xbox One (gimped 7790 vs 7870 class GPU, go read extremetech and Anandtech)
PS4 is 33% more powerful GPU wise.
PS4 has almost 2.5x the memory bandwith vs Xbox One.

Games will look similar at launch, but give a year or two, and the games that take advantage of the PS4 will blow the Xbone away. Also, ieven if the game looks similar, the framewate, the tessellation performance, the antialiasing and filtering will be better on PS4.

I agree with you on the DRM though, but it wont happen, MS is too arrogant.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. UuBuU

@32 ~ maybe they wanted a change of direction ~ or maybe they just wanted to keep their staff numbers down, as they always do. I think we would know if the whole project had been scrapped.

Its also worth noting that the Steambox isn’t their only hardware project. They’ve also been looking into laptops, tablets and other mobile devices. Cutbacks in their hardware department dont necessarily relate to the Steambox.

  39. fearmonkey

@37 – I heard that, that Xbox one uses 6 cores and hold 2 for OS, that it only uses 5GB for games, andthat it holds 10 percent of GPU performance as well. Where the PS4 uses all 8 cores for gaming, 7GB for games, and no restriction on GPU. I didnt list it as I am not sure its a fact.

@11 News sites need to report news. It’s not trashing the X1. These articles are telling you exactly what Microsoft is saying. Microsoft is making a bad approach, it’s as simple as that. It’s not VG’s fault that MS has bad PR, they have to report the news.

    #41 2 years ago
  42. Phoenixblight

7GB is for games. Ps4 has far better hardware. MS is just betting on this cloud computing stuff to make up for what the PS4 does internally.

@32 no one has been fired concerning the Steambox. one or two small teams were terminated from other hardware projects, i think one was the headset like the Oculusv linked with AR and another to do with motion control or wearable computers i believe.

And if Gabe Newell marketed it right with enough reason for PC users to switch from there desk/laptops he would have 50 million sales easy.

    #43 2 years ago
  44. Phoenixblight

    @43

But Valve can’t and they won’t. They can’t compete with WIndows, Apple. I have no reason for a SteamBox. None. THe fact it won’t be able to play triple A titles and large portion of the indie games I have access to because they won’t go to linux. ANd Valve will never go purely linux. I have no reason to jump ship and there is little to no reason for any of the other console base to jump ship either. THey can’t compete with Nintendo, MS or SOny. So this supposed console is a niche device for those that love what Steam has so much that they will buy a console for it, just on brand name alone. A console that will have little to no support out of the box because of Linux at its core.

    #44 2 years ago
  45. UuBuU

@43 ~ I think the goal of the Steambox is more to entice console/living room gamers with the benefits of PC, wrapped in the convenient and unconfusing packaging of a console.

Some PC gamers are bound to want a new toy for their living room ~ but others just won’t see any value there at all. I don’t think Valve’s main objective is to convert all PC gamers over to the living room.

    #45 2 years ago
  46. Phoenixblight

“think the goal of the Steambox is more to entice console/living room gamers with the benefits of PC, wrapped in the convenient and unconfusing packaging of a console.”

Wait, see what happens, i know i wont be rushing this time. GTA5 for a start, gonna be playing that for months as i do have a job unlike a lot of kids who just wanna play COD 24/7

@46 ~ I must have missed the announcement where the Xbox one and PS4 were completely open platforms that also offered support for mods

    #51 2 years ago
  52. DSB

@46 Neither the PS4 or the Xbone are PCs though. They don’t offer the same level of functionality, and if Valve could underbid the other consoles on the market, then of course there would be a market for that.

Right now there are too many questions and too few answers to know exactly what punches they’re gonna throw, but that arguably also makes Valves job all the harder. Coming in in the middle of a generation (which is what it looks like at this rate) would be quite the feat.

Arguably the real threat lies in the consoles doing more of what Steam does. As long as the traditional consoles continue to get that wrong with online subscriptions and online checks, I think there’s still room for something new and improved.

Master race my ass. I have 156 titles on my steam library and I won a Ps3. Get over your high horse. We are all on this site because we love talking about our hobby, nothing more or less. Look buddy, I don’t give a monkeys. Fact is I’m paying less for higher quality games than a console owner, plus I actually get more and greater amounts of that content in the form of DLC and mods which console owners only dream of.

If you want to see a serious video games enthusiast, then look for someone who has invested in the hardware necessary to maximise those games.

So? What’s it matter if a gamer is paying more for a game. You have to pay for all the hardware and maintenance of your machine which just makes the cost of the game irrelevant.

@64 ~ What maintenance? My PC is older than the current gen consoles and hasn’t been upgraded once.

Admittedly I can’t play highly demanding games on ultra settings anymore, but i’m not a graphics whore so who cares? Everything still runs nicely on medium ~ and it would probably cost me a lot less than an xbox one or PS4 to upgrade my PC so that it outlasts the next generation as well.

    #68 2 years ago
  69. Pytox

@68 same for me my hd 5850 is almost 4 years old and still can do medium / high and with upgrade should be okay i guess :p

    @68

My PC was 600$ 2.5 years ago since then I have bought a 660ti(300$) I also had to buy a new Hard drive since the one that was in it originally died for additional (100$) that comes to 1000$ altogether for a 2.5 year old piece of hardware that I use for work.

Oh look my Ps3 all I had paid for is 300$(4 years ago) and it works still. That is the entire reason why people buy consoles.

    #70 2 years ago
  71. fearmonkey

Pc’s are great, Consoles are great, each have their own qualities that people may prefer.

PC’s can be upgraded, have the most power, and with today’s controllers, and modern TV’s having a HDMI port, work mostly like a console.

Consoles offer lower cost of entry, ease of use, better for a games collection, better for travel and gaming parties.

this is why I am not a fan of the Xbox One, If I take it to a friends house I have to bring the Kinect unit now, Requires an internet connection which can be spotty at times during these parties, disks are glorifed installation disks only, and the ease of use is more like a PC.

The Xbox one takes the benefits of consoles and throws them out thw window, and makes my console a PC with an extra box I have to lug around.

    #71 2 years ago
  72. UuBuU

@70 ~ A $1000 PC should outlast an entire console generation easily, without upgrades. If not you’re either very unlucky or doing something wrong.

    #72 2 years ago
  73. Phoenixblight

    @72

Not the point. If my work didn’t involve using my own computer. I could just buy a PS4 or Xbox One and be done with it. I bought the PS3 for the exclusives along with being a streaming box for my family and the same will happen with the PS4.

  74. lookingglass

If MS can make Xbox Live cross platform with the PC, it will be killer and they’re planning to do just that.

Not cross gameplay, but chat, friends list, seeing what your friends are playing, etc. Buy a game at work and your always on Xbox One downloads it for when you get home. Get a console game invite while you’re playing a PC game.

As a console gamer as well as a PC gamer, that makes the console choice easy.

I seriously sense some grovelling going on here, and some complete and utter damage control. They know they did not make the splash they had hoped for with Xbox One. Going full on with Kinect is something only fitness freaks would use and in all honesty I bet they would prefer the actual gym to using Kinect. Why reinvent the wheel when the wheel is not even broken. Control pads, and game controllers work perfectly fine as they are. Sure having lots of remotes for different things is a bit of a ball ache by a universal remote is only about £30 now and will do everything you need it to. Kinect sold extremely well in first few months as it was something new and it wasn’t that expensive and people jumped all over it, then after twelve months of no games to actually impressed it died out, same with the Wiimote and PSMove. It just seems Sony and Nintendo already realized this and have moved on from motion controls, still allowing it but not ramming it down peoples throats.

Also, by Microsoft saying that they are over charging for a console less powerful, has a locked in hard drive you can’t upgrade only expand with yet more devices attached to this device that is meant to be “The One” device for all things. Then charge so much more than its direct competitor, just because I can talk to it and wave my arms around like a damn baboon is NOT over delivering. Its delivering something that NO ONE WANTS. Then to go even further and block people from doing some many things is just ridiculous, tell army personnel to “deal with it” is NOT the strategy a multi-billion dollar company should be taking. It should be embarrassing its fans like Sony and to certain extend Nintendo are doing. Like, here is a console, go online if you like buy our stuff if you like, watch some movies and play some music, but here are the games you wanted. Not Microsoft, trying to sell a misguided console for so much and then having them ride it out with new titles that people don’t know are going to be good or not and to have so many of these so called exclusives actually happen to be available for other machines (ie PS4, 360, PS3, PC) is just a stab in the back to themselves.

    Unless they,

    1) get rid of their restrictions and go the Sony route,
    2) charge less for it,
    3) take out kinect and release a kinect-free version,
    4) make the damn thing more appealing to look at and smaller,
    5) actually make an online experience that doesn’t involve hundreds of ads,
    6) actually release some proper exclusives that are interesting

Then we can talk Microsoft, then we can talk.

Waooaw! let us speak facts here
1 ps3 is in 2nd after the wii -tho is was 1 year behind-
2 sony only needed to lunch at the same time with MS to take back the crown from Nintendo
3 playstation brand it’s global while Xbox brand more like a local -NA
4 in terms of exclusives Sony already has the crown and no one arranging about it

Bottom line we are only fearing that sony may kill this console like others before and the competition dies which is a bad for us the gamers, so plzzzz MS weak the f@#$ up and see what’s happening

I have never hoped for failure so much in my life, the Jimquisition put it well, “M$ haven’t declared war on Sony, or Nintendo, or even Apple. They have declared war on you, the consumer.”

If you have the grey matter for it you game on PC, if you are too lazy or dumb to handle PC gaming you buy a Playstation, if you have kids(or a raging nostalgia boner) you buy a Nintendo, and if you are a masochist gamer you think about buying an Xbone, and then have someone whip you with a Virtual Boy controller cord.

Yeah, no point in ‘winning’ an expo in which you are launching the gaming elements of your next generation console in front of the world’s press and tens of millions of gamers.

Sometimes, MS execs, sometimes you just have to know when to stop talking and shut up. It certainly wasn’t the song you were all singing in the weeks before the show, now was it?
