Killer Instinct reboot was Microsoft’s idea, says dev

Friday, 14th June 2013 01:23 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Killer Instinct developer Double Helix said it jumped at the chance to work on the franchise, but it was Microsoft who initiated the reboot.

“The idea to bring it back came originally from Microsoft,” design director David Verfaillie told Siliconera of the reboot.

“They had new hardware coming soon and were like, ‘the time is now, we gotta bring this back’. So we heard about the chance and jumped at it.”

The developer put together “an awesome prototype” in order to secure the job from Microsoft, he added.

Double Helix’s previous efforts include Front Mission Evolved. Killer Instinct is coming to Xbox One but has not been dated. It’s free to play.

we give you one character for free then we let you pay 20 dollars for each other character. this is a really awesome reboot of greed and nothing more.

Why haven’t you been banned yet? Your stupid ass only says the biggest bullshit one can’t even imagine. You act like you know it all, but in fact you don’t know anything. Yeah 20 dollar per character sounds very realistic. buzz off.

@3 That’s what I had thought too until I saw the E3 announcement, was really hoping for a great new KI game.

Double Helix who have brought us such fine movie tie-in game titles such as Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters and Battleship

@ how much are they charging per character? I really think this IS the model that fighting games should pick up in the future… specially for developed franchises like tekken

Ken Lobb, *not* Microsoft. I bet he had to fight for it too. Oh and I * totally* called Rare not being the devs, just saying.

Was happy to hear that KI was making its return.

Was simultainously bummed out to hear Rare wasn’t making it.

Of course it was their idea. Everyone thinks Rare will have made it since they made the originals, and they own the brand name.

The whole “Hey you get to play as one character, but you need to pay for the other characters” is just bullshit.

Sure its free, with one fighter.

The video Ive seen of it looked like shit anyway. It didn’t look like KI, it looked like a sluggish generic and sterile fighter with KI models in it.
