The Order: 1886 was in limbo until PS4 dev kits were released

The Order 1886 developer Ready At Dawn has confirmed that its steampunk PS4 title was in development limbo for years until Sony released its next-gen dev kits.

If you missed the game's debut PS4 trailer at E3 earlier this week, you can watch it here - lightning guns and all.

Ready At Dawn's creative director Ru Weerasuriya told Polygon in an interview that the game was in limbo for years, and that current-generation tech was incapable of hitting the goals the team set itself. So the team waited for PS4 tech to become available before proceeding with the project.

The studio is also known for its hefty God of War PSP prequels Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta.

Developed with the assistance of God of War team Sony Santa Monica Studio, The Order: 1886 is set in an alternate history where the industrial revolution has allowed for some pretty insane firearms.

Weerasuriy added that developing on PSP and PS4 has proven to be quite similar. "Ultimately you don't change your thinking when developing for one system or another," he stated. "Your thinking is you maximize what is capable on the PSP or PS4 hardware. The PSP was actually very powerful."
