Poll: tell us which next-gen console you will buy at launch

Friday, 7th June 2013 09:22 GMT By Dave Cook

PS4 and Xbox One will launch later this year. We want to know which one you will buy at launch – if any – in our latest online poll.

We want to hear what you think during this pretty exciting time in the industry, so if you have a spare second you can cast your vote over on our Facebook page.

Once we’ve let the poll run for a while we’ll announce the total and reflect on the decision in an article.

So, which are you going for? Let us know on the poll and below.

No point in doing that until I see the games…

If the Xbone and PS4 have the same policies regarding used games and always online, ill probably buy an xbox one.

  3. FeaturePreacher

PS4 at launch because they’ll hopefully bundle the headset and won’t force the use of a softcore device like Kinect and won’t require 24 hour pulse on every game. Plus free online gaming and no extra charge to use stuff like Netflix, Youtube. Plus I’m going to enjoy just watching how good or bad friends are at playing games through the spectate feature for ps4. I’ll get an XBone later if there’s a title I’m really interested in.

    #3 1 year ago
  4. ps3fanboy

the xbone is outta the question… the ps4 is the first pick but if sony goes the same way, i ain’t buying the ps4. so then only option will be a wii-u… but i am not that interested in a wii-u, so i will just stick with my ps3 until sony drops the support and then my gaming hobby will end…

by the way dave there is no exciting about gaming dying slowly in front of our eyes…

  6. The_Red

At this point, even games DON’T matter. MS is no. If Sony does it, it will also get a NO from me (I already own 2 Xbox 360s and 1 PS3).

  7. Bomba Luigi

Not an Xbox, thas sure now. But the Problem is, Sony don’t give enough Information what they do with PS4, so I can’t say If I buy that or not now.

    a ps4 hopefully

  9. Samoan Spider

@4 To be fair, it’s not dying. We’re just trying (and failing) to resist change which is inevitable in this world no matter what hobby you have.

I’m going for the wait and see approach. Show me the games and I’ll think about it, but as it currently stands, neither.

NExt Gen Console I am buying? Probably a new and better computer a month after all the consoles are released. Will be a few generations better by then ;)

    #10 1 year ago
  11. gameon

Probably none. I’m gonna play some old Xbox 360 games, the exclusives on the Wii U and then in maybe a year or so I’ll buy myself a game PC.

@9 Samoan Spider, wake up man it is dying. it is being killed by greed, this is not the next step in an evolution to something better. its customers rights down the drain, no person should ever support this.

Maybe better to do this poll after E3.

    #15 1 year ago
  16. Takeshi

Neither, too expensive and I would have little games to play. I’ll probably wait a couple of years.

    #16 1 year ago
  17. Fin

    None of this matters really.

Gamers are a bunch of morons. SimCity sold millions. Diablo III sold millions.
You know full well, regardless of how pissed off people are on the internet, Xbox One will sell out on the first day.

    Long-term, that’s what’s more interesting.

    #17 1 year ago
  18. TheLastDodo

I highly doubt I’ll buy either at launch.

After last night I’ve totally gone off the X1, MS will have to give me my perfect lineup of games for me to go near that thing.

As for PS4, well it’s reveal certainly wasn’t the best but as a gamer it appealed to me, however if PS4 has “features” like MS revealed last night then that just makes the Wii U way more appealing. I’m sure PS4 will have some but depending on which they are, I could tolerate them.

    #18 1 year ago
  19. heroes159

I think its still early for this poll. We still dont know Proper Details about PS4. So how about we just wait until E3 launch. its only a few days :)

    #19 1 year ago
  20. zrerz

PS4 for me, I’ve always been a dual consol user (since the old sega nintendo days ) and same for XBox 360 and PS3, having bought launch machines.
However, cost this time round is very much higher, so let’s see how it goes financially and I’ll see if microsoft and sky’s alleged deal goes ahead, meaning we are offered xbox one at a cheaper deal?

    #20 1 year ago
  21. Samoan Spider

@19 I think you get one vote on FB but can recast it so actually I think it’ll be quite interesting to see if things shift massively following the pressers from MS and Sony.

    #21 1 year ago
  22. Doomsayer

For me its gonna be both as usual. I always had all consoles, since i enjoy the exclusives the most. So while i liked the PS3 and my Xbox360, i always enjoyed the xbox a little bit more. Currently i have the X1 and PS4 on preorder and i cant wait for them to arrive.

Need to see E3, need to see pricing, and need to see what’s the partnership between Bungie and Sony, because at the moment that’s the game driving me forward for a next gen console. I know it’s coming current gen but I doubt it will be a nice experience there.

    #24 1 year ago
  25. ps3fanboy

@18 TheLastDodo, your like a crack addict ain’t you?… micro$haft have just to dangle a few games in front of you, then you buy the xbone. i’m quit shocked you are asking for games at this point… because micro$haft are destroying your gaming hobby and double dipping your ass as a customer. there is no room for a yes here, its a plain straight big NO, that is a given.

    @17 FIN
The real morons are the ones who support anti-consumerism and greed. Just because someone can afford something doesn’t mean they should still support it. It’s such apathetic, blind foolishness that allows these companies to exploit the consumer. Voting with your wallet really works in sending a message to a corporation better than internet rants, but the amount of sheep too stupid to realize the damage, and that their money is power, is what keeps allowing this shit to continue. Don’t be surprised when XBOX LIVE Gold increases to $100 this next generation.

Now to the topic at hand, which console will it be? Wii U, and PS4 if Sony does the right thing at E3.

    #28 1 year ago
  29. mistermogul

I am leaning more towards PS4 at the moment (and Wii U!)…

  30. TheLastDodo

No I’m a PlayStation gamer for the last 16 years.

Owned one PS, owned two PS2′s, owned two PS3′s, own one PS Vita. I also own a 360 and used to own a 3DS.

You give PlayStation gamers a bad name,.

    RE: X1

After last night it will take a monumental lineup of games, I’m talking unattainable things, to even consider going near that thing but I’m a gamer first & foremost and if PS4 follows X1 to the same levels MS are taking the X1 then I’ll be avoiding a PS4 and picking up a Wii U.

    #30 1 year ago
  31. TrickyAudio

Xbone is worrying me, so its looking likely I’ll grab PS4 at launch.

  32. Oynox Slider

Im disappointed, that you guys, also do such a silly poll. All polls which were release the last weeks had just one intention: To “destroy” the Xbox and make it worse than it is.

  35. Blue Oni

I’m waiting to see Sony’s move.If they follow MS’s steps then it’s Wii U only for me this gen and i’ll continue working on my huge PS3/PS2/Wii/DS/PSP backlog.

If Sony goes to the opposite direction of MS then i’ll buy a PS4 sometime next year along with a Wii U.

  38. Clupula

Can’t believe I’m going to say that I agree 100% with PS3Fanboy, but I do. At the moment, it’s a PS4. But if Sony’s policies are the same as Microsoft or if they announce that you have to pay to play basic multiplayer, then I will just stick with a PS3 until the system is no longer supported, at which case, I’ll just find a different hobby.

    #38 1 year ago
  39. Maguire82

Ps3 fanboy I’ve owned loads of Sony products in my life time and I find that sony have no idea what there doing at all. There products don’t work well with each other if at all and there good at leaving you high and dry with no support. There pony and there’s nothing more or less you or anybody else can say about them.

    #39 1 year ago
  40. TheBlackHole

    Depends on the games.

why would it be any other way?

    #40 1 year ago
  41. Clupula

@40 – Did you just call him a pony, as in trying to calm him, with “there, pony,” you know, the thing you’d say while stroking a pony? Did you imply that Sony have a pony and just forget to spell it “their” to indicate that they own such a pony? Or did you imply that Sony, themselves, are ponies, in which case, you’d have to write “they’re?”

Also, I doubt it’s the last one because ponies don’t usually form corporations.

    #41 1 year ago
  42. NiceFellow

@41 I’d normally agree – but I’m starting to think “fuck the games”. I really do not like the direction Xbox is taking and I’m seriously thinking about skipping it no matter what exclusive they fund or moneyhat. Right now I’m looking at the situation and thinking ok – what will the next Xbox enforce then?

I really feel that backing this device might well be a tipping point down a slope I don’t want to go – no matter what Candy MS wave in my face in terms of 30 day exclusive DLC or whatever.

I have no problem with the core device, but the polices around it and the way Live as progressed does not agree with my consumer principles (yup, I may be a gamer but I still have ‘em).

  46. TheBlackHole

@43 That slippery slope is the same thing Steam has been doing for a decade.

    Digital only sales
    Licensing, rather than owning content
    No lending games
    No selling on licenses
    Online verification
    Limited offline mode

But everyone loves Valve, right? Because they sell games cheap… except that it’s the publishers that set the prices, not Valve.

“but Valve welcome competition, like gamersgate, and gamefly, and…”

Except that those companies are selling Steam codes, which gives Valve 20-30% per unit and also gives them another user.

IMHO the only people this should be shocking is console gamers who have no experience of PC gaming.

    #46 1 year ago
  47. merrc

I’ve owned both x360 and PS3, but was always more into Xbox. After the announcement last night, buying an Xbone is pretty much allowing micro$oft to do whatever they want in squeezing as much money out of the consumer as possible. Plus, they’ve already saturated the x360 with media. Remember when you could boot up the 360 goes straight to dashboard and start a game.. Now you have to wait while all the shit media I don’t care about is loaded. Even advertisements. History repeats itself, and I have an eerie feeling we’re headed for another ’83 video game crash.

    #47 1 year ago
  48. bitsnark

Reckon I’m gonna hold off voting until after E3, otherwise its going to be obviously (and very heavily) skewed in one direction coming off of the pre-owned clusterfuck and little else.

  49. OlderGamer

    I don’t do Facebook, sorry.

But for me I already own a WiiU. I have been telling you folks that the system is very good. And it is. I am happy to stick with it, PS3 and my PC for a very long time.

I have stopped gaming on XB360. I just feel so dirty turning on a MS system.

If the PS4 doesn’t try and follow the X1, I will buy a PS4 down the road. Maybe at launch if the games are really good. But right now, I am comfortable not buying either new system.

    #49 1 year ago
  50. viralshag

    @47, +1

Totally agree with you. As a PC gamer, most of the things the Xbox One is doing changes very little to me.

    Can’t trade games, check.
    Always online, check.
Able to do more than just gaming, check.
Online check in? Bandwith problems? Yeah sure, let me just put my 5-10gb game download on hold…

    #50 1 year ago
  51. Samoan Spider

@47 Another +1 here. It’s not surprising to me. With nearly 9 years of using Steam I remember being there at the start and thinking it was the worst thing to happen to platform of choice at the time, then before I knew it, it’s second nature to log into Steam and check the specials. Console only gamers now, are where I personally was back then.

This is what I was trying to say when I said it wasn’t the death of our hobby. You can hate the direction, or you can make the best of it and continue to enjoy our hobby of choice. But the publishers that we’ve been buying games off for years have decided the Used games free lunch is over and retailers have to make allowances. If you want to play games, both consoles will let you do that. If you want to buy used games, both consoles will let you do that. If you want to borrow all your mates games without buying stuff, neither console will let you do that. If you want cheap games, upgrade your PC and have at it. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. But you won’t convince me to give up my hobby. Your arguments for why it’s bad don’t affect me and at the risk of sounding like GHz, I’ll continue to enjoy my hobby without a thought for anyone that gives up.

    #51 1 year ago
  52. viralshag

@52, Hell you can have a +1 too.

Growing pains is all it is. In a few years people won’t even remember all this hullabaloo.

Unless of course the majority of potential customers really do hate it and some of us were totally wrong and consoles gaming dies with this gen…

    #52 1 year ago
  53. Samoan Spider

@53 Yeah lol, there is that too. In 10 years time E3 is run by Nintendo who despite being given the verbal shaft by core gamers survive the coming Great Console War :)

  54. viralshag

  56. Trollin4Noobs

It’s funny how these ‘gamers’ bitch about online always and no used games. The only ones not complaining are the ones with a pc. No used games. A lot of them run through Steam, which means u must be online to play. Ya there are a few that don’t but majority do. I could care less about the next gen used game or online policy. What I’m waiting on to make my decision is whether or not ps4 will have an online subscription like Xbox live. If not, then it’s ps4 for me. If both, I guess it’ll be a coin toss.

    #56 1 year ago
  57. DSB

I’ll be abstaining this time. I’ve owned an Xbox, PS2, Wii and 360 (2 of them) in the most recent gens, but it seems to me like the hardware companies are moving in a pretty negative direction, so I’m not in any rush to compliment my PC this time around.

I may jump in around the first pricedrop, and I would be getting a PS4. But that’s only if they restrain themselves from following Microsofts example.

  61. fearmonkey

On these comments, its always refreshing to see the people who bend over and take it telling us welcome to the new age.

Just because your willing to bend over and take it, doesnt mean everyone else is. I will continue to support my hobby, but I will not support the methods and policies of whats best for corporate over the consumer.

Having to jump through hoops and worried about what I can and can not do with something I buy isnt for me, but maybe its because I am old enough to remember what gaming was like since the beginning.

Xbox one is literally a Steam box without the benefits of what makes Steam great, and even more restrictive. Required and connected Kinect, though it can be turned off once the unit is on, requires a connection to MS every 24 hours (Where steam has no offline restriction), prices will never be as low or as good as Steam, and this is the NSA’s dream, perfect for PRISM.

I may or may not get an Xbone one day, but MS will never have my support like they did with the 360, and Sony could have it, depending on what they choose to do. I expect they will have DRM, but hopefully it will be less restrictive overall.

    #61 1 year ago
  62. Samoan Spider

@62 I think that’s what it’ll come down to. Not who and who isn’t restrictive, but HOW restrictive one is over the other.

I cant vote yet because I dont know for sure that Sony aren’t pulling similar restrictive, anti consumer rights crap like M$ are.

You might find this interesting then: Playstation 4 can still be enjoyed old school without an Internet connection at all

    #66 1 year ago
  67. lookingglass

    Xbox One.

Not only will the Xbox get all the multi platform games, it will have exclusives of its own. And good ones at that since MS is breaking out the wallet for them.

XBL is just way better than PSN having used both. The entertainment options are something the PS4 can never offer. Smartglass let’s me do more awesome stuff without having to buy a separate Vita.

Then there’s Kinect, which is future tech whether you like it or not. Voice and gesture will do for computing what touch has done the past few years. Yes, I’ll talk to my Xbox. I’ll be able to operate from anywhere in the room without touching a thing. MS wants it to go far beyond Siri and that will be cool.

The PS4 offers better graphics and some exclusives of its own. I have a PC for graphics and that has VR and super-hd monitors.

The Xbox One is the more future proof console and offers far more than the PS4.

I’m with you on that. It seems MS will get several third party exclusives. It remains to be seen though if those are timed exclusives or permanent exclusives. I agree about Xbox Live. I prefer the dashboard way more over PS3 and even though Sony is no doubt going to improve on what they offered, i still have more faith in MS when it comes to these things. Same as with party chat and all that. A lot of people fully expect that everything will be top notch with PS4, but Sony has plenty to prove there if you ask me.

I agree about Kinect too. I’ve did a lot of reading and it actually sounds really cool to use, outside of gaming. I’m far from certain yet that it will be great for games too. So i sure hope they won’t shoehorn Kinect, they said they wouldn’t, but it always remains to be seen. While i do expect that PS4 will offer better graphics in the first party games,it really remains to be seen how this goes with third party. The details on the CPU and GPU are still not very clear of the X1 and who knows, the difference could actually end up not being so big at all. We’ll have to wait and see.

So yeah, so far i’m definitely aiming for the Xbox One for the end of the year, if i can afford it and if i WANT to afford it when i have a game like GTA V. That’s a game that i will totally play to death. E3 is going to be very important. GAMES!

A lot of people are very negative about Xbox One and i can see where they arre coming from, but it’s not a big deal for me. My ONLY concern really is…what happens after well….7 or 8 years? When the fourth Xbox is about to come out. What will happen to these servers and if MS stops them, will all our games be unusable?

    #70 1 year ago
  71. GwynbleiddiuM

Since Xbone will need a reliable internet connection, and mine isn’t I wouldn’t even consider it, especially with all the negative things it brings to the industry. As far as PS4 goes, I’d rather wait and see what sort of games it will have, though I’m more than sure that i won’t be buying anything at launch. I’d prefer to upgrade my PC to something of monstrous proportion. And this is all in next year’s calendar.

I’m tired of multiplatform shit, it dampens innovation and encourages simplification. Back in the PS2 days I was really happy both as a PC gamer and as a console gamer. Today with all the lines blured into one another I honestly don’t see the point of having a console. It’ll be a lot cheaper than a PC, but it’s a limited platform.

    #71 1 year ago
  72. sh4dow

Price/performance ratio of just getting a new graphics card is better. In fact, I just got one on ebay that is ~30% faster than the PS4′s GPU for ~300€. Until the PS4 will be released, it’ll probably be sold for that new, not used. But do you think the PS4 is going to be cheaper than that?

Now I know, there’s more to a console than a GPU but… since I already got all the other parts in my PC and it was a decision between console or graphics card, this simply didn’t enter into my equation.

Then there are the games. Over the past years, the number of great console exclusives has been decreasing. And the few that do exist don’t justify buying such an expensive piece of hardware for me.
Plus, I prefer the way indie games are handled on PC. Whether it’s GOG or buying from the developer directly – there’s no evil corporation in the middle that takes way too much of the cut for way too little in return (well… except for Valve…).
And I like to be able to adjust settings to fine-tune a given game’s visuals to my liking according to the fps trade off. Same goes for FOV and such things.

And then there are the underlying issues with Sony/MS simply being horrible companies that have done quite despicable things in the console market. Well… at least Sony did in the past and it looks like MS will try to in this coming generation. The console market (or at least gamers who feel like me) are really in desperate need of a “new SEGA”.

Neither. The XB1 is out of the running entirely, due to its unacceptable restrictions. The PS4 is a possibility, but I need to make sure that it doesn’t end up equally restricted one game at a time, by the likes of EA. I figure a year or so of observation is prudent. If both consoles fail my requirements, I’ll most likely go back to PC gaming, where control is entirely mine, legal or not.

I think this will be the first time i will not get the other two consoles at launch, i will wait to see if publishers doesnt force Sony to make a Microsoft move and if microsft will realize the mistake and correct things along the way, but the really first candidate will be ps4, i just purchase the WiiU at Launch and love zombie U, Lego City and monster hunter.

@77: This situation is not at all like Steam. Most importantly, Steam is on the open PC, where control is entirely yours. Check around the seedier corners of the internet, and you’ll find circumventions for any restrictions that Steam dishes out. But even without resorting to pirate methods, there is a lot more competition on the PC. The alternatives make it possible to secure your access to your own purchases, as well as drive prices down.

On a closed console, one party controls everything. If that party is consumer-friendly, the platform is likely to be worthy. If that party has nothing but corporate interests in mind, and completely shackles the consumer, then it’s foolish to support it.

The ball is in Sony’s hand. Tell me good things and I’m game.

If they don’t, I agree with @#50 and others I really am good with what I have now, a Ps3 & (a 360 just to play Witcher).

My backlog is massive. It’s gonna take time to clear it and then here comes GTA, The last of us, Saints Row 4, I’m too deep into this generation to really even care.

Interesting, the number of new people who seem to think that the XBox One is the superior choice is more than just suspicious. Where did you all come from?

Anyway, I’d probably buy neither. I’m always someone who buys consoles at a later stage. If I had to choose though, it would easily be the PS4.

@93, well I would go Xbox based on what we know but that’s because I have more faith in Live than I do PSN but that’s based on this gen impressions so that could change.

Ultimately, for me it comes down to who has better online systems and of course the games which hopefully we’ll see at E3.

@93 – Maybe it’s the supposedly hired MS employees paid to write positive spin in comments. You know, like they did over at Reddit.

I noticed on Major Nelsons blog yesterday a huge number of down votes and suspiciously positive comments that appeared all of a sudden even though 99.9% of previous comments were negative with many positive votes…

Probably could’ve written those exact words, myself.

@96, like you I play mostly online. I like the whole “SP offline” experience but things like pro clubs and ME3 MP fills the gap between those types of games.

I just wanted to put my opinion of the next gen consoles and how I view them. Most of this is opinions so don’t take it as fact.
The console i’m buying is the Xbox One. Because it’s an giant leap forward from the Xbox 360. With microsoft announcing titles at E3 that will be available on Xbox One And the 360. And at the press conference with microsoft showing people how the xbox works by demonstrating how the kinect and smartglass work with the Xbox One. And switching between TV and game on the Xbox One. Microsoft did the right thing by waiting until E3 to show there exclusives. I can see sequels to many of those games like Ryse 2 or Sunset Overdrive 2. Microsoft also did the right thing by telling people that you will need to connect to the internet every 24 hours in order to play. In my opinion it shouldn’t be a big deal. I think Sony was just thinking that if people complained about this problem on Xbox One they were going to do the exact opposite which they did. The PS4 is 100$ less than the Xbox One and can play used games and even doesn’t have to be connected to the internet every 24 hours. But at the Microsoft press conference Microsoft convinced me that the next gen kinect might actually have potential in gaming. So does smartglass. Imagine you’re playing a game like battlefield and you’re a player that likes to examine the map to see where objectives or your teammates are. I can imagine using smartglass on my tablet and have the map on smartglass. And when you find time look at your tablet and examine the map more closely and detailed and be able to zoom in and out. But that’s just my imagination. Microsoft left an certain feeling of joy after their press conference and E3. Microsoft has me thinking about the Kinect,Smartglass and the exclusives coming to the new system. PS4 didn’t leave any feeling of excitement and I feel like that Sony is like a annoying little brother to microsoft. I haven’t even researched the PS4 as hard as I have the Xbox One but so far people can’t really give an good intelligent answer as to why they are getting the PS4 besides saying it’s cheaper, can play used games, doesn’t have to connect online every 24 hours Or just because they are a fan of PS. But with the Xbox One you could say that you would like to see how the exclusives are,see how kinect reacts to your actions or to use many of the amazing Xbox One features like snap or skype.

Stop stop STOP STOP all this online bullshit!!!!!!!!!! That’s the problem with this world, they think everyone is rich. Hey Microsoft, news flash…NOT EVERYONE HAS THE INTERNET! Not everyone can afford it. Not everyone likes it. We are turning into Russia. They force it on us, you want to find a job, internet, want to do this or that…internet. We are trapped by it, a prisoner and can’t see it.

Screw the stupid ass internet, just make a damn system like always where you plug it in, put in A GAME DISC and go. Why the fuck would I want a game online that I can’t touch and can’t take with me???

Next you’ll have to hook your damn car up online so it can update before you drive or you won’t be able to get to work!!! Stupid stupid down right stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the game companies were smart (which they are not, and getting dumber by the year) they would make a damn cartridge based system, games could be on a thin card like SD with no load times and no worry about scratch’s.

CD’s are OUTDATED solid state can hold more than a blu-ray. Imagine a game several times the size of Skyrim on an SD!!! Something you can actually hold in your hand and take with you to your friends system and play. You can SEE what your money bought.

Online? Shit, might as well be into Ghost hunting, can’t touch it it’s inmaterial. Who are all the idiots that want this shit? Their morons. There is not one single plus about getting a game online, unless you like waiting for downloads, or receiving a corrupted file cause it didn’t download right, or not being able to touch what your money bought.

What in the freaking hell is the matter with you people??? Ya, you buy and store all your games then your systems breaks and you lose all your games…real smart!!! Then you have to download them all over again! What if your downloading and the internet goes out? Or your connection is interupted? It’s a bunch of useless bullshit!!!

Give me a game disc any day over this shit. Some say, “well, the games can be bigger.” Well, my response is, GO TO FUCKING SOLID STATE ASSHOLES! Problem solved, on a single SD you can have Skyrim 4 times over!!! They say, “oh but that memory costs the companies too much.” No it don’t, they just got so used to making 900% profit they think they can’t survive without robbing people.

The whole point with CD’s was to bring the cost down cause there less to manufacture. Did we see a price drop? HELL NO!!! New games were still $60.00 at release. I won’t buy any new system, I’m through, Microsoft can kiss my ass and go straight to hell!!! I wish the internet would crash world wide, worst damn thing man ever created.

Besides Forza 5, there are no must have games for me and I don’t plan to pay $500 for one game. Next year should be better.

I’ll just upgrade my video card and keep gaming on Steam. I’m actually waiting to see if the PS3 get’s a real price-drop.
