CCP fans buying PS3s for DUST 514, developer claims

Friday, 7th June 2013 04:31 GMT By Brenna Hillier

CCP believes a demographic it describes as ‘DUST 514-curious’ are buying PlayStation 3 consoles specifically to play the free-to-play shooter.

“We already see that Dust 514, during open beta, had been driving hardware sales for Sony,” CCP business development vice president Thor Gunnarsson told Destructoid.

“We actually track that together. We know that our fan base, Dust-curious players, are buying the PlayStation 3 to get into our game.”

Gunnarsson doesn’t believe the imminent arrival of the PlayStation 4 will throw obstacles in CCP’s plans to have DUST 514 last at least five years.

“What we hear, anecdotally, is that PS3 sales are increasing. Sony have done a phenomenal job of managing console transitions, like they did with the PlayStation 2′s cost and size reductions,” he said.

“We can make the logical assumption that something similar will happen as the PlayStation 4 comes to market. If you look at the large third-party publishers, you’ll see that Sony is not falling away from the PlayStation 3. What about Grand Theft Auto V? It took Square Enix years to come to the PlayStation 3.”

DUST 514 shares a shard with EVE Online, and the two games economies interact; EVE Online players can even support DUST 514 allies by dropping orbital strikes on opposing factions during contracts.

Dear CCP, let me make this clear.
There are good games out there, games that worth to by even if it’s for the old consoles. Games like Darksouls 2, Boyond Two Souls, The Last of Us and so on, you get the point. Those are the games I will bother staring my PS3.
DUST514 is nowhere near to one of those games. You released this game but it is still a damn Beta, as good as no content, boring and dull with a lot of bugs. You know what I’m talking about, you see the tons and tons of complains in the foums.
As soon as a decent shooter arrives on the PS4, no one will bother with an unfinished product on an old console. Naming: Dust514

CCP must have some pretty zealous fans if they’re getting PS3′s for this. The game might be great someday through patches and fixes (though with the PS4 coming, if they dont move it there i cant imagine them bothering to put much support into this) but as it is now its just average. There are better reasons to get a PS3, this game really isnt one of them.

There are also people who bought a PS3 only to play GT5.
There are also people who bought a PS3 only to play wipEout HD.
There are also people who bought a PS3 only to play Journey.
And there are people who bought a PS3 for games that aren’t even out yet *cough*Versus 13*cough*
Also, there’s probably people planning to buy a PS4 only for Planetside 2.
    So what?
It’s marketing babble CCP uses to aid their ailing shooter. Nothing to see here, move along.

First of all. Eve Online was also in the long beta and when it was released it was a bugfest POS with horrible performance. Now it’s the best Sci-fi mmo out there.

They are going to have a beta stage for at least 2 years and a lot of EVE Online fans are buying PS3 just for DUST. I know at least one guy who bought PS3 just to play DUST and nothing else. He is not interested in The Last Of Us or any other game. He plays on the PC, Eve Online is most of it and now DUST 514.

    Driving hardware sales? Yup!

I was one of them, I’ve been a PC gamer for the better part of 2.5 decades. I bought a PS3 to play dust based off the customizations for your character, and the support for mouse and keyboard! Down with controllers!

It’s an awesome game. Still has some rough patches but overall a damned good F2P game!
