Saints Row 4: Collector’s Edition – Super Dangerous Wub Wub Edition announced for North America

Deep Silver has announced the Saints Row 4: Collector’s Edition – the Super Dangerous Wub Wub Edition. It is now available for pre-order at all participating North American retailers in limited quantities.

Included in the Super Dangerous Wub Wub edition ($99.99) is a 12- inch Dub Step gun replica and comes loaded with song directly from the in-game Dubstep Gun and a laser sight.

Additionally the edition comes an 8-inch Johnny Gat Memorial Statue and a pocket-sized Dubstep Doomsday Button.

Fans purchasing the collector’s edition will also receive all in-game items from the Commander in Chief pre-order bonus.

The Super Dangerous Wub Wub Edition of Saints Row IV is now available for preorder in North America and will only be available as long as supplies last.

Saints Row IV launches August 20 across North and Latin America and August 23 in the rest of the world.

    I rarely get Collector’s Editions and this is no exception (by the way, another symptom of the video game industry going the way of the comic book industry, “special” and collector’s editions all over the place), but I AM getting the game itself when it comes out. Looks interesting, and I enjoyed Saints Row 3 more than I expected.

    I’m just not sure I want Saints Row 3.5

    They’ve shown a bunch of gimmicks, but they haven’t really explained why the game would be better than the last. And it does need to improve.

    Saints Row 3 was fun, but it was also very very light on the gameplay and pretty forgettable afterwards.

    That’s my main problem. I can fully support insanity and being over the top but this time, the craziness feels like a quick / rushed element introduced to a piece of DLC in order to turn it into SR4.

    Many people who’ve said exactly that (including you), have also said that Saints Row 2 was the best Saints Row. The weird part of that is ist hat Saints Row 2 was only effectively Saints Row 1.5 as they’re doing exactly the same thing with this as they did with Saints Row 2.

    I’m confused. Either Saints Row 2 is kind of shit, then, or this will be fantastic as it builds upon the original in the same way as Saints Row 2.

    @9 I never played the original Saints Row, so I have no clue how it relates to SR2. I’m not sure how I’d rank SR2 compared to SR3, and I’ve never called it the best. They have entirely different strengths and weaknesses.

    SR2 had far better minigames, where SR3′s felt like they were squeezed in at the last minute.

    The story of SR2 had more “meat” on it, but ultimately it revolved around cheap plays for emotion. Friends and girlfriends dying, essentially, and I thought that was a pretty ridiculous thing to put in a game that may have you covering entire neighbourhoods in human waste a few seconds later.

    On the other hand, the story of SR3 was basically non-existent, and while that’s better than an awkward sob story, it still doesn’t leave you with a lot of motivation to do anything.

    Pretty much any technical bit of SR2 is inferior to SR3, so ultimately I think SR3 is more fun to actually play.

    I don’t know how to rank them to eachother, but SR3 clearly has the best gameplay, so that would be my choice.

    That doesn’t mean I want a rerun, or that it wasn’t terribly flawed in a lot of ways.

    Anyway, in my opinion they’ve done enough different with this to make it new and interesting. As I said above, they’ve taken III and they’re building on it, in the same way as they handled the first two games, as I mentioned above.

    Yet now it has super powers, a wubwub gun, and they’re embracing the silliness. This is getting to a point where it’s like Champions Online and you actually have to have an imagination and a sense of creativity and fun to enjoy it. If you have no imagination, then what you end up doing is creating a Hulk clone and then getting fed up with the game real quick. Instead of creating a freaking swordsman steampunk pirate werebear! (Yes, I will keep linking that as it proves that I’m more creative than the vast majority of Champions Online players.)

    Some games, every now and then, are aimed at people who have an imagination and a sense of fun. They’re colourful, intrepid, strange, and silly, and they allow you to exercise your creativity. In Saints Row III I ran around as a werewolf in a suit, and I’m looking forward to being even more creative in IV. I just dig this kind of customisation and silliness. The games that actually care about customisation are far, far, far, far, far too few.

    But then I’m always kind of on the outside of gaming. People love their military shooters every year with barely anything changed, and their Assassin’s Creed diet, and their grey-brown environments. And frankly, those people have fucking dull game libraries. I couldn’t do that, I’d go absolutely stark raving crazy.

    I’m always longing for games to distinguish themselves by being different, and colourful, and fun.

    To be honest, I’d put The Amazing Spider-Man over pretty much any military shooter released in the last decade and say that it’s a better game, because for me it is. The same goes for Prototype, or… I don’t know, hell, Scribblenauts is more compelling. I won’t bring To the Moon into this because that’s unfair to everything else, being the best story told within gaming for decades and decades, and we’re talking more about fun games here than intellectual ones. (But I like both, and To the Moon was still more colourful than most games.)

    My Steam library is likely impossible compared against that of the gamer average, containing Bastion, Blood Dragon, Darkspore, Dino Run, Dust, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution alike (which avoided the grey problem just enough to not irritate me).

    But yeah. This game is for me. And people like me. It’s just a shame that people like me are more rare than the military shooter fetishist.

    @9: Frankly, I think a lot of the “this is just DLC they’re trying to con people into buying as a full game” talk is people that simply demand huge changes even when they’re unnecessary. That’s not to suggest there aren’t cases where that really does happen, or condoning companies to try to get away with things, but I think this is just sticking to what people liked about Saints Row 3 and expanding upon it rather than trying to reinvent the wheel when they have nothing they want to do just for the sake of appearing to provide “innovation.”

    Same issue as the complaints about Remember Me supposedly being “bad” if it didn’t have collectibles (it does) or sidequests.

    Oh PLEASE, I had to force myself to complete SR2 minigames, except for the “waste management” ones, while those in SR3 are actually fun, with the Professor Genki ones as the best.
    The better part of SR3 minigames is that Volition actually tried to differentiate them, so the “driving around” ones are either as escort service or riding a TIGER around the city, something SR2 didn’t.

    What’s sad about that though is that a Saints Row update is going to be more innovative than the Call of Duty tripe they shovel into their gaping maws every year. There’ll be more that’s engagingly different about this game than there was between the last two Call of Duty games, so I see through it. It’s an excuse. They don’t know how to approach a game like this, a game that doesn’t try to pretend to be UTLRA-REALISTIC, DUDES.

    You know, it’s actually that fetishism for realism that bothers me, and I’ve mentioned this before. The only reason I even played Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Dishonored? I didn’t have to kill. Both of those games pissed me off for making it annoyingly tricky and hard to do things in a non-lethal way at times. Especially for me as a disabled person. Lethal was far, far easier, but I’m just not going to do it.

    In a more realistic game, killing people (yes, even digital humans) really unnerves me. I don’t like it. There has to be a layer of abstraction… but most people seem to want a realistic murder-men-with-guns simulator. Maybe it’s a compensation thing, I don’t know. Military shooters do tend to be a sausagefest.

    But yeah, like Remember Me, it’s disappointing because I know every year these people will be shovelling the same military shooters down their throat. Basically the same game with minor differences. Then they’ll complain about Saints Row IV, a game which does more to innovate than their military shooters have in the past decade or more.

    I will add my point in the First two saint row games were really crazy but also serious and i enjoyed that element, the story was also pretty good. Then in SR3 and 4 they just forgot their roots and ditched the seriousness that i liked in addition to SR3 story being forgettable and weak.

    I know what you mean. I think the problem is is that everyone has an ‘amount of fun one can actually handle’ slider and not everyone can actually have theirs high. So they prefer more mundane, repetitive, and even skinner-boxish content because that’s about as much fun as they can handle. This is why the grey-brown colour palette has become so common, because if you make something too fun, it alienates people.

    That’s fucking sad when you think about it, but completely true. You just have some minds that can’t imagine fun past a certain degree, you have some minds that are just limited. It reminds me of the Matrix, to a degree, where they first put humans into a utopia but their batteries died off in droves because many (but not all) of the humans in that reality couldn’t actually accept that it existed. They needed the mundanity and boringness of day to day life in order to keep going.

    Some are just like that. As such, they’ll see a more boring, repetitive thing as being more fun. They don’t crave novelty or difference, they just want familiarity. Cloying familiarity. And I know that this is true of the one you’re talking with as they ran the same raid dungeons in WoW for years on end, something that I got sick of within the first week. By comparison, I’m a creature of novelty.

    I’m sick of the grey-brown. Gimme Saints Row, fun minigams, super powers! I want this!

    @14 Professor Genki is the biggest cop-out of them all in my opinion. It’s not even a minigame, it’s the very same gameplay, in a smaller room, with scoring.

    It’s alright I guess, but it feels rushed as all hell.

    Certainly some of the minigames in SR2 had a learning curve, but I really miss the pornstar protection missions. It was a lot of fun to find different ways to “take care” of the assailants, and they obviously put a bit of thought into it.

    @17 That would make sense if the observation you’re basing it on actually supported your argument, rather than the exact opposite.

    What you get in SR3 are essentially grinding missions. Take a tank, shoot at everything, bing, succes. Take a helicopter, shoot at everything, bing, success. Take your weapons, shoot at everyone, bing succcess.

    In SR2 you had a lot more thought put into some of those activities, they actually had their own mechanics, and that’s obviously why some prefer them.

    SR3 doesn’t. It puts you in a vehicle you can already hijack, and lets you shoot at stuff that you can already shoot at on your own, and adds a scoretimer.

    It’s cutting corners as opposed to making it something interesting.

    The plot of ALL Saints Row games is fucking weak when you compare it to just about any other story of worth. You just perceived the plot to be better because the prior games were more serious. If you want a story then there are games and other forms of media out there that will provide you with one. Next you’ll be telling me that Grand Theft Auto has a great story.

    Okay, ducking out of here before I get too depressed.

    The fact of the matter is though is that there’s enough proof that what I say here is worryingly true. Some people just have their fun-slider set at “grey-brown” and it won’t nudge up even an inch from there. When I look at these people from the perspective of someone who’s actually capable to enjoy fun and funny things, I feel hugely depressed.

    If I could, I’d grease their fun sliders so that they could enjoy more than their limited palette of bland gaming. And it’s not like people who have to eat bland food because due to prices they might have no choice, it’s like… being able to eat a healthy, tasty five-star meal and then choosing to eat bland noodles.

    Some people take way, way, way too much comfort from the familiar. Their comfort boxes must be small enough to cramp their brains, on occasion.


    This is why the gaming mainstream is stuck in something of a shithole, because you have far too many people who fetishise the grey-brown and don’t want to try anything that exists outside of that. So genuinely novel entries like Saints Row IV, Remember Me, and so many others get overlooked. I feel bad for the games.

    And some days it’s just surprising to me that so many of us humans have absolutely no idea what “fun” is. No idea what novelty or creative-thinking are. If you took them to Disneyland, they’d probably just hide away somewhere and play a military shooter on a mobile gaming device.

    @18 What you’re describing are the Mayhem missions and, if I recall correctly, they were also in SR2, albeit in a more boring form.

    SR2: take gun, shoot everything; change weapon, rinse and repeat

    SR3: take gun, shoot everything; take tank, shoot everything; take helicopter, shoot everything

    @24 All of the activities in Saints Row 3, with the exception of Genki, Tank Mayhem and Guardian Angel, are also in Saints Row 2.

    That’s the problem. They kept those that were quick and easy to implement in the new engine, and left the best ones behind. It feels rushed.

    For the most part, these “minigames” are just gameplay with a timer and a counter added. Although the Tiger in escort is indeed a nice touch.

    They took Insurance Fraud, Escort, Heli Assault, Snatch, Trailblazer etc. and left behind the best minigames like Septic Avenger and Crowd Control, which were certainly my favourites, and obviously a lot more detailed than any of the minigames in Saints Row The Third.

    For a sequel, I don’t see how that can possibly be cause for applause. They should build on what works and cut the stuff that doesn’t. They did the opposite in terms of activities.

    @15: Yeah, unfortunately we’re stuck with idiots for the majority consumers, increasingly so each year it seems as we’ve seen games that people used to rightfully criticize start to be treated like they’re masterpieces.

    Good projects don’t get the support they need over stupid reasons, terrible projects get massive support because idiots buy into the company line without putting actual thought into what the company and its people say. Lack of real knowledge and analysis is prized fairly highly, hatred for the past is rampant. We’re in a state where the mere fact of having a diploma and having passed the requisite classes is treated as having more value than whether or not you actually know your shit. And if a person sucks at attacking the message, they’ll resort to attacking the messenger in an attempt to silence them from saying what they don’t want others to see.

    There’s not much hope at present for the industry when these are the types that buy games.
