PS4 to be “a great platform for MMOs”, says DCUO producer

Sunday, 2nd June 2013 23:56 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Sony Online Entertainment’s Larry Liberty believes the PlayStation 4 will prove to be quite MMO-friendly platform when it launches later this year.

“I would expect that, with all of the amazing features that have been announced for the next PlayStation, that it will be a great platform for MMOs,” the DC Universe Online executive producer told NowGamer.

Although it harbours a corporate relationship, Sony Online Entertainment is a games publishing entity distinct from Sony Computer Entertainment, the division that produces PlayStation. It is best known for its PC games, like Everquest and more recently Planetside, and only recently began investing significantly in consoles with DC Universe Online.

“We’ve learned how to work with Sony Computer Entertainment. They’ve become a great partner, and are genuinely interested in effecting change that will make their platforms work better for free-to-play titles,” Liberty noted.

“We also learned about the types of content that appeal to console players. Of course, we also have a much better understanding of how to optimize for a hardware specification that is a bit less flexible than the PC,” he added.

The PlayStation 4 is expected to launch in the 2013 holiday period. Stay tuned to E3 next week, where we’re expecting more concrete dating and likely pricing too.

Thanks, Lengendaryboss.

    A great platform with casual MMORPG games without macros or any depth.

    Well, no.

    I’d like to see the PS4 do well and will probably buy one if, in fact, it turns out it is the (unconfirmed) consumer friendly platform in opposition to Microsoft’s (unconfirmed) base and demonic villainy.

    But let’s not go crazy here. It’s still a console. Console MMOs are bad. At best you can fool a whole slew of JRPG fans into thinking your bad game is *not* bad, but even then the smarter of those will just play it on PC.

    It’s interesting to see what Sony Online Entertainment is going to do with “Everquest Next”.

    If Everquest Next will be on the Ps4 with PC release then it’s dead on Arrival. I don’t want shitty gameplay with 16 buttons without any macros in it.
    They already released a sup-bar Planetside 2 with bugs and in the end it’s community is not that big like they hoped it would be.

    Must be because it was released along side a console version huh?

    I really enjoy DCUO and hope that PS4 sees many MMOs. I’m crossing my fingers for that Monster Hunter one out of China.

    @Erth MMOs that’d come to PS4 will play more or less like Diablo 3 PC, Neverwinter, Tera, GW2, etc. Action paces, not many active spell/abilities in order to fit them right in the control scheme. Or they’ll be shooters. All in all I wouldn’t mind if somebody makes a good playable and lore driven MMO on PS4, it might trick me into buying one.

    Everything that has been successful on PCs have moved to consoles. Its the way it is. The only genre that hasn’t successfully done that, is RTS because of the control scheme. Some developers have tried but it hasn’t worked as of yet.

    MMO’s can work on consoles. If the devs werent lazy they could even lave the KB/M GUI up for use for people on consoles who play mmos with Mouse and keyboard.

    THe ps4 should be able to be more versatile this time around.

    I also forecast, That PLanetside 2 will make an Console appearance, with 1 server dedicated to cross-platform play.

    @phoenix,
    “Everything that has been successful on PCs have moved to consoles.”

    Nope.At.All.

    there is Lineage 1-2? World Of Tanks or World OF Warcraft on consoles or Kickstarter Planescape Torment successor? Everquest 1-2?
    where is Neverwinter Nights on consoles? Where are Ice Wind Dale series? Diablo 2? oldschool fps, adventure games?

    Everything that is simple moved from PC to consoles, but not everything that was successful.

    so with your bullshit assumptions you can go and F yourself as always because you know nothing.

    “what ever a console can do a pc can do it 100 times better”
    I would seriously like to learn this math. 100 TIMES?

    @13,
    Wargaming is making a console title, who knows what it will be.

    @14: That would be pre-kindergarden math.
    @13: Way to purposely missing his point in the full comment, genius.
