Xbox One: E3 showing ‘will get it right’, says Greenberg

Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:06 GMT By Dave Cook

Xbox One’s games will be the main focus of Microsoft’s pre-E3 conference this year, and chief of staff for interactive entertainment Aaron Greenberg has addressed several fan concerns on Twitter, stating that the show will get it right, that Microsoft loves indies and that many current fears are based on assumptions.

OXM has collated all of Greenberg’s tweets on the matter, so we’ll just spool them off here so that you get the full picture.

Greenberg recently stressed that E3′s main focus will be to focus on Xbox One games, but many gamers have grown fearful over details slipping through the net.

Key issues include potential privacy breaches via Kinect, the console’s region-locking, and pre-owned activation fees.

Come Microsoft’s conference on June 10 we should have a clearer picture on all of the above. What do you think?

It’ll be interesting to see all the back peddling and damage control at their conference. They will have to seriously pull something special out of their ass to get people on board again.
Sony are in a very strong position at the moment and only really have to show the box, demonstrate the operating system and user experience while showing off a few games to come out on top here.

@1, No it’s a way of saying that people are assuming a lot of things about the console that’s complete bull and that e3 is essentially its proper reveal, game-wise anyway. (Hopefully).

Exciting times! I cant wait for E3! Both consoles should show what they can deliver hoho!

    @2

Yeah, after the botched unveiling, E3 has to primarily be damage control.

No, it’s a way of saying that people are assuming a lot of things about the console. That’s all.

@6 yes its exciting times in deed, and micro$haft showing up at e3 will be like bringing a lamb to the slaughter. it is going to be entertaining for sure…

  9. Hcw87

Would you rather that they spend 2/3rds of their E3 Conference talking about TV/social/kinect? I’m glad they allready got this out of the way so they got more time for games at E3.

Sony will probably have to spend more time talking about social/Move/allways-on/used game fees etc at E3 since they used alot of time for games at their reveal.

  10. FrankWhite

To be fair, “too much to show in one day” is bullshit. They had the entire day, they spent a week building an outdoor tent. They controlled the reveal event and it was insufficient.

Microsoft really better step up if they want to have a chance this gen. A week ago, Xbox was the king and WiiU already lost, this week, Xbox is dead on arrival and WiiU sales are up. That is how bad Xbox reveal was, they went from first to last in a single day.

I hope Microsoft realizes the stakes, and aren’t counting on a bunch of uninformed customers to compensate for the loss of the core gaming market. Seriously Microsoft, if the Adam Orth shitstorm wasn’t enough, then you have to learn from the reveal backlash. You are on the precipice of marketing failure, E3 is your last chance.

Basically my heart beats for Sony, but I was amazed when I bought my x360 some months ago and saw how awesome the games are (if you ask me the graphic looks sharper/better in the most games). And I think the games on the Xbone will be very nice and good looking too. But I dont like the Kinect think, thats what keeps me away. And I dont even care how awesome the games will be as long as cant plug the thing out, it will be not bought (and I really would to).

    #11 2 years ago
  12. ps3fanboy

@10 seriously what is there to step up?… the xbone the fact(no assumptions) its always online, it block used games, it depend on cloud to run games properly because it lacks the cpu powers, its not a gaming console but a anti customer tvbox with a spycam… they had their chance and lost, xbone is done.

    #12 2 years ago
  13. Samoan Spider

@12 Everything you’ve said there is assumptive. The fact is, there’s fuck all facts. Why not wait and see? I know you’re name suggests you’ll be making love to your PS3 for a long time to come, but you comment on every…..single….XBO…..article! So you must have a little love in your heart :)

I for one hope that they do step up and show what’s really going on in a couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to both pressers. This is a good year for gamers whatever anyone says, so why don’t we wait for some answers from everyone. Sony being silent is not a good thing though and it concerns me a little.
I don’t want to cut my nose off to spite my face though and I will play a game whatever the device. That said, I won’t fall for PR crap from either side.

@14 sorry to say it, there is no love to give to drm and anti consumerism. micro$haft think they are doing an revolution apple here “taking over the living room” but their not, innovation have never ever been micro$hafts stronger side. this they have shown again and again with windows their os or their failed mobile phones/tablets.

Tbh I think MS can only get it right after the piss poor messaging of their XB1 reveal last week…

    #16 2 years ago
  17. SplatteredHouse

@16. They first need to satisfy and deliver on an environment that I’m willing to accept in a console, before I consider buying their new machine. Atm, they’re 0/1. If you consider it like baseball, this E3 is a serious, high-stakes pitch for them to take and I will see how they do.
I’m not about to throw out, or consider less important what I am seeing today.

    #17 2 years ago
  18. mark_t50

I honestly just don’t see how they can make this right unless they come out at E3 and announce:

1). Machine will work without ever having to connect to the internet, including playing single player games.
2). No blocking 2nd hand sales or lending of games.
3). Kinect is optional, should someone choose to they can put that thing in the trash can, or better yet they release an XboxOne pack without the Kinect included to save money.
4). Microsoft makes it very clear where they stand on ‘Game Ownership’ and apologise publicly for ever daring to mention that a customer has to ‘Ask Microsoft for permission’ after paying for a game.
    5). Online multiplayer is free.
6). Added services payed for by Xbox live Gold are included for others outside of the USA, or they are given a discount on the price of Gold membership until such time as the services are offered in their region.

That’s my own personal list, not that I expect any of the above to be done. Instead I think MS are going to spend the next couple of weeks frantically trying to change the way they tell us none of the above will be done. They are basically going to whisper sweet nothings in our ears while shafting us from behind.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. Maabren

    @mark_t50

I agree. MS has to address those system details. But at E3 it’s all about kinect games and cloud power.

    #19 2 years ago
  20. Mike W

    @1

Hey at least he’s indirectly admitting the reveal was a failure. ;)

I have my doubts about MS’s E3. Everyone keeps talking about these 15 exclusives, but like I stated in one of my previous posts we already know three out of that number, (Forza 5, Ryse, and Quantum Break) four if you count Black Tusk Studio’s game.

We know some Kinect games in that number, so I don’t think we should get our hopes up. I’m pretty sure MS is going to pull a Halo or Gears card (or both) to get the sheep back on their side. But we will see in couple of weeks.

    #20 2 years ago
  21. Bomba Luigi

I guess they planed to do the Reveal right too, no one plans to totaly screw it.

And to be fair, I doubt anybody will do any good E3 Show. The Last Time I saw a great E3 Show is so long ago I can’t even Remember. When your lucky you get 5 Interesseting Minutes in a 1 Hour Show.

I really don’t watch E3 Show anymore. Just reading about what happend is more than enough for me.

Ah well everyone has a bad gig from time to time, nothing new there.
It appears they have as much as Sony games wise so not really a problem I imagine.

In fact I think Sony are showing off the new bungie game which is multi so chances are we seen most of Sony,s game offerings already it would appear.
Also the minecraft guy got a ps1 so that may be heading to 4.

I reckon there will be nothing between them games wise.

You heard it here first. :)

  24. Malmer

If you think PS4 won’t have DRM and similar used game system as the X1 you are very naive. If Sony had a different scheme they would have printed t-shirts to hand out with that message by now.

Oh and btw. The X1 doesn’t “block” used game sales. There will maybe be a minor bump in the price. Ooooh! Scary! And no, the number you heard is an assumption and somewhat of a misunderstanding.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. Malmer

    Quote ps3fanboy:
“the xbone the fact(no assumptions) its always online, it block used games, it depend on cloud to run games properly because it lacks the cpu powers, its not a gaming console but a anti customer tvbox with a spycam”

    Ok, here goes.

    1) It is not always online.
    2) It doesn’t block used games.
    3) It doesn’t depend on cloud to run games. Games can use cloud if they want. Wait till you see actual games before making assumptions about the box’ performance.
    4) It is not a TV-box with a spycam. Because 1) tv-features does not exclude other features. Or is your PS3 only a photo viewer-box? 2) Having a spycam is illegal, so if they did it they would end up in so much trouble it isn’t even real. The camera isn’t even on when the console is in standby. Btw. I hope you won’t have a smartphone with a camera that you carry around all over the place. Because, beware! it is a spycam!!! …or maybe not. (PS. The PS4 will have a camera included too)

So all in all, everything you listed as “facts” was false and/or assumptions.

  26. SplatteredHouse

@25 Who holds the cards, between Microsoft and Sony on this issue. Sony already wrong-footed MS by grabbing 3 months of headlines and consideration.

If Microsoft has walked down a dark alley, and EA’s announced “strategic partnership” was cemented on an agreed stance regarding the platform holder’s policies – MS cannot outright BS everybody. They’d be found out and discredited, in short order if they flat-out lied about their stance on DRM onstage at their conference, and any ambiguity after that time will not go unnoticed by the media. Overall, one can only assume that EA would be amongst those seeking the elimination of used games from the ecosystem of gaming with some tenacity.

So: If Sony leaves Microsoft to sell their anti-used DRM and Kinect-dependant box (remember, too, that Sony’s E3 presser is scheduled to take place after that of Microsoft!) and then, Sony step on stage at their conference and announce that they are not going to be following suit with these unpopular measures unveiled not half-hour previous by their competitor. They have another idea on the future of gaming to put forward! What does it mean for Microsoft if that happened?

    #26 2 years ago
  27. Samoan Spider

@27 Have you ever turned an oil tanker? That’s kind of how Sony and MS are. They aren’t ‘fluid’ and ‘dynamic’ companies. They’re behemoths that will try very hard not to bite the hand that feeds them. We don’t pay these companies. Retailers don’t pay these companies (except the boxes themselves). Publishers do! If Sony were to do as you say and then every subsequent publisher conference announced that their multi-platform titles would now in fact be XB1 exclusives, they’d be in the shit. And whilst we want to believe the PS4 is the ‘gamers’ box whereas the XB1 is the ‘casuals’ box, things will change REALLY quickly!

    #27 2 years ago
  28. Clupula

@28 – That’s so very unlikely to happen.

Publishers would not give up 40-60% of their sales by going XBone only. It’s just a stupid assumption with no basis in reality.

@29 Maybe, but equally as likely is the assumption that Sony will be the Knight in shining armour to the gaming masses.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. SplatteredHouse

    @26:
    1) Maybe not, but it is delivered on the assumption of an internet connection, and it may be (has been stated TO BE) merely a matter of time, until the box needs to phone home to Microsoft for validation, if current sources are accurate.

    2) You’re right. It doesn’t merely block used games.
It cock-blocks them, which is at least just as bad. Their system is set up in as duplicitous way, which enables Microsoft to state to the uninformed, or less-interested that they somehow “support” used games (grab those headlines), all the while, at the same time proceeding to run a blade maliciously and directly into the side of the premise.

    3) There are quotes from Microsoft execs, that the intent is to encourage progressively increased off-loading of tasks to the Cloud. It is “not required”, in the same way that you “do not” require an Expansion Pak installed in your N64 in order to fully enjoy Perfect Dark, or Turok 2.

YOU are kidding yourself, if you suppose that Cloud is in any way an optional extra, to be able to enjoy forthcoming Xbox One games as intended. But, don’t start waving your flag, just yet! Oh no. Because you also have to consider development cost. There is sure to be a thriving third-party release slate, once these systems gain traction.

WHICH setup is likely to become the more commonly adopted, the default – are creators going to spend resources, time and man-hours to code games to offload tasks out to virtual servers, IF they also have to consider the players unable to benefit from the extra capacity (and, don’t forget the bandwidth/latency stumbling block entered into the conversation by Digital Foundry, yesterday.) – ALL while trying to manage costs!

To 4) I’ll simply add to fanboy’s point about Xbox One, that it does appear, there is documented comment to the belief, that that machine is embracing some anti-consumer practices, and that stands, Malmer, because you didn’t even attempt to counter the suggestion.

Let’s introduce some facts into the conversation, next time, if we’re actually going to try to have one!

I love how all Xbox news have approx 60-70% posts from the PS4 fan boys, it’s almost as if they have to regulary share their opinions to make sure others share their mindset that the PS4 is still best. While there aint many PS4 news lately, it sure would be nice being able to check comments regarding xbox news that are not filled with the same 10 guys who either say they are getting a PS4 anyways or spouting out reason 1-10 why they know MS has failed and Sony has already won the console race… Getting real tired of your shit VG247 commenters.

  35. SplatteredHouse

@34: Surprisingly enough, I’m neither of those things. A further thing I’m not is that knowledgeable about Cloud technology.

So, when a respected source tells me, providing reasons based on fact from their own understanding and observation that claims made by Microsoft are, in their view, “wishy-washy”, and the people providing those claims have been seen to be not fully aware of as much as the valid potential uses of what they are claiming!

I compare that to what I know, consider what info is at hand, and decide that since they can back (and did) their beliefs about the Xbox claims, UNTIL I see evidence to decide the legitimacy, either way of MS’ claims, then that view is more simply as close to accurate (or fact) that we have, until proven otherwise.

“The details (namely Cloud) you speak off have not been released yet” So, Microsoft didn’t stand in a packed auditorium last week, and mention a server mass numbering 300, 000?

So what you guys are saying is that you all know how the MS Azure Cloud API is going to work? it’s specifications, limitations and requirements?

Saying “look we don’t know everything yet, don’t call speculation facts just yet” is not being naive.

The above is a reposting that appeared as first search result when I went to look into MS’ server tech. It was originally posted on Microsoft’s official/tech blog, the day following the Xbox One Reveal.
It is penned by the “Corporate VP of Corporate Communications” at Microsoft, a Frank Shaw.

Look under the “Services” heading: * [a large number (300 000) of servers]

“That’s * how you deliver a highly scalable, highly available service to tens of millions of simultaneous users, and provide the kind of split second switching between games, television and entertainment apps that we witnessed yesterday.”

How drunk must this man be on his employer’s homebrew that he’s suggesting that the power of “the Cloud” is responsible for allowing the split-second switching (since reported to not be real-time demonstration, but I’ll let that be) and…NOT the three-part operating system native of the Xbox One, which we’ve already been made aware is loading, and storing data between these sections to enable multiple concurrent “apps” to run onscreen seamlessly.

Another high-ranked Executive at Microsoft seemingly with an odd impression, if any at all, of what their new machine is likely to offer consumers. :(

Ok. I’ve been chomping at the bits to say something on forums, comment sections etc. I have both the 360 and ps3. If I had to pick I’d say my 360 is my favorite between the two. Still love my ps3. That being said it is so sad how radically dumb some people sound on places like this. All of these people shouting on rooftops about rumors we know nothing about yet kind of irks me. Because atleast half of these rumors that many of you scream bloody murder about have been addressed and are quite the opposite of what many on here say. That’s number one. Number two is regrading the used game “fee”. Now I’m not 100% about this but all it is is them getting money from places like GameStop and the like. Nothing to do with us consumers. And I for one can support that. As long as the devs are the ones getting the extra money and not the publishers. And finally, I like to think people really are smart. Bc if ur on here posting then you must be a pretty big gamers. So it boggles me that you can post about assumptions when they have already debunked some of this evil M$ propaganda. So that means that either the people ranting on here about anything anti Xbox are either utterly dumb or just little sheep following the current trend. To be apart of something for the sake of feeling like they belong. Now that being said I remind you I’m not defending m$ or pumping up Sony. Bc I, obviously unlike most of you, realize that m$ and Sony are rivals bc they do relatively the same stuff with the same products. So that leads me to a logical conclusion. M$ and Sony will have basically the same practices put in place. Do u really think for a second Sony wont implement around the same, exactly the same, or worse types of features. Come on people. Use your heads. They’re both in it for the money. If one does something drastically different then the other wins. Unless that drastically different thing is groundbreaking. But let’s face it. They’re both far too conservative to stick their necks out and try something new. The fact that Sony hasn’t said a peep about the Xbox reveal should tell you a sh*t load. If Sony wasn’t doing all the same things they would be telling everybody and their mothers?!? Think people come on. Your better than that. And as far as reading into what m$ did or didn’t say just stop. They didn’t say the Xbox one doesn’t rape women and children. So it must then, right? They’re just press conferences. Relax. But one thing that bothers me about the Xbox one hate regarding the conference is that they did say its only a short feature to show us the system and stuff it can do. Not a full fledged reveal. And they said a bunch of times E3 is all about games. So just stop with all the tvbox it doesn’t play games shit until E3. What did Sony do so good at theirs? They acknowledged they dropped the ball big time with the cell processor and said our machine plays games. They had to take they approach bc if they didn’t then it would be over for them before it even started. Trust me people Sony has a bunch of “entertainment” features too. Before any of you give me shit I will be getting both when they come out. No fanboyism. I’m just getting fed up with the console wars and people just ignorant shit about things they don’t know. I’m sooo sorry for the rant. I usually just read and never post. But I couldn’t hold my tongue anymore. Sorry if I offend anyone. That’s not my intent. I just want people to be a lil smarter about things. I love gaming and everything gaming related. I’m so excited for the next gen and I just get so bummed when I see hate for anything. It’s a business. First and foremost for these people. And we really should support the ones who deserve it. I’m totally for used games. But if ur over 15 why are u still buying used? Is it that hard to save $60 for a game. I’m not rich at ALL. But I can do it. Used game profit goes to GameStop. And that’s not right. The publishers as far as I’m concerned shouldn’t get a cent more than whatever they backed the game with. And profits should go to the devs and their over worked, under appreciated teams.

@ROCKNROLLA see that’s what I’m talking about. That’s just ignorant bro. I’m getting both. Because I’m a gamer and I like to enjoy everything. I’m not gonna blindly support something just to be a fanboy.
People who can only afford one is totally understandable. But if u can get both then why the hell not. Both systems are gonna provide some really great exclusive games.
Ur telling me u wouldn’t wanna experience them just because of the brand name on a piece of plastic.

“Sony has to decide if the PS3 is a games console or a home entertainment device. The 360 is a games console.”

@42: “Number two is regrading the used game “fee”. Now I’m not 100% about this but all it is is them getting money from places like GameStop and the like. Nothing to do with us consumers. And I for one can support that.”

Publishers set Gamestop’s prices, and do you believe eggs so aligned that Gamestop would not pass the inconvenience of any used games fee right back on to consumers in the form of increased games prices? Do you suppose that they are just preparing to hand over millions of dollars – as if their shareholders weren’t already reeling from the financial market’s reaction last week…(think about the effectiveness of a raise in price per copy to Gamestop’s profit, given the volume quantity sold to their customer base.) Would that in any way, help increase the video games market?

“Used game profit goes to GameStop. And that’s not right.”
They’re continuing to provide a valued service to a receptive audience, not offered elsewhere. Of course they deserve to profit. They are offering a convenience that increases footfall and goodwill towards their business – THE SAME business that is a prime shop that people looking to buy games go to to pay for new entertainment.

“The publishers as far as I’m concerned shouldn’t get a cent more than whatever they backed the game with.”
Interesting view. Given that the publishers are largely considered to be the ones twisting the arms of platform holders for a double-dip option, and as for developers, they’re not now, NOR have they ever been, paid-per-copy. Their role is singular.

They create and form the game. Which is then mass-produced for publishers to play their part in distributing. For your argument to stand, we’d need to go right back to the manufacturing plant and beyond along the chain of production for any item, in order to satisfy that all the participants in the creation of an item had been properly reimbursed, for its continued sale!

Yeah mikey you make some very good points apart from the wall of text which I took the time to read btw. :)

A lot of folks reckon MS and the 360 was one of a kind as regards getting it right.
I personally disagree with that viewpoint as windows has been my computer experience from day one and have never had a problem with it.

I remember the old joke years ago about windows getting the viruses and apple not getting them and the reason was that apple weren’t popular enough so had to take a back stage or something to that effect.

I mean take the outrage of always online for a start.
Most days I come home from work my wife is still logged in to facebook yet will have left the house 3 hours earlier.

She aint worried about privacy as she actually has a life and just forgets to log off.

    Kinnect is another issue here.
The plug that keeps it on is your friend ie pull it out.
Used games. Well I am sure MS are saying why should these greedy sods milk the consumer whilst killing the industry after all they put nothing back in anyway so shag them.

If they charge me a fiver to activate my used game I may just decide to get the original and support the dev rather than the rip off game stores.

@49 The console, and the Kinect come as a bundle-deal? Every time you want to play the machine, you will be unable to do so without its inconvenient new buddy.

No disrespect splatter but this is all csi teenage paronia in all fairness.
Not sure what age you are but I am a 50 year old gamer who stopped believing that nonsense.
Oh they have a database sure they have and so what.
I played a game of pitch and putt earlier then took the dog for a walk so sue me.

Do you turn your mobile off when you leave the house?
Utter bullshit and npnsense m8 they can track your calls for the last few years so kinnect is hardly something new.

    #50 2 years ago
  51. SplatteredHouse

@52 You misunderstand. I’m not specifically opposed to Kinect because of those kinds of reason. I don’t feel that the solution Microsoft showed at the reveal show in any way fits with how I do, or would want to, enjoy my entertainment. So, for me that device represents a cost-add married to an ongoing inconvenience, the cost of which would “raise” the price of the console, for something I can very well do without, and I’m not interested in using. :)
Thank you for your jumping to conclusions, and wild speculation.

    #51 2 years ago
  52. mikeyc25

@REASK thanks. I was just really passionate about that and totally forgot about the burden of no paragraphs.
@splatteredhouse I know publishers set the prices for new games for places like GameStop. But not used ones. Maybe if GameStop didn’t over charge for their used games and didn’t make SUUUCH a huge profit off them then the industry probly wouldn’t have made a big deal about it now.
Later on down the line probly. But not now. And talking about always online and blocking of used games. What’s funny about that is you always have pc players chime in. And the fact that they’re thought of as “the master race” is funny to me because PC for the most part is always online and they do block used games.
Wether or not its a good thing is a whole other can of worms. But regardless if Xbox one does it or not. Eventually every console will do this. It’ll be interesting to see everyone’s reactions when that happens.

    #52 2 years ago
  53. mikeyc25

GameStop isn’t doing anything new. Used products have been around for over 20 years. But since used games are a product unlike most things they were able to get away with more than usual.
DRM sucks. No one likes it and that’s the right response. But video gaming is a business. And with piracy and used games they have to do something to turn a profit. It costs a lot to make games. Much more then ever. So before u hate on companies for doing it try and look at it from both perspectives. I don’t like it but I understand why. Just wish there was better ways to give devs money for what they worked they’re asses off on.
