Rift going free-to-play this weekend

Wednesday, 29th May 2013 09:21 GMT By Dave Cook

Rift developer Trion Worlds is opening up its doors this weekend as the game will be free to anyone who owns a copy of the game already.

The announcement was made on Twitter this morning:

It comes as Trion is taking steps towards making Rift entirely free-to-play in June, so this could be considered as a little appetiser of what’s to follow.

Let us know if you plan on checking it out.

Thanks Massively.

Is there another way to get it free for 5 days without buying it, because I don’t call that ‘free’ otherwise?

@2. The announcement tweet clearly states free to anyone that owns it. If you own a copy, you can play without sub for that time. Look for some lower-priced retail stock, and see how you feel after 5 days of play, if that’s what you’re going to do. :)

Alternatively, you could try Rift Lite, which lets you level up to 20, and offers no gameplay restriction beyond, nor requires billing information.

    Wasn’t it going full free-to-play?

@4 Yes, in June, but this is a taster of what’s to come.

Imo, Rift > WoW. Esp if you tend to be the lone wolf type of player. If you are a self described hardcore raider, then no. But it is a solid game all of the way around.

@OG, While I mostly agree I think it’s worth adding it is good for players looking for smaller dungeon size instances. Cross faction guilds and instances was a good idea and helps you find a group a lot easier.

I played a little while ago and the game is still a lot of fun. The only reason I’m not playing it now (or any other MMO) is because TOR is the only one I’m willing to put time into… amazing what a difference a decent sociable guild that runs raids can do for a game.
