Xbox One shatters pre-order records at Blockbuster

Tuesday, 28th May 2013 15:22 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Xbox One doesn’t have a solid release date or a price yet, and still, a record number of pre-orders for the console have been reported by Blockbuster UK.

According to the retailer’s head of games, speaking with MCV, the firm is “delighted by the huge number” of pre-orders received so far.

“At Blockbuster, we have a fantastic array of adrenaline-fueled console games for sale or rental,” said James Morton. “With Sony releasing the PS4 in the near future, the next few months are going to be an exciting time for our staff and customers at Blockbuster and we can’t wait to hear more details from both Sony and Microsoft at the E3 Expo next month.”

Xbox One was revealed last week and Microsoft has promised E3 will focus on gaming content, a subject which was barely skimmed during the console’s announcement.

Yeah the XBoxOne is XBoxDone……. Oh shit, wait, whaaaaaaa?

This just goes to show that some shouty little fanboys need a dose or objectivity. MS is in the business of making money, and they have a made a product that will make them money whether you like it or not.

I’m very much coaching a wait-and-see attitude. Come E3 I’ll know which way my bread is buttered.

People are just stupid… give them less (more restrictions on how you can use your device, blocked used games, mandatory Internet connection) for a more expensive device and so far, no real significant improvement over the previous device and they’ll just buy like sheep…

But I’d be curious to see the real figures about pre-orders.
And let’s wait a bit until concerns over privacy, mandatory connection get known: we’ve been talking about it for some days now but it’s only started to arrive in mainstream press (see the article in “Der Spiegel” in Germany and other articles that are starting to release).

Anyway, as said before, if both consoles go with such restriction, no more consoles for me…

So they pre order the console and never return to blockbuster because they wont be able to play rentals?

  5. Droid

Well yeah, there won’t have been any pre-order records for the Xbox One to have beaten yet. :D
Anyway, enough with intentionally misinterpreting the words, as I’m not really sure which surprised me more, the fact that Blockbuster still exists, or the fact about the pre-orders. Why would people pay extra money (a non-refundable deposit), for something that doesn’t even have a fixed price, and solid details on yet. Seem to be a lot of people out there with cash to burn in this time of uncertainty in the financial markets that the newsreaders keep harping on about.

@4 Blockbuster have been switching their business model to retail sales certainly over the last 12 months. Nearly going down the shitter will normally force a company to take a look at how it can sort itself out. Rental just can’t sustain them any more with Netflix and Lovefilm stealing their main business.

    @3 What a load of sh*t.

Yea, your so smart. What restrictions? You mean all the craps you guys pull out of ur asses.

I don’t buy used games (I do borrow from friends sometimes), my 360 and PS3 is always connected to internet, I play mostly multiplayer games. Kinect is always watching, yea like i give a f*ck.

XBox One is perfect for me, no issues here. You don’t like, don’t buy.

Blockbuster? That’s the source! xD The original piece looks more to be a PR outreach to me, masquerading under the guise of “news”. It’s like, I don’t know – I’m kind of mystified at why isn’t this being greeted like the naysayers did of Amazon’s 875% Wii U uptick story. Blockbuster is some light in the fog, now? 0.o

I can only suppose because the name carries greater historical weight/importance in America? Whatever.

  13. NiceFellow

lol blockbuster. How long have they been taking console pre-orders?

I mean I think the Xbox One will sell fine (not convinced it’s going to dominate worldwide anymore than 360 did) but blockbuster UK is just about the least useful good news on sales I’d have thought.

Block busters ? Beat a record? I think the record for pre orders from block busters was 100 when the wii u came out, no true gamers would pre order from there

    #14 1 year ago
  15. SplatteredHouse

Barring some freak geographical fluke that means they can neither order online, or they had no physical option but to go there for their machine, I struggle to believe it would be most people’s first port of call.

  16. Samoan Spider

@15 Why not? I pre-ordered my 360 with Comet and my PS3 with WHSmiths. You can order from anywhere these days

  17. livewired500

@13 I don’t think Blockbuster has any relevance left in the US. I didn’t know they were still in business. I can think of 5 or 6 Blockbusters that were withing 10 minutes driving time. They have all gone out of business and been that way for well over 5 years.

  19. orakaa

@11 : so if your neighbour don’t mind having a cop in front of his house you have to be okay with it too?

I LOVE selfish guys who think if THEY are fine with something then EVERYBODY else should have to agree.

It’s about HAVING THE CHOICE, do you get that? It’s perfectly FINE if YOU like to wear hockey pants at home. I like video games, and I like to play them however I want. If YOU want to play online all the time, Very good for YOU.
If both Microsoft and Sony go this direction, I won’t have a real choice.

    - I don’t want to have the USE of games I OWN be dependent of some companies’ servers, because I want to be able to play them in 5 or ten years if I want to. Heck I still play NES games from time to time to make my daughter discover some good oldies.

    - I don’t want to have a monitoring device at home reporting god knows what to god know who

    - I want to be able to give or sell my games if I want to.

    - etc.

My local BB stores(USA) are all dark empty buildings. The last one closed this past winter. If the headline had read Gamestop, Toys R Us, Target or Walmart it would have some wieght behind it.

Blockbusters, lol, have they ever even done console pre-orders apart from the Wii U and maybe the PS Vita ? Not trying to belittle this story, but it sounds more like a struggling UK retailer trying to get in Microsofts good books in order to be including as a partner in this 2nd hand sales scam they’re going to have going next gen.

Regardless, I fully expect people to lap up the Xbone, most people don’t go online and read gaming websites, or protest on twitter. Heck, most don’t give a flying crap about DRM or if Kinect 2 is watching you have a tug. It might make me cry a little on the inside to see gaming going this way, but all those millions who don’t give a damn are going to rush out and buy it. As much as I can fantasise about how nice it would be for eveyone to order a PS4 over a Xbone and sock it to the man, it was never going to happen sadly.

I think it’s time to accept that core gamers don’t mean anything anymore, outside of a small number of people who are horrified at what this means for the future of gaming (myself included), most people don’t give a toss.

I’ll stick with my PS4 pre-order unless Sony do something equally as stupid as MS, in which case it will be Retro gaming from now on for me. The rest of the world can sit there waving their hands and shouting at their TV’s for all I care.

so this is coming from Blockbuster, yeah that is a reliable source, hahaha!.. this is only a pr outreach, masquerading under the guise as news. micro$haft is really getting desperate now for some good pr. this is just hilarious.

  23. SplatteredHouse

@21: Agreed, this source is kind of weird. If there are all of the sales for the console and that’s how this goes; so be it, but other than a statement of fact that carries scarce weight of import, then I find the article tone odd.

It’s like “NEW CONSOLE SHATTTERS PRE-ORDER RECORDS at Blockbuster.” Hopefully, that details my feeling clearly about the article. I used to enjoy visiting Blockbuster a lot, but the story’s hardly valid, imho.

    @20

Yea, am selfish and your not?

You say it’s about choice, and you have a choice…

You have to be very silly to believe that the One won’t sell well. Yes it has had some very bad press (most of it deserved), but there are millions out there who won’t give a crap about persistent connections and a persistent camera/microphone. They may be pissed about used game fees, but that won’t stop them sticking to the console series of their choice and it won’t make them abandon their existing gaming networks.

I saw a CoD Ghosts advert on TV during the Champion’s League final. It closed with an XBOne screen, followed by a Microsoft screen. There will be FIFA exclusives. That is how you sell consoles.

And we all know MS will have some things to reveal about GTAV.

  26. ClubCyberia

You can preorder through Blockbuster UK but not Blockbuster US? Also, Blockbuster sells consoles?

    #26 1 year ago
  27. Moonwalker1982

    @27

You seriously think so? Nah man, that was then with the 360. But i’m not sure those time exclusive DLC’s was that much of a profit for Rockstar. However if anything, i’d like MS to announce that GTAV IS coming to Xbox One digitally, so via Games on Demand. Cause i will buy that sucker a second time, no doubt.

Either way…show me great games at E3 MS and you’ll see me pre-ordering too.

    #29 1 year ago
  30. orakaa

@ 26: if BOTH Microsoft AND Sony go this way, then there’s no choice.
I don’t mind if people WANT to have a monitoring device at their home if it’s THEIR choice, if it’s an option.

I want to be able to have option to continue to play if I want to, without those options becoming mandatory.
    This is not being selfish.

    #30 1 year ago
  31. Moonwalker1982

    @31

Not sure i understand what that has to do with GTAV. But i’m with you, i hope MS has something awesome to announce regarding GTAV, but i don’t believe they will. Rockstar hasn’t said a single word about a next-gen version/port.

By the way as for this article….it’s not really fair if you ask me. They barely skimmed gaming content? I can remember 20 or 25 minutes of game content and talk. People may not like that it was CoD of all games, but they showed pure gameplay of that. We got a brand new game announced from Remedy and we’ve seen the first glimpse of that AND Forza 5. On top of that, MS DID say it several times that this event was not about games and that the real game content would be at E3. With that in mind, i think they did fine.

    @33

A lot of people cried about all kinds of things..some understandable, some just ridiculous. We’ll see after E3. If MS brings the big guns, and i think they will, cause we already know about a few first party exclusives..those folks will change their tune.

    #31 1 year ago
  32. Cort

Because MS will throw out a huge amount of promotion for GTAV with an XBox logo on it. Brand promotion is proved to help maintain customer loyalty.

  33. Moonwalker1982

And you mean with the Xbox One logo on it or just in general for 360? The former would be huge :)

  34. Lengendaryboss

    @34
I don’t really think that was too much of a problem, but FIFA and COD are more of the same each year, the reveal of a video game console is not suppose to be centred on gaming? that just screamed backlash. Forza and Remedy’s new IP doesn’t have that same appeal as Halo or GOW which i was hoping to be announced remake or sequel. The fact that the reveal was TV/Kinect eccentric is what turned people off, gaming/new reveals is what turns gamers on, No one say anything about that last sentence, with your dirty minds :D

I’m sure even Wii U beat some launch/pre-order records somewhere and look how that’s turned out.

“At Blockbuster, we have a fantastic array of adrenaline-fueled console games for sale or rental. I can believe this as I know people that wanted to pre-order before all the really negative stuff came out. Most BB’s in my area (US) are closed, but we do have one several milies from me still around.

I pre-ordered my 360 from blockbuster back in the day, though I was annoyed that I had to wait almost a month to get mine after all the employees had got theirs.

  40. Bomba Luigi

Yeah, WiiU did good in Pre-Order, the Problems startet after the Release. And Keep in mind that a lot of People Pre-Order without the Intention of keeping the Console, they want to re-sell it for Profit in the First Days of Release.

It really don’t say a lot, but no – I don’t think Xbox One will sell bad or anything. It will doing fine i guess, but this Pre-Order Number are just no Sign of how good or bad the Console will do.

XBox One shattered pre-order records! ….

    at Blockbuster!!!!!!

Yeah, I’ll start worrying about the intellect of humanity and possible unspoken footnotes when it’s somewhere that actually matters for numbers. Plus, this is Blockbuster in the UK, and UK people make no sense as we’ve seen with several of the games they support.

    #41 1 year ago
  42. Rikki

People are dumb, why pre-order something that doesn’t even have a price yet? Or as of now, there is very little games announced? Pre-ordering is dumb in general.

Also, Blockbuster is still a thing?

    #42 1 year ago
  43. drewbles82

From what i gather people want backwards comp, people want to be able to use used games freely, people dont want it always on even if its every 24hrs etc
So why on earth are people buying this box for? We are the customers, if we dont buy, then it will force them to reconsider, we have the power here, yet we dont use it.
I dont get how they can it will be the only box, you’ll need.
    Bollocks
Anyone here planning to play GTA5, you’ll need your xbox. Anyone planning to buy a lot of games, that 500gb harddrive will fill up quick so you’ll external ones.
Dont forget to plug in your cable box as well.

People who want the PS4 to be DRM free started a twitter campaign and its been noticed, why do xbox owners just take this rubbish.

    #43 1 year ago
  44. Richenbaum

@46 you’re overestimating the relevancy of a twitter “campaign” over an issue that Sony very well may not have been planning to implement in the first place or just as easily could still go ahead and do anyway. the fact that it’s been “noticed” doesn’t mean it’s accomplishing anything. hence Sony only giving vague noncommittal answers on the subject still.

you’re also assuming that everyone cares about the same things you do. a lot of people don’t care about used games and always-on. it’s just not that big a deal for a lot of people.

but sure just convince millions of people to all agree to not buy it in protest and microsoft will bow to our internet demands and start all over. might happen.

    #44 1 year ago
  45. nollie4545

DRM has been part of the PC world for years.

    My PC is always online.

The moment MS show an advert showing the Kinect sensor turning on and playing games etc when being spoken to or with a hand gesture, the Xbox will sell like donuts at a fat camp.

The nay-sayers are just moaning fecks who no one will listen to anyway. I bet most of them buy/order the bloody thing in the end.

Sony are on their way down in their respective industries. I don’t think there will be another Play Station after this one, there might not even be a Sony around. It might be a Samsung Playstation or similar.

I know what you’re getting at is that you know one company’s policy and that may be indicative of what Blockbuster is doing, but here we have an actual company’s name and even a specific region being represented, meaning you can look up their policies on that sort of thing. Also, that we’re talking about policy in dealing with consumers that you would expect to be disclosed to consumers, rather than behind-the-scenes policies that would never leave their offices.

Game trailers G-Keighley has said many times, stuff like the always on, used games can be changed by software anyway so even if sales were bad and they find its not working, they can change it with an update. I dont know tech myself but if thats true, i might wait and see.
to me, ive not been impressed though, game wise, wow better graphics, perfectly happy with what i got at the moment, to me its all about gameplay, storyline etc

@56: I assumed you were speaking from knowledge or experience that Gamestop has some kind of punishment likely in the form of fees and spanking was a joking exaggeration of the actual problem, yes.

@59: Apparently record-breaking numbers of people! Yeah, I really don’t get how Blockbuster, and only one region of it so far at that, selling record numbers of a console is something to get crazy about. If this was Amazon or Gamestop then I’d take the numbers seriously. Also, didn’t a big retailer over in the UK recently shut down? If so, Blockbuster getting record preorders is even less relevant. It’s just the equivalent of a clothing shop with hardly any customers suddenly getting a handful more with the closing of a big store.
