Xbox One: Microsoft aims for 1 billion lifetime sales, 100 million Xbox 360 units

Friday, 24th May 2013 11:22 GMT By Dave Cook

Microsoft’s senior vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business Yusuf Mehdi has stated that given the broad multimedia focus of Xbox One, there’s no reason why it can’t shift between 400 million and 1 billion consoles in its lifetime. He said the company is also angling for 100 million Xbox 360 console sales in the next five years.

Speaking with OXM, Mehdi said of Microsoft’s hopes for Xbox 360, “We believe over the next five years we can break a 100 million unit installed base. That’s something we’re shooting for, it’s not a financial plan as such, it’s just rough numbers if you will.

“To sell another 25 million, half of those will probably come from replacements, but half will come from new buyers. And the way we’ll break into those segments is by hitting new price points, getting new classes of entertainment to come with the Xbox, and breaking into new customer segments. So you’ll see the Xbox 360 continue to exist, even as we launch the next generation Xbox One.”

On the subject of Xbox One sales and the growth of the market with the herald of next-gen formats, Mehdi continued, “Every generation, as you’ve probably heard, has grown approximately 30%. So this generation is about 300 million units. Most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400 million units. That’s if it’s a game console, over the next decade.

“We think you can go broader than a game console, that’s our aim, and you can go from 400 million to potentially upwards of a billion units. That’s how we’re thinking of the Xbox opportunity as we go forward.”

That’s a lofty goal, but how do you think recent chat about £35 pre-owned fees and Kinect DRM might impact Microsoft’s chances? Let us know what you think below.

    He has to be joking.

And I think he is referring to total console sales for 8th gen, not only Xbone.

I’m not sure whether to take this as some potent corporate bullshit or the ravings of a genuine lunatic.

A billion? Really? What planet is Mehdi referring to?

  7. Jet Black

400million to 1Billion… Christ, that’s optimistic & completely unrealistic. Microsoft just keep on digging that hole with the Xbox One…

Well, based on their reveal, they appear to be aiming to sell to everyone with a TV – which is a larger market than ‘just’ gamers.

Still, a billion. That’s a big number. What other consumer electronic devices have moved that sort of number? (Not a rhetorical question!)

So basically they say 1 of every 7 people in the world will buy the XBO, well, 5 o this 7 has no water or electricity, and the other 2 includes people for every age, not interested in videogames, users of other systems, etc…

Good luck, Sony of 2006… ehhh… Microsoft.

You people don’t get it a single xbox one got a one year lifetime so be prepared to replace it 7 times in 7 years thus them selling a billion Units … I bet they will put addictive stuff in there just watch you will want to buy an xbox one no matter what

    #26 2 years ago
  27. orakaa

@ 24: I think I just got it! The consoles will have multiple RROD, so they will need to be bought at least 5 times!

Seriously, they are so arrogant… I really hope XBone will flop. Hard.

    #27 2 years ago
  28. The_Red

Did they just have brain transplant with Sony from 2006? Seriously, even IF their system is THE best multimedia / SmartTV device, they won’t be able to get past 200 million… And that is if this is the next VHS player or Walkman from MS.

Removing the TV crap and looking at it as a games console, those numbers will have a hard time reaching 100 million. Seriously WTF?

    #28 2 years ago
  29. Sylrissa

Hopefully this flop will give Microsoft the same wake up call that has caused Sony to wake up to it’s own 2006 arrogance.

MS is suffering from that 3rd console curse.

  30. Bomba Luigi

So… that means that everything below 400 Mio. Sales makes the Xbox1 a Flop? Good Luck with that.

Are they really serious? Is there nobody at MS with a bit of Brain and not on Drugs left?

This sounds realistic. The Xbox One is not only for gamers but for a broader audience, and I’m sure it will attract many non-gamers.

He’s talking about all next-gen consoles combined, not just XB1…

You might want to consider editing the headline and the news. ;)

It took Pos about ten years to reach 100 million, why would it be an issue for something as successful as X360.

“We think you can go broader than a game console”

Yusuf, dear, you can paint it pink, call it XUnicorn and have it cook delicious rainbow toasts for breakfast but a game console is always going to be just a game console.

If you go by console reveals alone then M$ has no chance. E3 will be fun.

    #40 2 years ago
  41. Cort

    Da Man,

Not very successful if it is on track to sell fewer than the original PlayStation and finishes third in its generation, millions and millions behind a console which has always been more expensive. 360 hasn’t got a hope in hell of selling 100 million, even with the help of a couple of million retail-replaced RRoDs.
