Microsoft working with “partners to support the second hand market,” says Mattrick

Due to yesterday’s confusion surrounding how often Xbox One requires users to connect to the Internet, and whether used games will indeed be supported the way we’re used to, Microsoft’s president of interactive entertainment, Don Mattrick, has tried to alleviate some of the misconceptions surrounding the firm’s new all-in-one device.

Speaking with the BBC, Mattrick wouldn’t go into specifics regarding Microsoft’s stance on the used game trade, but he did say will be working with its “partners to support the second hand market.”

“It isn’t going to require an always connected state to the Internet, but we believe in the power of the net; we believe in multiplayer gaming and the devices we all take for granted which do require some sort of communication through the Internet,” said Mattrick. “That’s the palate, that’s the base we’ve created with Xbox One.

“We are going to be working with our partners to support the second hand market, and there will be more details unveiled on that in the coming weeks. We love games, that’s what we do and what I’ve done for the last 30 years. We announced some of the biggest partnerships in gaming history: Call of Duty, FIFA.

“People spend countless hours playing those products and we are going to continue to build out our business; we’ve got the biggest line-up of exclusives being built by our studio ever in the history of Xbox, and we have the most third-party support from creators around the globe such as Electronic Arts.

“It’s a great line-up and people are going to get the chance to see more of our games at E3.”

Mattrick said Xbox One is “an unrivaled device,” which competes not only with Sony and Nintendo, but with Apple, Google and other companies that are consumer electronics based.

“We have raised the bar. We are going to bring people the things that they love: the best in gaming, and the best in entertainment with a device that is easy, and simple to use,” he said.

    Is this really a good Idea? You want to fight just everybody at the same Time with one Device, and while doing this you loose Fokus on things because you want to do everything. That some great fighting spirit, but it will maybe not end good.

    Sounds hazy, definately a round of damage control. Everything points right now to that preowned games will be more expensive than new games, which will kill the preowned market.

    My only concern is if Sony follows suit; they have said that preowned will work on PS4 but the same goes for Xbox One games – it’s just not attractive to buy a preowned one under those conditions, and since EA happily have abandoned online pass’es, this could suggest that Sony is doing something similar. I mean, remember the memory cards for the Vita. That info only showed up at GamesCom in August 2011, four months before lauch in Japan.

    They really are in a parallel world at this stage.
    Just to take the timed dlc bull for a minute.
    What bloody difference does it make?
    If I play on 1 i get it a few weeks early if I play on 4 I wait a bit as does others on the 4.
    I mean do they really think things like this influence peoples console choice.

    Seriously, they REPORTED the whole reveal event for an additional month… for this? I’ve never seen so many PR mistakes. The worst that could have happened would have been a simple screen saying “Screw you and give us your money”. At least it would have been more honest.

    This whole used game trade-in issue doesn’t really affect me as it seems I keep most of the games I purchase (good games and sets of games) and by the time I consider getting rid of them they are worth nothing as a trade-in. Along that line I hold no sympathy for companies like GameStop who offer too little for trade-in value and charge too much for used games often neglecting to make it clear the games require the purchase of an online pass.

    Also, I suppose I’ve become accustom to purchasing games, DLC, and music online knowing that such content is non-transferrable and much of the content. If this offers a way to re-sell downloaded games and maybe eliminate/morph online passes into a better and workable solution I’ll be onboard.

    With that said it sounds to me like MS has a viable second hand market solution that is being finalized and can’t speak of the details until all parties are on the same page, perhaps contractually. I suppose I’ll just have to be patient and wait until E3 or until they do a press release.

    Are we going to see a resurgent Sony this gen?

    If they manage to capitalise on Microsoft’s misstep and don’t make their own then I think it’s possible. Xbox isn’t going away though, not unless they severely screw up marketing or price, or have an RROD level defect.

    @13, I too am of the same mindset as you. i never purchase used games so in reality this doesn’t affect me. but it is a matter of principle.

    I wish they would just end this crap. It would be soooooo simple.

    ‘if you buy a game, used or not, as long as you have the disk you can play it on your account. if you buy it digitally it will only play on your account.’

    There done. Or ‘if you buy a used game you need to purchase a license to play that game on your account’

    How freaking hard is that???

    @ Wowtgp… U are a slow ass person. Please tell me in which way does the new Xbox seem greedy? Greedy is making u buy everything to make something complete. They are simply giving the people everything all in one. They clearly said e3 will be all about games. I choose the Xbox over the ps4. Ps4 showed good stuff but nothing spectacular. It was all about “sharing”. They are all about games right? But they pretty much only showed their same IPs that contain none to shitty multi. It’s crazy that people are talking shit. When they don’t have certain features in their console they get mad cuz they want more. When they get it…all of a sudden it’s a box that does everything but games?? SMH

    There’s no “confusion” here, except that which PR professionals are trying to create to avoid a boycott while not making any hard promises.

    And whatever they say now, rest assured it’ll be changed to the worst case scenario in a year or two, once people have bought the system. It’s as simple as flipping a switch, and they’re just trying to push back expectations.

    Don’t believe that? Three months ago, this was an always-connected-to-work system. Media and MS employees weren’t just pulling that out of their expletives. Now it’s a connected “sometimes” to work system. How often? It’s not a secret. They’re not lying: they literally don’t know. They don’t know because they haven’t settled on a period of time yet. They haven’t settled on a period of time yet because it’s only been a couple of months since they backed off from always-on.

    Sony dodged answering this same question last March, but hinted they may do the same thing as Microsoft on the PS4. With all the complaining publishers did this gen about not profiting from used games, it’s not surprising such a system has been implemented.

    Publishers pushed for this, and it seems highly unlikely that the Xbox One will charge a fee, and Sony with their PS4 won’t. Because if that was the case, who would want to release games for the PS4, when there is a lot more money to be made on the Xbox One?

    Instead of trashing Microsoft, (fanboys of the PS4), you better hope Sony does the same thing. Otherwise, your PS4 will suffer from a lack of games, and propel the Xbox One in the #1 position, regardless of how people feel about the used game fee. People will go where the games are, and publishers will go where the money is.

    While this move is disliked by me as well, this system will make the Xbox One a lot more profitable for software companies, if Sony chooses not to follow suit. The Xbox One will have more games, and more exclusives, while the PS4 would suffer from a lack of games; similar to the Vita. Sony will follow with the same plan to charge fees for used games, or they’ll get beaten not long after the next generation starts.

    It’s just a sign of the times, while the consumer gets screwed over. The only possible up side to it, is this system may prevent the cost of new games to increase; the used game fee, is their way of increasing software costs while not increasing the new game fee. But, if we get double dunked with this used game fee and higher costs for new games, then don’t expect next-gen to be as successful as this gen; which that reality would also give Nintendo a good chance to recover with the Wii U as well.

    Let’s hope that when E3 arrives, gaming journalists will ask all the right questions when it comes to online requirements, as well as the situation with used games, for Xbox One and the PS4. Sony isn’t in the clear yet, so we’ll soon see what they’re hiding, and what else Microsoft has in store for the market.

    I don’t believe Microsoft will go through with the always on or even be the need to be connected. It’s obviously built as a online system. You get more out of it much like the ps3/360. BUT i can see them leaving the used games fee up to the publishers since it is their $ that they have been complaining about. Either way I’m excited for this new generation. I just wish that both companies would be upfront about all the details.
