Unity mobile development tools free to indies & small studios

Unity Technologies is giving away its basic mobile development tools to independent and small studios, as part of its drive to democratise the development process.

In a press release sent to VG247 this morning, Unity confirmed that from today the indie scene can publish any game or app built using the free tools directly to iOS or Android, and that Blackberry and Windows Phone 8 support will be added down the line at no extra cost.

The price of Unity's mobile tools add-on was $800, and the free software can be used without having to pay a penny or share revenue with the company at all.

David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies said, “We were able to make Unity free for the web and for desktop computers a while ago, but have been dreaming of doing the same for mobile for what seems like forever.

"Mobile games development is possibly the most dynamic and exciting industry in the world, and it’s an honor to be able to help so many developers be so successful in fulfilling their visions and in building their businesses.”
