Metal Gear Rising didn’t launch on Xbox 360 in Japan due to console’s weak performance

Monday, 20th May 2013 12:31 GMT By Dave Cook

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance didn’t launch on Xbox 360 in Japan because of the console’s poor performance in the country, Kojima Productions producer Yuji Korekado has explained.

Korekado explained the decision as part of a recent HideoBlog podcast, where he said, “Around last year, Xbox 360 sales didn’t really grow [in Japan]“, then Kojima himself added, “‘Bwah?’ I thought [after seeing the projected figures], and if we did release that [number in Japan], there was talk that it would be rough on the brand.”

It’s no secret that Microsoft’s rig consistently suffers small sales each week in Japan, but would the game’s release on Xbox 360 really have hurt the Metal Gear brand as Kojima suggested? Let us know below.

Thanks Kotaku and Polygon.

Considering that Metal Gear Rising is pretty much a spin-off I don’t think it would have hurt the Metal Gear brand at all.

If true doesn’t bode well for the next Xbox in Japan.

I presume this means Kojima, etc. believe the 360 and Xbox is actually a negative brand now – i.e. not a great one to be associated with – rather than just a weak brand.

Seems odd – but I do remember reading about a bit of a backlash in Japan when it turned out the supposed JRPG exclusives were just timed on 360 so maybe there’s something to it.

Not that it would matter much either way – the title wouldn’t sell much in Japan on 360. Thinking about it maybe that’s what they were worried about – low sales being perceived at dropping interest int he Metal Gear franchise. Seems unlikely to me though if that’s the case – surely most local gamers would just see the low sales as indicative of 360 and nothing directly to do with the MG brand?

The game is trash anyway. . So who really loses.. no one was going to buy it anyway. People who got it here in the states either didn’t have Xbox live to try out the demo or thought it was a new real metal gear game. They still traded the trash to gamestop the next day. A waste of programing

@3 The next XBOX is DOA in Japan. Microsoft won’t even try to capture the audience there. They just pray upon the Westerners who are stupid enough to buy their console.

Common knowledge really although i thought Kojima and Co already stated why it isn’t on Xbox360.

@Dave how come you keep referring to consoles as “rigs”?
