Gran Turismo 6 out this holiday on PS3, demo lands in July

Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:43 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Kazunori Yamauchi has announced Gran Turismo 6 is in development and will be releases this holiday season on PS3. A demo will be released in July to coincide with the launch of the new GT Academy season.

Announced during the game’s 15th anniversary event, Yamauchi said the game’s engine has been “renewed, we’ll be cleaning it up, making it smoother for the future.” He noted the rendering engine specifically has been revamped.

The Physics Engine is revamped, it contains a new suspension system, tire and aerodynamics modelling has been reworked as well. A variety of “Edge Effects”, the chemical reactions between the real world and the virtual world, are also planned for GT6.

Also, collaborations between various automotive manufacturers and brands crossing different industries will be revealed gradually across the next six months.

Silverstone Circuit will be just one of seven new locations in Gran Turismo 6, taking the total to 33, with 71 different layouts available, 19 of them brand new. There will also be regular additions of new tracks set to be made available online. The game will also contian 200 more cars than GT5, with 1200 available at release and more available after launch.

It will have new tracks released every month as DLC.

Cars featured during the GT6 Silverstone demo include the following – asterisk denotes a care new to the series:

  • Acura NSX ’91
  • Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale ’11*
  • Alpine A110 1600S ’68

  • Nissan Leaf G (GT Academy Version)
  • Tesla Motors Model S Signature Performance ’12*

Players will be able to create their own racing series and championships to compete online and they will have more control over online events. This will all be accomplished using new course maker features, and scenery can be expanded several tens of square miles.

“It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo,” explained Kazunori Yamauchi, during the announcement at Silverstone Circuit. “Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream.

“We’re pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments. I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6.

“The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo.”

    While I am not a fan of the series (or any driving game, for that matter), I am pleased to see Sony are still going to continue to support the PS3, even after the PS4 is out. I see so many people who act like Sony is just going to cut off the PSN and stop selling anything PS3 the day that 4 launches. It’s nice to know that, for those of us who won’t be upgrading for a couple years, we’re still going to be supported.

    @2

    But what’s the ‘cut off’ point?

    Without b/c I can’t see me having my PS3 Phat AND PS4 under my TV at the same time…

    Same with 360 / 720 before anyone says I’m slagging off the PS4…

    I really think titles like this should have a dual release.

    #3 2 years ago
  4. Clupula

    @3 – I would like them to support the PS3 at least until sometime in 2015. Two years is a good grace period.

    They said they’ll be working on bringing backwards compatibility to the PS4 and if it was just something like having to rebuy and download/stream PS3 games, I don’t see why that’d be something they’d need to work on. The PS3 already does that with PS2 games. It can’t be that hard. Actually backwards compatibility, I can see that taking some time.

    So, let them figure it out for the next couple years and I’ll stick with my PS3 until there’s 20 good exclusives for the PS4.

    @Clupula,
    Agreed. And since they are perfectionists, they concentrate on one platform, master it, and then move on.

    However, PS3 decision is mostly due to, as I mentioned above, since they are fucking perfectionists. GT 6 work started in 2010, soon after GT5, so its not surprising.

    Something which makes Sony platforms leading gaming ones for me, unlike their competitors who abandon their old platforms as soon as their new one arrives.

    Sony is doing a good job supporting PS3 owners. I think Sony still wants to make money off the system well after the PS4 is here.

    Not everybody is going to run out and buy a PS4 in the first year. Most new consoles have a slow adoption rate.

    This is good for Sony and Gran Turismo fans. They don’t have to buy a new console just to play their favorite game. The sales of this game will help fun a massive PS4 GT too.

    If its any indication Sony still supported the PS2 until recently. So you don’t need to worry about the PS3 bud… Just saying that’s all.
    I love the way people make a big fuss about b/c almost like your gaming seasion cant survive without it, keep your damn PS3 if that’s the case.

    Not rocket science really is it.

    Actually is good to know Sony is supporting PS3, but is also true Sony could win big if they launched a PS4 version.

    Like it or hate it, Gran Turismo is a game that sells systems.

    More customization!? Praise the lords of GT! :D

    #18 2 years ago
  19. fihar

    The funny thing is, I fully expected GT6 to be simply a revamped, more polished version of GT5 with more cars and tracks.
    Kazunori being Kazunori, he announced that there’s going to be an all-new game engine and physics engine.
    I would be fine with simply more customizations, more online options, and better UI, but they’ve just completely blown away my expectations by actually giving us a new game.

    Of course, judging by the exorbitant amount of cars in the game, Standard cars will still be there. Let’s just hope Kazunori made the right choices this time.

    Sony is definitely going all-out with giving the PS3 a proper send-off aren’t they? This was a console that gave them a big financial loss at the beginning, and now they’re going head over heels in giving the PS3 a glorious twilight years before the PS4 joins the party.

    @15
    This was just a taster I believe, something to give the fans in conjunction with the 15th Anniversary.
    The E3 reveal will definitely be much bigger than this.

    @17
    You also won’t find exotic machines like the Red Bull X2010 and the Citroen by GT in Forza.
    This is what makes GT so eccentric. Like the amazing opening video for GT5, PD sees car as more than just things you drive around and race with. Forza is a great game, but unlike GT, it lacks soul.

    @23
    For once, I actually agree with you. Never saw the appeal to Forza. The physics are AWFUL, the car list pretty much copy/pasted from GT5. Having that rewind featured made that already easy game a complete breeze if you used it.

    And people seem to forget they made a patch that lets you look in ALL 1,000+ car models in the game, premium and standard. Forza will never be better than Gran Turismo.

    I’ll take Drive Club, thank you very much.

  30. monkeygourmet

    Theres no point in ragging on Forza.

    This gen it’s made so much ground on GT it’s unreal. Even for big fans, there was a lot of problems with GT5.

    Forza has been going from strength to strength. Especially from an online perspective, ultimatly, ‘Drive club’ on PS4 looks to be copying the design template Forza has set.

    Obviously GT has a huge fanbase who will buy the game anyway, as proved with GT5. Just go on any forum after launch and there are plenty of people pissed off with some of the design choices and AI in GT5.

    Im guessing GT6 will be a more accurte interpretation of how PD imagined GT5, the problem being it’s taken the whole space of a consoles life cycle to get there.

    The Forza teams only fuck up so far has been Forza Horizen IMO. That was starting to get a bit too Micro Transaction happy for me, and I hope that doesn’t repeat with Forza 5. Racing games are prime MT territory though, so I haven’t got high hopes in that respect.

    To me, the dev time for GT5 compared to the finished product was a bit of a joke. The PD team have no one ‘reeling them in’, although I bet they had a shit load of fun at track days doing ‘research’. Obviously if the finished project is a masterpiece, all is forgiven, but a crazy long dev cycle rarely works.

    By the time the product was released, Forza had already made up a lot of ground and was doing a lot of things better the GT.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. RocknRolla

    I do not need 1200 cars if 1000 of them will be stupiid low res looking standard cars like in GT 5 wich was very very annoying, if this is the case with GT 6 it is a deffinete no buy for me :(

    #31 2 years ago
  32. Belmont

    I agree that GT5 certainly had a very long development,but Splinter Cell conviction had almost the same time with around 5 years. That was a 10 hour cliche run of US national Security blah blah…
    Another point with GT is its actual success. 10 million copies is certainly big for a simulator racing game exclusive to PS3. AC3 has sold 12 million and it was on every major platform.

    #32 2 years ago
  33. CaptPierce

    @32
    They upped the res with a patch and made it so you can look inside of ALL the cars now though. :P
