RIFT free-to-play option launching in June

Trion Worlds has announced that RIFT will have a free-to-play launch in June, and will sport a hybrid model similar to other MMOs.

Trion said in the press release players will be able to experience the entire game world; every dungeon, every zone, and every level and get full access to all current and future game updates.

“We have been listening to feedback from our players and watching the continuously developing MMO community, and are now ready to launch RIFT as a premium free-to-play experience,” said Bill Fisher, creative director. “After taking our time and planning a careful transition; we are very excited to bring an enhanced game experience to everyone, without barriers.”

All players will be able to explore the entire world of Telara for free and will have access to the expanded in-game RIFT Store where a variety of services such as : mounts, boosts, wardrobe items, and more.

An optional subscription will still be available that grants a slew of “Patron” benefits and bonuses. Trion will celebrate its current and previous subscribers with loyalty and currency rewards for their time spent playing RIFT thus far.

RIFT free-to-play will kick off with content update 2.3, Empyreal Assault, which will open up a new zone, world event, chronicle and much more.

The free-to-play option and update 2.3 goes live June 12.

    It was only a matter of time before this went F2P. From what I’ve gathered and been told by my friends who play it, the server populations have been dropping.

    I’m just a bit surprised they didn’t go F2P sooner..

    They didn’t go sooner because they didn’t have to. The xpac was released 7 months ago and nothing has really happened since (from a PR point of view), so it seems they were focusing on this (and Defiance).

    F2P is a ripoff unless all I have to spend is $10-15 a month (the regular sub price) to enjoy the game as much as a sub.

    The key item in the post was ‘boosts’. As along as I would get them in my subscription I’m cool with F2P BUT if I have to pay money (or, grind like crazy) on top of the subscription to get them then it’s a cash grab.

    Rift is the best MMO out so this is a bit disappointing. I always thought the paywall was a barrier to the lesser elements of MMO players.

    I’m getting a bit disillusioned around F2P after experiencing it in Neverwinter (which is a great game but the prices are outrageous). If Trion tries to charge $40 for a mount or $6 for a respec then F2P will soon die because they all got greedy. Maybe it will be like LOTRO, I read where that is a good hybrid model but not sure.

    F2P usually means you have to spend a lot more than the sub price to enjoy the game. Maybe they will be different but the video doesn’t really say anything other than you get no paid power. That is great but if I have to spend $30 or $40 a month to get the same experience as a sub then why waste all of the time building this P2E model rather than generating more content (which people will pay a $10 or $15 sub for)?

    I guess the answer is there is a subset of players that think P2E at $15/month is cheaper than subbing at $10/month. Or, their analysis shows a subset of players willing to pay A LOT more than $15/month on items and that offsets those who actually play for free and never buy anything. Would be interesting to see how many P2E players don’t spend a dime (and it truly is F2P…but nothign in life is free).

    Free to play needs to stop, it’s NOT what MMO’s need. Every F2P MMO lack content, and is either pay to win or just forcing you to buy essential stuff like bag space or action bars.

    Every game need to go the GW2 route or stick with subscriptions, period.

    I am getting worried at the rise of the multi-tier MMO game. Having those who sub and pay some extras for vanity(such as the case with SWTOR charging almost £6 just to change your fucking face) and those who see F2P as a tool to increase player base(which is does) and generate extra dollar.

    Developers are missing the point totally. Having both is just taking the piss. If they looked at the real reasons why people leave a subs based MMO – its either because they dont see any value for their money, or they move on to something else in real life.

    I just wish more would adopt the League of Legends approach with a free game and MTS thrown in for good measure. Having said that, Rift is an excellent game albeit a clone of WoW but not only has superb customer service, regular updates etc but offers lots to a players but if they just reduced the sub instead of going F2P ppl may come back
