Also I invite you to think if you remember the names from the directors of Infinity Ward, Eidos Montreal, Sucker Punch, Bungie and Assassin’s Creed 3.

  10. SameeR_Fisher

Patrick, Jade isn’t really a Legend, there is alot of confusion going on, let’s clear some stuff up, Jade was Producer on AC1 & Executive Producer on ACII.

A Producer is more like the liaison between the publisher and the studio, he/she would do all they could to back the game in front of publisher, to get the financials needed, to defend the creative vision, but their contributions to the game development itself is minimum as far as I know.

If anyone would be Assassin’s Creed Legend, then that would be Patrice Desilets, since he was the creative director behind these titles.

  13. silkvg247

Meh – compare this kind of feedback to the comments you’d get on some big dude’s career interview – like Notch.

You’d probably mock his beard, say you loved or hated him, backed up with some form of reasoning, you wouldn’t question him having a title of legend, and might even idolise him.

You wouldn’t talk about how sexy he is, discuss how he looks better in photoshop pics, call him a trophy or automatically think he got where he is from what’s between his legs.

Tell me again sexism is a myth. Every time I see an article about women (not just on this site) it’s the same stench. Sickens me a bit tbh.

    ^This. 100%.

I’m at least happy people are saying good things about her, rather than wanting to bone her silly 24/7 though. Looking good isn’t something people can help. :P

But I do agree, it sucks sexism is still pretty open in the games industry like that.

I think it’s scary to hear the people behind Assassins Creed admit to actually taking it seriously.

It just kinda blows your mind. (Presumably) intelligent people sat down and wrote that crap, and somehow agreed that it was good…

It’s frightening. I respect Désilets for getting out when he did.

    #19 2 years ago
  20. DSB

@20 The original wasn’t exactly crap, it just felt like a tech demo that could become awesome some day.

AC II was just very awkward for me. I enjoyed the first 10 hours or so, and then I spent another 10 hours just grinding through the same repetitive gameplay. Which really took away from the otherwise good beginning.

Gameplay is gameplay, I’m sure some people will like to do it over and over again, but the story is just beyond stupid though. It’s irredeemably bad.

I hate myself for buying ACIII. I figured the setting was truly interesting, and somehow I believed that Ubisoft were capable of doing something new. That’s entirely on me.

  24. salarta

She looks a lot skinnier than she used to, and I don’t think it’s for the better. I’m a little concerned about if her health is affected at all.

I think the remarks concerning Jade Raymond have a lot to do with how in many respects during the original Assassin’s Creed release, it came off like she was being put up front and center to promote the game due to being an attractive woman. You don’t see such remarks about Kim Swift from making Portal, because while she was behind Portal and most people that care about video games know who she is, there was never this huge emphasis about her physical appearance or her gender. It was all about her actual credentials, and when it came time to advertise her next big game at Airtight Games, it was her credentials as the person behind Portal that got the most focus, not how attractive she is or is not. Whether this is the fault of Ubisoft themselves or the fault of game press going out of their way to emphasize her physical features, there was a definite perception at the time that her looks and gender were the focus.

Personally, I think some of the backlash toward Jade was an instinctive but unspoken fear that video games could become something of a sideshow. I think some people deep down thought that if they didn’t bash her after seeing what they perceived to be a marketing campaign heavily focused on her being an attractive woman, the video game culture would change from being about the games to being about the zany or attractive celebrity figures that make them. We were in a time when a LOT of the culture was about fetishizing the concept of female gamers. To an extent, I believe we still are, because it seems like some projects that would have been demolished by public opinion if a man did them got a pass because a woman was the one behind it. But the fetishization of it is a bit different, not so severe and a lot more positive in nature. Before, it was “seeing women play games is hot because they’re hot and doing something I like,” while today it’s more “seeing women play games is great for the industry because there’s more equality and variety.”

Most commenters on here seem to be straight males, commenting on another guy being “sexy” is highly unlikely and quite a poor comparison.
You’d really need a site where the majority of commenters were straight women and then have a physically appealing male thrown in their faces. There’s a reason the Twilight movies didn’t have Bobby Kotick and Gabe Newell in the male roles, acting ability has little to do with it.

The only person talking about Jade using her body to get where she is would be yourself. It’s interesting that you assume guys think women are incapable of attaining a high position through competence and hard work. It’s you that’s thinking those things, not me.
Well done for proving that you’re just as narrow minded as those you’re against. Stereotyping ftw, it would seem.

Most articles I see about women, that have women commenting, are full of hatred and bile from women, go to nearly any site that talks about celebs, it’s disturbing. That’s just the way the internet is, lots of angry and bitter people.

Quite how being sexually attracted to a member of the opposite sex is considered sexist is beyond me, the comments are immature but not sexist. Maybe some people need to go check a dictionary and read the definition.

@28: This again, really? She looks great, people point that out. I don’t see the point of it either, so I simply ignore it. Why does it bother you that much? Because they don’t point out what she did? Maybe they don’t know? Maybe they don’t care?

The same people would probably ignore the entire story if it was a man.

    @14: *sigh*

“Meh – compare this kind of feedback to the comments you’d get on some big dude’s career interview – like Notch.”

Oh, please do. Go back, read the interviews, I’m pretty sure you’ll find ONLY positive comments about Notch.

“You’d probably mock his beard, say you loved or hated him, backed up with some form of reasoning, you wouldn’t question him having a title of legend, and might even idolise him.”

How about we start with his weight? Lawl. That dude’s soooo fat. A legend, really? Give me a break. For all we know he’s could be a one-hit wonder. He only made Minecraft.

He developed it because he’s a lonely loser. Probably had no friends when he was a child, which is why he played with LEGO all by himself. Which is essentially what Minecraft is. LEGO for poor people with too much time on their hand.

    This was a demonstration.

I have absolutely nothing against Notch. I do not care about his game, nor about him as a person. All the troll-ish things I wrote, I saw on other boards. Don’t be ridiculous. Just because Trolls don’t attack him on his gender alone, doesn’t mean he is not being attacked. Why is this the only thing you care about?

Besides, Jade is a producer, not a developer per se. Name me one famous male producer.

“You wouldn’t talk about how sexy he is, discuss how he looks better in photoshop pics, call him a trophy or automatically think he got where he is from what’s between his legs.”

… because he isn’t sexy. But I bet he’s a favorite inside the Bear-Community. Someone like Ken Levine though … yep, definitely a handsome man and yes, I saw comments – especially on Youtube – mention exactly that. Multiple times. Outrageous.

“Tell me again sexism is a myth. Every time I see an article about women (not just on this site) it’s the same stench. Sickens me a bit tbh”

I guess you only see what you want to see. Yeah, men never get attacked on the internet and if they are, it’s not because of their gender, so it’s not serious, it’s not important.

    #33 2 years ago
  34. salarta

@33: Well, Pat IS thinking about advertising the site in a bikini.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. zinc

@34, So you want to see men on the internet attacked because of their gender before you take sexism seriously ?

Dude, your never gonna get it.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. YoungZer0

    @36: Stop talking to yourself.

And way to miss my point, dude.

Where exactly did I say that I don’t take sexism seriously? What I’m never gonna get is how a comment like “Jade Raymond is hot, I want to marry her!” can be seen as sexist.

What I’m never gonna get is how people like you and silk seem to purposefully ignore negative comments that are being made towards male developers/producers (watch a video with Gabe in it, how many comments are about him being fat?), just so they keep believing in the ignorant idea that only female developers are being trolled.

Just recently I re-watched the Silent Hill: Book of Memories trailer and it was insane how many people directly attacked the guy in the video, mostly made fun of him being bald.

And let’s not forget Tameem Antoniades who had to endure an insane amount of trolling and even death threats.

But hey, keep focusing on the smallest picture possible.

Enjoy the GTFO documentary (If it ever comes out), that ignores the bigger problem, so long as it feeds your ideology.

  37. Bill_E_Talent

Jade Raymond did willingly pose for Maxim Magazine years ago. I think she chose to elevate her status using her sexuality, at least that’s the way I perceive a move like that.

  38. zinc

    @37, Thanks :)

Anyway i do think you take sexism seriously, but only in how it affects men. Which is cute :)

Oh & fat & bald jokes?

I’m a solar powered sex machine with plenty for your momma to hang on to!

    Thats a mans response :;)

    #38 2 years ago
  39. YoungZer0

@39: What makes you say that? And no. I’m just not one of the many people who quickly jump on the bandwagon to scream “sexism!” simply because someone got insulted.

If someone writes “Jade fucking sucks!” that’s not sexist. If someone writes “Jade fucking sucks, like all women!” that is sexist.

If someone writes “Tameem fucking sucks!” that’s not sexist. If someone writes “Tameem fucking sucks, like all men!” that is sexist.

Why that is so hard for most people to distinguish, I don’t know.

“I’m a solar powered sex machine with plenty for your momma to hang on to!

    Thats a mans response :;)”

Sounds like a comment from someone who’s troubled by insecurity.

The point is that sexysm is in the “eye of the beholder”.
And I think that all the people seeing sexysm everywhere are hypocrites.
I don’t see where’s the problem in saying that a woman is beautiful.
If you guys are scared to say that a woman is beautiful, you’re 100% idiots.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. silkvg247

@Young.. I don’t think you actually understand what sexism is, you seem to confuse it with sweeping generalizations or trolling.

It’s also pertinently clear that you have no idea who I am, but from your ranting I can only assume you’ve portrayed me as of those batshit crazy feminists you see on youtube.

I’m not. I’ve merely pointed out that (prior to this discussion) we were getting comments weighted towards her like she was eye candy and nothing more. I find it disrespectful and disappointing, but I’m not going to take up arms and march for femininity over it – nor go all ranty like you have.

Your example of Gabe is interesting – yes he’ll get fat comments, yes he’ll get trolled – never said he wouldn’t. But people have respect for him all the same – and you’d get at least some comments that were relevant to the topic rather than his appearance.. here I see what.. a whole one, in the first thirteen.

Now.. imagine if Jade here was a tubby one, or ugly. Christ, the comments would be nightmarish.. it’d be Gabe fat jokes times a billion. I can’t prove that, but the sad thing is I just know it to be true. It’s probably why you don’t see *any* fat / not so attractive women in the gaming public eye – they’re likely hiding away because they know they’d get limitless grief.
