Mega Man shooter “polarized” opinion at Capcom

Tuesday, 7th May 2013 03:50 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Just as the fan base is divided over the shelved Mega Man shooter, so too did Capcom staff harbour mixed feelings about the reboot.

In a thread on Capcom Unity, refreshingly open Capcom USA senior vice president Christian Svensson suggested the publisher was in two minds over the game.

“Given the lack of consensus in this thread alone, that should tell you what you needed to know. Suffice to say, there were very polarized opinions internally on this project as well,” Svensson said.

Fans reacted both with horror and excitement at the prospect of Maverick Hunter, which seems not to have made it much past the prototype stage.

Thanks, Siliconera.

I have mixed feelings about this concept. If it was a completely separate IP spinoff that would not supersede the core franchise, then I would be fine with it. However, this is Capcom (or, well, any company obsessed with money as more important than standards or history), so I don’t doubt for a second that if this game was successful, it would have been turned into the core Mega Man franchise. It fits the profile of games like Tomb Raider, 3rd Birthday and DmC though, of trying to force a reinvention of a character that didn’t need to be reinvented just so the character would fit whatever current trends and gimmicks are most popular in society.

As a whole, I’m glad this game was never made. Maybe it would have been a good game in its own right, maybe not, but this generation has sucked ass for treatment of old IPs. I doubt this would have been any different.

Thanks Capcom but no thanks. Megaman Legends 3 would be way better.

The game definitely had potential. I would definitely revitalize the brand, which could’ve resulted in an amarda of new Megaman games. I just think it would’ve been better as a TPS. But whatever, they changed the hair, so fuck this game. LOLOLOLOL XOXOXO

I for one would have *loved* to have played this – it looks totally badass from the videos and, above all a heckuva lot of fun.
