Tuesday, 7th May 2013 20:46 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

GTFO: A Film About Women in Gaming, a film by Shannon Sun-Higginson exposing the harassment of women in video games, has met its $20,000 Kickstarter goal. The documentary promises to contain “gamers, bloggers, scholars, developers, and other experts,” discussing and revealing the experiences of women in the gaming world, both good and bad. The project has another 60 hours to go. You can find out more on the film through the page, a write up on Kotaku and and interview with Higginsonon Forbes.

    In the meantime Anita Sarkeesian’s amazing $160,000 13 video series still only consists of a single 20 minute average effort video nearly one year later. Money well spent.

    OMFGGTFOBBQ! Another goddamn give me money cause I’m a lazy fuck bad credit having basement dwelling free loading low life living I’m a charity case loser kickstarter fund.

    Who gives a shit about the harassment of women in video games? I can’t believe people actually donated money for crap like this. $20,000?! If you can’t fund $20,000 for your own stupid project then you don’t need to be worrying about showing the world how women get harassed in the gaming world.

    Seriously this shit better have full fledge nudity and girl on girl sex scenes in order to get me to care about this crap. God I hate kickstarter. Its used for nothing but stupidity.

    No surprise here. I don’t think this documentary will go beyond “Gamers hate women because they are immature and feel threatened.”

    A documentary on the effects of anonymity and trolling in general would’ve been so much better. But oh well.

    Better spend your money on something that is worth it:

    Is this going to be another “sexism doesn’t exist” rant thread, filled with angry men?

    More like a thread pointing out how shallow and dumb this so-called “documentary” is most likely going to be, just like Anita Sarkeesian’s con-job was. Though you can always take pride in how much more mature, intelligent and calm feminists are. Because internet trolls in the Youtube comments are way worst.

    Its a shame… This video seems like material for political agendas… “Oh women are treated so horribly.” That in itself is sexist..men get treated the same online…. So…Idk why shes contradicting her “theories”

    No…I was not. I dont feel its right to segregate one sex…if she wants to talk about the good and bad in gaming…talk about both sexes. Women troll as much as men do online…

    @2 No.

    @3 No.

    @6 U wot m8?

    @1 Truth be said, no one actually will remember her. We should, just to explain future gens how far the foolishness and hypocrisy of the human soul can go.

    Impressions: Well I read three times the sentence “discussing and revealing the experiences of women in the gaming world, both good and bad.” just to make sure I’ll remember that when the documentary comes out and actually compare the promise and the final product. IMHO games themselves were not the cause of alienation of the female gender, but humans themselves, again IMHO, I could be wrong.

    When boys go to an older cousin’s/uncle’s house normally they allow the kid to play videogames and all, implying they have one, a girl however is sent to… I dunno, play Polly if her younger female relatives or to cook with her older female relatives. Male and Female gamers incentive their female children to actually play games, normally. Non-gamers just repeat the house-wife cycle, again, normally.

    @6 so, you defend this kickstarter project that’s targeted towards sexism against women, by being sexist in your comment towards men? Do you even see the irony here? Plus, we men also face harassment in online play. We get called names, our family members as well. But we don’t whine about it like you do. Maybe we should do so more often, maybe we’ll get our own kickstarter fund that we’ll put to better use… Like an actual video game

    I think YoungZer0 (#3) makes a good point. The harassment of females online is one part of a wider issue.

    Why does the female issue need to be taken on it’s own? Does this not reinforce the gender divisions in the minds of those who enforce the divide (whether consciously or unconsciously)?

    A topic well worth some debate methinks.

    God you people are fucking morons sometimes.

    @15

    How much you wanna bet if there was this exact same story, but about men in gaming, there would still be ANGRY COMMENTS? Because there wouldn’t be. The knee-jerk reaction of gamers to anything remotely resembling feminism (“THERE’S NO FEMINISM BECAUSE MEN ARE OPPRESSED TOO”) is chauvinist and, yes, sexist.

    Why do you (all of you) have to attack feminism (or stories about women in games)? So what if some people think it’s worthy of discussion? Why the fuck does that make you angry enough that you have to post a comment complaining about it.

    @17

    I’m thinking a female version of Francis, just reading the comments on articles like this?
    No better satire.

  19. YoungZer0

    @18: “THERE’S NO FEMINISM BECAUSE MEN ARE OPPRESSED TOO”

    I don’t know anybody who said that.

    “The knee-jerk reaction of gamers to anything remotely resembling feminism is chauvinist and, yes, sexist.”

    Erm, no, it isn’t. Stop being the typical feminist who throws around heavy words like its fucking candy. That’s like saying being against Islam is racist. Feminism is not Women per se.

    “Why do you (all of you) have to attack feminism”

    Because feminism is female supremacy. It has nothing to do with equality.

    I think this topic goes a little bit over your head and insulting everyone who disagrees with you, isn’t going to help your case.

    Just like this proud feminist here:

    http://youtu.be/7gB0XweIE5s

    Note, this is the same woman who said that MRA (Men’s Rights Activists) need to shut the fuck up and let feminists take care of issues men face.

    The same woman also sang “Cry me a River” when someone mentioned the high male suicide rates.

    Indeed, as #19 points out, you seem to be mixing up your definitions.

    I can only see two people having angry rants in this comment section, and you’re one of them.

    Which, to me, says that you’re just venting, because you’re struggling to deal with other people’s valid opinions. If you disagree with people, debate with them intellectually, instead of labelling anyone who disagrees with you as f-ing morons.

  29. freedoms_stain

    @28, Feminism was originally about equality, today the most vocal feminists have corrupted the movement to the point where it has become a toxic term more akin to some sort of warped “Female Supremacist” movement.

    Any woman looking for equality is better achieving it from the strength of their own back rather than looking towards any group who uses the word “patriarchy” with every waking breath.

    To make it clear I wasn’t in anyway trying to come off as a sexist (trust me you’d know if I were) I just hate kickstarter. Its used for moronic things and like Gekidami explained in #1 people are running away with other people’s money on fake shady promises.

    What are the rules to this kickstarter crap? The first rule to kickstarter should be the crybaby who wants the help of others has to put up front $10,000 of their own money first to get it going. Love how people say they don’t want a socialistic economy over capitalism but every day the masses swim in pig shit known as facebook twitter instagram and now kickstarter. Society is a bunch of idiots.

    I’m going to Mars this planet is infected with stupidity…and fuck you Gheritt White.

    #30 1 year ago
  31. DarkElfa

    @27, ha! I love a play on words. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m, for equality of the sexes but I think only a moron would deny the existence of a double standard in the war between the sexes and you don’t strike me as such.

    The fact is that while the tilt towards sexism is obviously in men’s favor simply due to the sheer staggering difference in populations, its something engaged in and upon both sides.

    I’m seen many cases in many guilds in many MMO’s throughout the years where the girls in the guild talk like sailors, make rude remarks about men, genitalia and flirt non stop but the moment a guy so much as says the word boob, its ban central.

    These are of course the exception, not the rule but too many women in gaming act with near impunity or use their “influence” as a double edged sword to both get what they want and harm those who won’t comply. Kind of like the actual work place sometimes.

    I’ll admit that over the millennia, in a system biased towards them, women had to learn to use their sexuality sometimes to move ahead or achieve the same goals men achieved by merit. However, it’s more often than not used as a weapon these days. Yes, men started the cycle by treating women as objects of lust and desire, but women reinforced the idea because they could make it work for them when so much else didn’t.

    Women need to stop exploiting their femininity if they ever hope to teach men to start respecting it. Real women already know this and act accordingly but there are so many more than do not. Get your ranks in line ladies and we’ll try to do the same, best I can offer.

    @28: “Lewis’s law is an observation she made in 2012 that states “the comments on any article about feminism justify feminism.””

    Oh, what a smart cookie. Couldn’t everyone use that for basically everything? Here, let me prove it:

    The comments on any article about Islam justify Islam.
    The comments on any article about Christianity justify Christianity.
    The comments on any article about Atheism justify Atheism.
    The comments on any article about Hitler justify Hitler.

    Yeah, I’m sorry, but I know too much about feminism to believe in your childish views of the movement.

    You will find out soon enough.

    #32 1 year ago
  33. DarkElfa

    @32, so the comments that feminists make towards men in the comments section of feminist leaning articles justify men’s comments therefore justifying women’s comments….

    That’s an ugly spiral.

    Their is no debate amongst guys scared of losing some kind of status quo. Its laughable that instead of trying to be polite, guys tend to leap straight into the “you wimmin are just as bad!”

    Btw, like my main man zinc says, I’m quite happy in my masculinity. I’m not threatened by an investigation into women in gaming, and the issues they face.
    If they find issues, cool let’s work to solve them. If not, cool that means we’re alright as an industry.

    What’s yer issue with it?

    #40 1 year ago
  41. G1GAHURTZ

    Ah yes. When all else fails, just go for the ad hominem attacks.

    ‘You guys are scared of losing your manhood, insecure, threatened feeling in your private parts, and all that, blah, blah, blah…’

    #41 1 year ago
  42. Samoan Spider

    @41 I thought ad hominem was the default offence for a lot of people around here.

    I’m not sexist, racist, ageist or anything else. I dislike everyone equally without making personal attacks. It’s easier that way. Expect the worse in people and you’ll never be disappointed.

    I’m not weighing in on the issue directly though, because whilst it’s definitely an issue, this doesn’t seem like the right forum for the debate because we have see-sawing opinions at both ends without much give and take.

    #42 1 year ago
  43. Fin

    @41

    Sorry, I didn’t mean that as an ad hominem (honestly).
    I’m just wondering why stories about women in gaming generate comments section like these – honest question.

  44. Christopher Jack

    Umm, I’m a male gamer and after playing several hundred games of Halo, I can’t really ignore the sexism. Sure 90% of those with mics are arseholes to everyone in general but the moment they hear a woman with a mic they harass the fuck out of her with generally sexist comments. “Get bk in DA kitchan!” “Pm me your tits/ass/pussy” “shut up slut/whore” and it goes on like that.

    This is really a problem with trolling in general however woman clearly do get so much more harassment that I believe the majority of female core gamers use simple unisex game tags and never dare to use a mic.

    To summarize I think people need to be more accountable for their actions regardless of whether they are hidden behind a monitor or not. The way a lot of people act I am starting to think that we shouldn’t be entitled to anonymity. Of course I believe we are entitled to our privacy but not at the expense of others.

    #44 1 year ago
  45. Samoan Spider

    @43 Pride is the answer to that. People take it personally when a suggestion like this is made that their hobby isn’t infallible.

    @44 The problem there is that someone told everyone that the internet is free and that free speech is permitted. The issue with that is there are plenty of individuals who take it to mean that they are ‘free’ to say whatever they want without consequence. It’s unfixable. Also I’m not saying free speech is a problem, I’m saying that people are the problem.

    @43:

    I’m just wondering why stories about women in gaming generate comments section like these – honest question.

    Perhaps some guys are just bad at expressing themselves…

    I can see how this article, coming so soon after Sarkeesian’s one and only video (where did the money go?), would cause people to react negatively towards it.

    This guy does a pretty good job of deconstructing her argument in a much more scholastic manner than is generally afforded in a blog comment section.

    And I’m calling out Sarkeesian here, because what she says is typical of what self proclaimed feminists say about gaming, and is possibly what people are expecting from the proposed video in this article.

    This sort of stuff should be debated intelligently, and not with unnecessarily offensive accusations.

    I don’t think I’ve ever seen a feminist debate their opinions. It’s usually a one way verbal discharge, much like the last woman in the video in #32.

    Most, if not all of the time, they, and the men who support them, simply attack any differing opinions with name calling and claims of deep rooted conspiracy theories within ‘society’.

    So maybe, when the likes of these feminists, and those who so enthusiastically support them, meet with those who don’t see what all the fuss is about, but don’t know how to express themselves in a constructive way, in a place such as this, you get comment sections such as this.

    freedoms_stain is spot on. I was thinking the same thing reading through the comments.

    “Actual” feminism responded to an actual need, which is simply to afford women the same opportunities as everybody else. “New” feminism sees woman as the nigger of the world, forever harassed and abused, and seeks to break down this imagined oppressive regime, which to me is just all kinds of bonkers.

    It makes them look like PETA crazies to simply bash left and right without purpose or meaning, talking about shit like Princess Peach needing to be rescued, instead of looking at something that matters, like military service which has been stuck in the past for decades now.

    Wow….These comments in this thread………….

    I used to give my girlfriend my headset when I was winning matches in different FPS games, and have her say something, then listen to the reactions. They were all sexist and condescending, and some outright hostile. Sometimes it was funny, as guys couldn’t handle that they were being beaten buy a girl, bot mostly it was sexist insults.

    I would play random XBLA games and when a women would join in multiplayer and talk, some idiot would ask her what she looked like, about her body, etc.

    I don’t play as much multiplayer as I used to, and I used to really like it, but these days I prefer Single player most of the time, and thats mainly because of the way people act.

    I think it’s interesting that this article gathered so many comments, and some of them are disgusting. Is it threatening to guys to have women say they feel this way? Wouldnt it just be easier to be more repsectful, you dont have to be nice or kind, just dont say anything sexist, is that so hard?
