PS4 Share button won’t be available everywhere

Monday, 6th May 2013 00:08 GMT By Brenna Hillier

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that Sony will allow developers to disable the PlayStation 4′s Share button.

“There will be parts of a game that the maker does not want people to be able to see,” the executive said in an interview with Japanese site 4Gamer translated by Edge.

“For example, on Vita, developers can in certain scenes disable the feature that lets users take a screenshot, and (the Share function) will have a similar mechanism. The creator may not want to make video of the final boss sharable, for instance.”

The Share button is deigned to allow users to quickly and easily capture and upload video. Yoshida said the moment the idea was touted, everyone on the PS4 in-house production team knew it was right.

Himself a passionate gamer, Yoshida firmly believes the Share button will be important to the PlayStation 4 user base.

“I wanted to play Dark Souls all day long, but I couldn’t do that because I was too busy. So instead I would watch people playing it live on Niconico whenever I had some spare time,” he said, referring to Japan’s most popular video sharing service.

“By doing that, you can find other ways to play the game and read comments by other users. I felt that sharing videos is a really important part of enjoying games.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Yoshida reiterated Sony’s messaging that the PS4′s user-friendliness is one of its most important features – that it can switch on and off instantly, won’t make you wait around, and will switch easily between apps. Along with ease of development, this kind of attention to user experience will hopefully make the PS4 the best system for multi-platform releases, he said.

“We need to make sure users consider the PS4 version to be the best and the one they want to play. That might mean that the graphics are better, the controller is more comfortable, or the point I mentioned earlier about the console being more user-friendly, like you don’t have to turn the power on and off or you can switch between your game and Netflix at will. Those things will become key,” he said.

The PlayStation 4 is due during the 2013 holiday period; we’re expecting pricing and date details to be announced at E3 in June.

Don’t really see the point of disabling the screenshot and video capture functionality. People can still do what they do now and capture that stuff manually using external hardware.

Console gaming is limited as F. You have a share button that is already limited and in the end you get this shit where publishers can choose what boss-encounter they can disable.

What this shit is for then? Oh well, at least you can share screenshot with character’s underwear with your friend. Devs are allowing it at least.

That is something, I somehow do and somehow don’t understand with the Vita, too.
On one hand, it is a good thing for the developer, to be able to control those system-functions via an API. For example, you don’t want the player to hear music from the system while playing a music-game, or you can force a watermark on screenshots, etc. The downside (the other hand) is, developers of PS1 and PSP games did not have this API, and so, screenshot functions and music is generally deactivated in PS1/PSP games, which is bad for the player.

I suppose, PS1/2/3-classics, won’t have the share functions and (as well as with the Vita) you won’t be able to hear music from your system, while playing those. It might also be disabled during remote play.

Very misleading title, I assumed that some regions wouldn’t have the physical button. :-/

So your box has integrated screenshot and video recording hardware but you are not able to use it because some stupid dev believes can stop the internet…

Fresh news asshole, your shitty game will be on Youtube anyways.

Sony, you was doing it right…

Kind of defeats the purpose of having a dedicated button, if it only works sometimes.

Still, from a dev point of view, it might give a brief ‘finger in the dike’ sense of control for stopping all of your unfixed bugs going viral.

Hefty amount of over reaction here. Let’s see how many devs actually do this first, and why they do it. For a start people putting lots of clips all over the place of your game is generally a positive thing, free advertising – particularly the cool stuff.

So devs are going to think very carefully before disabling this and where they do they should have a damn good reason. It’s not like they have to enable it for it to work, they have to actively disable it.

Most likely Square will disable the Share button. I remember countless LP videos of Final Fantasy XIII getting flagged by SquareEnix.

I don’t mind this I rather use a share button when I find a glitch like in Tomb raider when I found a bow in the air. Or in uncharted ga when I uppercut someone the guy froze in air mid back flip. Or a sweet reel of gameplay where I own a portion of the game like a boss

I think this will mainly be for when there still is an embargo for the game when it releases and maybe the videos can’t be uploaded yet and just enable the share button after a while.
