Next Xbox out in November for $499, $299 with sub – report

Friday, 3 May 2013 16:05 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

A report from Paul Thurrott claims the next Xbox will launch in early November for $499. Alternatively, you will be able to purchase one for $299 providing you’re wiling to pay a monthly $15 subscription fee for Xbox Live.

Thurrott said on Twitter May 3 (thanks, DrDamn) that he did “screw up one thing” in his report. He originally said the $299 version of the hardware would come with a monthly $10 sub to Xbox Live. He has since rectified his report to state it would be $15 a month instead.

The report also states it will have a Blu-ray drive – as previously reported, and will run on the core Windows 8 OS, also previously noted.

It was also noted in the report that: “The next Xbox must be internet-connected to use. This is source of the “always on”/“always online” rumors and isn’t as Draconian as many seem to believe.”

Microsoft will also release a third-generation Xbox 360 that “will be significantly less expensive than the current models,” and is currently codenamed “Stingray”.

We’ll find out more soon enough once May 21 rolls around.

Thanks, Neowin.

    Expect $500 for the PS4 as well. Still less expensive than a damn iPad. And those get model revisions every single year (sometimes twice a year).

    @11 I swear if anything comes in that might not be 100% perfect for either Microsoft or Nintendo you automatically assume it’s true. Anything with Sony you’ll deny or spin to be good news. Stop focusing on brand names and focus on good games you sheep

    199 or 499 dont matter much if you are forced to pay 120 each year to use this xbox. it dont take a Einstein to see this gonna be costly. on the ps4 ps+ will be voluntary and you get free games to boot if you choose to go for it. sony let you play with your friends online as much you want for free, you as a customer have a choice. mickey$oft dont let you do anything before you pay their fee. with this option, going for a ps4 is just common sense… doing otherwise is just stupidity.

    Why MS don’t use HD DVD dual layer discs for games on the new system is beyond me! Surely it’d be easier to use the tech they already pumped loads of money behind and something they could acquire exclusive rights for rather than pay Sony royalties to use BD discs?

    Everyone has a Blu Ray Player by now so it wouldn’t be the deal breaker it was back in 2007.

    So is it $299 + $10 monthly subscription + $39 Live subscription?

    Or is Live included in the £10 monthly fee?

    #30 2 years ago
  31. DrDamn

    @30
    I’d expect a lot more than live included at $10 a month. Think more movies, TV and entertainment than games though. Maybe it’ll include some games in a PS+ kind of way.

    #31 2 years ago
  32. OnionPowder

    @Seraphemz They also released a wireless adapter so why not force everybody to use that? The HD-DVD ran through USB 2.0, there’s no way you could use that bandwidth to properly stream games anyways. That was just an optional peripheral for a userbase that requested it. Back then nobody knew whether or not Blu-Ray was going to take off so Microsoft covered their bases by providing a way to watch HD-DVDs.

    Yep me too, although Nintendo are using a different type of DVD format that supports 25GB per disk so I thought Microsoft would of gone the same way. But I suppose they need Blu-ray as its more or less the norm nowadays for movies and if they want to catch the mainstream audience then they need it rather than spending tons of money on a new tech just for it to fail like HD-DVD did.

    I just wonder what Sony has spent the money on that Microsoft has had to pay them to use it? also how much…

    “Known already, is that games are installed to the HDD. Plenty of sites have reported it, because it’s true. As a result of this, and the always-on requirement, games can now be played without the disc in the drive.

    There is another reason behind that. Games can now be downloaded from XBLM for free, in addition to being installed from disc, once the retail disc is activated on your account. The disc is basically just for installation and activation purposes.

    In addition to that, developers are being told that a month of Xbox Live Gold is automatically applied to a user’s account, once any new game is installed. This is essentially Microsoft’s answer to calls for a free Xbox Live service while softening the blow of eliminating the used market. If you buy a lot of games,

    Xbox Live basically becomes free. Live subscriptions will remain available separately as well though.”

  45. Hcw87

    People seem to forget that PS4 will have a subscription too, with no details announced yet. Most likely you’ll have to pay for cross-game chat etc (which PSN currently can’t handle). Might end up costing the same as an XBL subscription in the end if you want everything it offers. And i also bet it’ll still go down several times a month for maintenance like it currently does.

    Anyone with a clue knows that Xbox Live is a superior service compared to PSN, with crossgame chat, no monthly maintenance and it costs the same as _ONE_ game to have for a year.

    0.16 dollar per day if you pay the full 60$ for a year (cheaper if you look for offers).

    Worth it if you ask me.

    @45

    PS4 may indeed have a subscription too. But there is no way on this earth that you can say that Xbox Live subscription is better than PSN+ NO WAY AT ALL!

    I have had PS+ since it was launched and its been excellent and even better ever since. What do you get on Live… cross game chat.. what else? seriously. Nothing. PS+ you get 3.. yes thats right 3 FREE FULL PS3 games ever month. I have gotten games like Red Dead Redemption, Batman AC, Just Cause 2, Infamous 2, Hitman, Mortal Kombat, the list goes on ALL FOR FREE!

    I like many other could care less about cross game chat. It gets annoying when your playing a game and your friends want to talk. Most games have chat built in and the only time I want to talk to my friends is when we are in a coop game or multiplayer game. I dont want to talk to a friend whilst he plays COD and I play Killzone. What’s the point!?

    PS+ same price ONE full game for the year and you get 3 FULL PS3 game and now 3 FULL PSVITA games as well FOR FREE! not to mention free wallpaspers, avatars, early beta access for certain games

    Live is the same price, and you get no games, cross game chat which is annoying and pointless. Oh yea, and there IS monthly maintenance its scheduled to effect as little people as possible in that area ie in the middle of the night, same as PSN.

    Its kind of pitiful how foolish some people are, defending
    1)Always On
    2)Paying for a P2P multiplayer service.

    I suggest stop being so emotionally invested in a huge corporation. Your shallow defence only breeds suspicion you’re in denial.

    Anti consumer behavior is just that.
    And when groups like Anon smell the anti consumer rat of Always On console, what will you do with a brick that wont work till its online again? What would a DDOS attack with Windows 8 X720s do to XBL?

    Oh, what does the future hold.

    @Monkeygourment according to post @52 you say the ps4 is intended to be always on which is true to some degree but it doesn’t require an online connection to play the game itself unlike the next xbox which i assume it does, the so called information in this article have been around in the middle-east for too long, so if the next pieces of information are true to what i know then the next-xbox will be a rundown of the ps4
    taking 2 generations back quality of Graphics Cards and the ps4 to be as strong as a 7850 AMD radeon HD or its a modded version of it.

    #61 2 years ago
  62. monkeygourmet

    @61

    All I’m trying to point out that they will ultimately be very similar machines. Sony have put so much into the ‘shared’ experience, you will be missing out if your not ‘always’ connected.

    What about the system patches too?

    I can’t see much difference at all between the media focus the 720 and PS4 are obviously trying to push.

    #62 2 years ago
  63. viralshag

    @62, the difference is Sony is telling gamers what they want to hear… It’s clearly NOT all about the games as the PS3 offered a lot of the same services as the 360 and the PS4 will be no different.

    #63 2 years ago
  64. malethief

    I’ll just wait for the announcement confirmation as some of the details are so sketchy I’ll take it with a grain of salt. Either way I’m getting both systems at some point it’s a just matter of if I want to pay for ps+ or xbox live

    #64 2 years ago
  65. Templar_Dante

    Hey Monkey, you think PS4-XB720 will be similar machines? The only guy that says that is Michael Patcher, so you agree with that madman?
    You think 1820 GFlops is similar to 1200GFlops?

    The PS4 has seperate ARM CPU for OS and Background tasks.
    The PS4 has seperate chip for sound and recording/distributing/coding/decoding video.

    MSFT is rumored to be locking out two cores and 2GB of ram for the same fuctions.

    From a gaming perspectives these are two different beasts.
    From a media perspective, its rumored to be even more different.

    Unless you’re american, this console is not for you.
    XBL will be pushed to 10$ US per month and include access to ESPN and MLB etc etc.
    So if you live outside of the US and none of that stuff interests you, to bad. You WILL be paying the same/ or more for people that do. Weather or not you use the apps, you’ve paid for it already.

    Yes, you get free games that got released 1-2 years ago. I don’t know about you, but the games i want to play i play on release. Got no interest in waiting a year to be able to play it for free.

    ”I like many other could care less about cross game chat. It gets annoying when your playing a game and your friends want to talk. Most games have chat built in and the only time I want to talk to my friends is when we are in a coop game or multiplayer game. I dont want to talk to a friend whilst he plays COD and I play Killzone. What’s the point!?”

    Spoken like a true fanboy in denial (i got a Wii/PS3/360/PC and i play them all, so don’t even try spinning that around on me).

    Also you sound like a hypocrite when mentioning PS+, which most people with a PS3 pay for (and still whine about Xbox Live having a subscription).

    Not defending a company at all, and i play PS3 aswell. Just stating facts that as a service, Xbox Live is superior.

    I think you need to check what you actually get on PS+ rather than what you think you get. Recent title are Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs and the Cave.

    That said I don’t do comparisons between Live and PS+. Similarly priced but two very different services with value in both if that is what you are looking for.

    #69 2 years ago
  70. Joe Musashi

    @69 “check what you actually get on PS+ rather than what you think you get.

    Good point. Let’s not forget new titles that launched for free – such as Double Dragon Neon and Hell Yeah – Wrath of the Dead Rabbit. Most recently there’s been Thomas Was Alone and (I think) Knytt Underground.

    @71
    So you were wrong then? Also as you pointed out Live is low cost per month, so is PS+. Even with some older games they aren’t available *that* cheap. Full price it’s £3.33 a month for a lot of titles. Over the full year they are under £1 each – less if you have a Vita, even less if as you can get the sub cheap (as you can Live). I paid £20 for a full year recently. Where are you able to get hold of full titles of the quality on PS+ for less than a quid?

    I think the point is you should stick to discussing and extolling the virtues of a service you know about and not one you don’t. I agree Live is a good service if you play online a lot with friends.

    #73 2 years ago
  74. Hcw87

    @73
    Where was i wrong?

    Lets take me as an example for now (or any other hardcore gamer), when it comes to PS+.

    I buy every game i’m interested in when it’s released (or a few weeks after). Crossgame chat is a big convenience and it’s not included in PS+ (there was talks about adding it, but got canned).

    Why should i get PS+? I don’t really see any plus sides. You still get downtime a few times a month because of maintenance, and Sony is slow in updating their Store, usually a few days after XBL. They’ve also yet to patch Defiance on PS3 and they’re currently behind 2 patches (just an example). I just don’t see how someone can say that PS+ is a better deal than Xbox Live Gold. Atleast for me it’s not.

  75. DrDamn

    @74
    “Yes, you get free games that got released 1-2 years ago.”

    Right there. You are wrong on two count. They aren’t 1-2 years old and they aren’t free.

    I get what you are saying. For you Live is better value that’s fine. They are two very different services there is no need or point in comparing them. Try just clearly stating why for you something is good instead of attacking something which isn’t for you.

    microsoft is gonna fuck up this time, windows 8 is a disaster and unfortunately this will be xbox 720′s fate … nevertheless why would sony accept to let microsoft install a blu-ray ?!

    #77 2 years ago
  78. OwningXylophone

    @77

    Because Sony don’t own & didn’t design Blu-Ray technology, it’s designed and owned by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), of which Sony is 1 of 19 directors along with companies like Apple, Warner Brothers, Disney, Intel & Dell.

  79. megaawesome

    Dammit Microsoft,

    Your greed just amazes me. I’m NOT buying the neXtBox, I barely used XBLG on my 360 because I don’t like paying a monthly fee to play online.

    Are they or are they not forcing us to always be online to play the games?

    It seems like the online connection will be required, just not a requirement to have XBLG, but still that’s going to destroy gameplay especially when speeds dip, and forget about when there is no service. You guys suck, why don’t you just make games more affordable, and give exclusive incentives codes inside new game cases so that people that buy new are rewarded for it. That would be so much better than always-on!

    Nintendo Wii U & Sony Playstation 4 for me, and companies better not block out the ability to play used or last gen games on the PS4, we bought the games with our hard earned money, so wtf?

    Assuming Gold stays the same price that makes it :-
    $499 + 2 years of Gold @ $60 = $619
    vs
    $299 + 24 x $15 = $659

    There was also rumours that every game will come with 30 days of Gold as standard. So buy 12 games a year and you don’t need a sub.

    Dude, get in the fucking real world, even GPUs that cost twice as much ALONE as a next gen console such as the Radeon 7990, GTX 690 & Titan couldn’t handle 4k gaming on max settings, even in SLi/xfire you’d probably only achieve 30fps but those 2 cards would quadruple the price of the console & that’s still before including the CPU, mobo, RAM, etc.

    Have fun with your extra pixels, the rest of us will spending that spare cash on something useful- like a life…

    @Christopher sony slave,
    “Dude, get in the fucking real world”

    Keep repeating this sentence for yourself. Because you clearly don’t know the roadmap of next gen videocards from Nvidia.

    700 series of Geforce this year will have Purevideo VP5 hardware video acceleration (up to 4K x 2K H.264 decode). 800 series (2014 April-May release) will feature stacked DRAM and it will easily have 4K output for games.

    2K is already available for gaming and i’m playing with this resolution right now.

    #91 2 years ago
  92. NeutralBlade

    This is an update from last month’s story. The official word isn’t far off, so this will be explained in due time. I’m sure both M&S will be charging fees for online next-gen, and Sony isn’t providing an optional sub, (like PS Plus), I’m sure the vast majority of their services will require a sub fee.

    Sony really can’t afford it, nor want to miss out on sub cash this time around; since obviously their free online strategy failed to derail the 360. All this “sharing” they’re integrating and promoting with their system, is certainly going to come at a cost.

    One thing I will say, is that Microsoft’s $300 package may have it’s own unique sub fee, (higher than regular Live), in order to make up for the $200 loss. It remains to be seen if the $300 package will be a lesser SKU, not the full one at $500. If it’s the same SKU, then I wouldn’t be surprised if it carried a higher sub fee than the regular cost of next-gen Live.

    To speak on 4K gaming, I hope everyone here knows it will never happen on the PS4; the PS4 will support 1080p at best, nothing more. The most you may get out of their 4K feature, is streaming said services online, and compatibility with 4K products such as HDTVs and disc players. It also seems very unlikely that the PS4 will support 4K disc playback, as such a service has not even arrived on the market yet. Sony always hypes the new “premiere” feature of their new console, then later it either never surfaces or fails to meet expectations.

    The 4K tech is coming, but far off from being the standard for movies or gaming. And it will take several years before 4K is even standard. Cable HDTV services still hasn’t managed to make 1080p standard, after all this time. Don’t expect much from the 4K tech, other than very high price tags, minimal support, and extremely long download times if streamed.

    #92 2 years ago
  93. Phoenixblight

    @91
    H.264 is used for video playback and has nothing to do with games. As for the other stuff with the 700 series and 800 series that is all rumors and has not been confirmed yet but hey if you like to report rumors as facts thats your business.

    @92

    Thank you!

  94. Erthazus

    ^ It has to do with the fact that you are an idiot that don’t know that 700 series of Geforce will have a standard of 1.4a for 2K-4K resolution because without it Purevideo up to 4K can’t work.

    Rumor your ass. All of this stuff is confirmed. The roadmap from Nvidia is confirmed up to Geforce 900 series that will launch in 2016.

  108. DrDamn

    @105
    Always On can simply mean that is how the system is designed, not that it is an absolute requirement. I.e. it has a low power mode which means it can be left on when you aren’t using it and still react to requests (like downloads) or recharge controllers or react to a request to turn itself on. The PS4 is designed to be Always On, hell the Wii is too (see WiiConnect24).

    It could be that they support publisher DRM requests for games to be played only when connected, or they need to be validated.

    Less draconian that a “won’t work full stop unless connected” anyway.

    ‘Always On’ is actually a feature, not a necessarily a requirement.
