3D Mario will be released on Wii U by October – report

Friday, 3 May 2013 16:41 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

3D Mario will be released on Wii U by October, according to a report on CVG.

The game was announced by Nintendo back in January and the firm said it will be playable at E3 in June alongside Mario Kart Wii U.

Nintendo has promised time and time again it will have a banner release slate – which it plans to heavily promote – starting in the summer and leading into fall.

Earlier this week, Iwata told investors that the firm was running behind on first-party titles due to pulling talent from various teams to help get the Wii U launch slate out the door.

However, sources close to CVG state this is not the case, as the titles have been instead delayed until after the second Wii U system update rolls out this summer.

I hope it’s a good one, Wii U could use a shot in the arm now that 3DS is up and running…

    Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, 3D Mario… That’d certainly help.

  2. The_Red

Now THIS is good news. While 3D Marios don’t sell as much as 2D ones, they are a HELL of a lot better and more daring. Hell, even as a Mario hater, I can’t deny the quality and importance of Mario64.

@ 6, I don’t know Sini, I haven’t taken MH3U out of the disc drive since it went in on release date: March 19th. 4 hours min. per day. The trolls are out of their mind when they claim there is no games. The library is good enough until Summer rolls around.

    Sales figures don’t lie.

£100 off the RRP, and people still aren’t buying, because they want more games.

People aren’t satisfied with what’s on offer. Simple as that.

October is too late. They need the games out as much before the PS4/720 are due to launch as possible.

It is also possible that there has been a dynamic shift is much of the market place. New hardware may not sell to the same level of demographics that it once did. Nintendo stuff often has a general and broader appeal. I think much of those audiences have gone away. I think we saw it with both Vita and 3DS. I mean heck the industry as a whole peaked some where between 2007 and 2008.

I been saying it for awhile, I think the console (maybe even gaming) market(as we have come to know it) has been shrinking. I think, like a lot of things, the edges fall away first. I think the core will stick around for awhile. Maybe forever. But I think that market will be much smaller then alot of investers think or want it to be.

And that is really part of the problem isn’t it? Investors. They aren’t gamers. Aren’t game developers, coders, artists…aren’t really much of anything. ‘Cept maybe suits. Chasing profits, trends, fads, and gimmicks. Instead of looking for great games to promote, they find buzzwords, fluff, and glitz all in an attempt to create the next great franchise. Investors. Suits.

MS and Sony aren’t part of the solution. Both have been feeding the problem. From advertising to monthly fees. MS is king. Think Sony is going to be much better next gen? The PS4 store “Learns” your likes and dislikes so that Sony can better promote/recommend/market you things.

When you are at a party, and some one loud and obnioxus enters and dominates the dance floor, alot of people will leave. Some go home and some will find another party. Face it folks, you think Nintendo has lost. We all have. Every single one of us. Gaming isn’t dead. It will still carry on, but it will never be the same as it once was.

Were once there stood a hobby, now stands a multibillion dollor industry. And a lot of suits.

Wii U is still having a hard sell because 360 & PS3 are simply too good!

It’s like going up against 2 PS2′s at their peak for fucks sake!

PS4 & 720 won’t have it super easy either, loads of ports and high prices are going to make it a hard sell over a PS3 / 360 with new COD, GTA 5 etc.. etc…

The 360 / PS3 are so old now almost every good game thats ever been released is on them…:

    Castlevania SOTN
    Team ICO games
    Odin Sphere
    all the HD collections
    New games

It’s crazy, any new console is going to struggle a bit, I don’t think the PS4 / 720 are going to have a easy start, especially when Digital Foundary start comparing the launch games to PS3 / 360 games.

Im quite interested to see how many people on this site are first day buyers of either 720 / PS4.

I think Poly said he’s up for whichever has the best launch (the little whore!), but strong Sony fans like Clup / Dragon etc… have already stated that they may wait a year or so because the backlog on PS3 is so strong.

Now obviously, thats each to his own, but it’s draws an interesting point… Are the old consoles just too damn compelling to warrent a £400 / $500 purchase on a new machine tha doesn’t have the strong support.

    This year was soooo strong:

    Tomb Raider
    Last of us
    God of War
    MG Rising
    AC 4
    etc.. etc..

It’s not like MS can turn the plug off on 360 for at least 2 years, I even see the COD from 2014 coming out on it in some form. The have simply become too succesful at the whole media hub thing.

Asking a kid this xmas if he wants a PS4 or GTA 5 / COD Ghosts / AC 4 / Watchdogs (for PS3) AND 3DS XL or Wii U AND games… well, Im not sure what to think?!

It’s probably just going to be me, you & Poly with PS4 / 720 at launch! ;)

I think its going to be a rushed product to just get out there to boost sales for shareholders. I heard the CEO punched a shareholder in the face yesterday at a meeting.

The pressure is on and Nintendo is in the frying pan baby lets see if they jump out to safety or in the fire this Holiday season. COD is in November mind you and PS4 is rumored to launch in October.

    And the 720 (for October).

Considering your critical of the Wii U and you purchased 2 (count ‘em!!!), you must have at least 4 PS4′s pre ordered and maybe 3 720′s?!

And maybe a 4K TV for PS4 4K Blurays?! What do you do for a job TEA? If you don’t mind me asking? :)

Also, Mario won’t be rushed, it was almost certainly a Game Cube game that’s been HDified! ;)

  15. OnionPowder

Are these comments on a Nintendo article without 100% doom outlook from everyone? Am I going mad?

@14 While I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nintendo release a HD Super Mario Sunshine (And I surely hope they do!) They’ve said that the next 3D Mario they show will be a brand new game. Whether or not that’s what gets released remains to be seen but we can guarantee that we will see something new within the next month or so.

I know a lot of people are going to think that the next Mario game has been rushed (it most likely has, at least partially, because Nintendo needs to dominate software launches pre-PS4) but it is good to note that the last console 3D Mario game was in May 2010. So this looks like a good 40 month development time if it does come out in September.

I find it funny how people keep saying Nintendo is doomed cause the PS4 and NeXtbox is comming out this year. For this to be the case, both consoles need to kick off well at the start, which I seriously doubt is gonna happen. A lot of people thought that the WiiU was gonna take off.
About a month ago, a japanese interview with Nintendo from 1997 was translated, and it was about how Nintendo wasn’t able to convey to the general public what was so great about the N64, which is similar to how the WiiU is right now.
Mostly every console needs about a year to get a solid footing in the marked. The PS1 was released late 1994, but one of the first exclusive killer apps for the game was RE1, released in 1996. PS2 was a little special, as the first killer apps came after a year, but it still sold consistently well cause a majority of people bought it since they wanted a DVD player, similar to how people bought the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player, though the PS3 had a 2 year drought.
But another problem for next-gen is that the current-gen is doing so good, so good in fact, that most of the Next-gen games are comming to current gen aswell. Though this isn’t uncommon, it’s especially noticeable this time around.
This isn’t to say I don’t want the PS4 and NeXtbox to do well at launch, I’d love that, but history will likely repeat itself and the first year for these 2 giants will likely be not different from the WiiU’s, just nowhere near as bad.

    “MS is king”.

    …er of what?

“Im quite interested to see how many people on this site are first day buyers of either 720 / PS4″.

“I think Poly said he’s up for whichever has the best launch (the little whore!), but strong Sony fans like Clup / Dragon etc… have already stated that they may wait a year or so because the backlog on PS3 is so strong”.

Umm if they’re strong SONY fans then I must be an elite SONY fan…hell I even capitalise all the letters in SONY ;) I too will be getting a PS4 at launch maybe even 2 :) because I know SONY will deliver unlike Microsoft with their poor ass 1st party and Nintendo with their slow ass 1st party. SONY makes and supports their consoles with the best games.

@ your #14 comment M.G. I most definitely will have a 4Ktv just like I got a 3Dtv for KillZone 3. If SONY says the PS4 will support 4Ktv’s then you bet your ass my PS4 will be connected to a 4Ktv by year end. Also I don’t have any system pre-ordered I’m going in raw with the raving fans and camping over night like I did at the PS3 launch.

I love to be among my fellow gamers trading stories about the console wars, favorite gaming moments, and online ID’s so we can play some online games together. Thats what the new consoles releases are all about. Being with your gaming brother and sisters all geeking out over new hardware. Can’t wait to hook up with some gamer chicks too like I did at the PS3 launch.

Nothing like getting a new gen PlayStation with a piece of ass on the side ;) If any of you guys score a PS4 at launch I hope you use that to your advantage to bring a couple of girls home with you…who wants to play with their joystick alone right :D

I am so back and forth right now MG I honestly don’t know where I stand.

Right now, today, I enjoy my PC and I enjoy my WiiU. I own maybe nine or ten games for the system. Plus digital downloads. I like it.

I hate playing on my xb360. Every time I boot it up I make myself angry with MS. I blame alot of my lost enjoyment of gaming on MS. Hard to explain.

I have always had a hard time playing PS3. I just don’t like the controler, and to this day the only gamers that I know that owns one are folks I meet here.

I have enjoyed great games on both PS360 systems. But neither thrill me. And I can not articulate why. I just don’t know.

All of that being said, I fully agree with you. I think the current systems hinder new system sales. I mean if MS put out Stingray and it costs 100usd. Why would anyone buy a XBnxt over that?

I honestly think that todays games have reached a point where graphicly there isn’t a lot of room to improve without substantualy raising hardware price points. In other words they are good enough. I don’t think graphics will sell new hardware to most of the market.

All comes down to my King: Price Point.

But at 500usd for a new XB…500usd buys a lot of games for your old XB.

I like what I have seen from PS4 thus far. But alot of the shit MS is getting over XBnxt is prolly going to be copied by Sony. It is just the way the biz is headed. So I, like all of you, will be watching to see how things pan out.

I just am going to have a hella strong problem buying MS. Easier to buy a Sony. But I will wait till I know more.

  22. Clupula

I would just like to point out, since my name is being brought up, that I am NOT a fan of any manufacturer. Yes, Sony have given me more of what I wanted than other hardware developers, and I assume that will continue into the next gen, but I do not buy items just because the Sony logo is on them. If the PS4 had nothing but a steady stream of sports and FPS titles, I would end up NEVER buying one. If Sony were to switch the Dualshock 4 for a tablet controller on the PS4, I would not buy one. If they were to change the location of the analog sticks, I would not buy one.

Sony give me what I want, so I support them. If Sony ceased to that, I would cease to support them.

I am not buying a PS4 day one, because it will not have an adequate amount of games that I will want to buy. Plus, the first year or two of a system is always when they’re in the process of working out the hardware bugs. Whether it be the RROD on the 360 or having to turn first year PS1′s upside down so that cutscenes wouldn’t stutter, the first batch of a system is usually somewhat crap.

But I have no loyalty to Sony. If another company were to suddenly give me more of what I wanted than what Sony offers, I’d buy things from that company.

I mock Nintendo fanboys because they live in a world far removed from reality. I would never mock someone who bought Nintendo products because Nintendo gave them everything they wanted. There IS a difference.

@19 100% can say the PS4 will not play games in 4k. As for blu-rays in 4k? Good luck with that. The PS4 supports a maximum 50GB BD, which are already pushing it with a 1080p resolution. I doubt you’ll be able to get good quality 4k renders fitting within a 50GB BD. 4KTVs are a waste, just as the 3DTVs they pushed before were a waste. Wait 3 years before getting a 4KTV. Also 1080p streams will look worse on a 4KTV over a 1080p as LED/LCD look like shit when they stretch resolutions.

@9: Sorry, OG. I don’t agree. This is the first Nintendo console that completely failed to get my interest. I own every single one of them up to and including the Wii. I wanted to like the Wii U. I gave it every consideration. I certainly would have bought it if I had experienced even a fraction of the pull the other Nintendo systems had for me. Shrinking market or no, this system is drawing a blank. Only good, unique games can fill that in.

@6,13 Nintendo has made a lot of missteps with the U, but rushing a 3D Mario game will not be one of them.

That would be like Microsoft half-assing next-gen Halo or Sony phoning in Uncharted 4, in any case it would be brand suicide (moreso for Nintendo & MS, since they have fewer flagship IP).

No, if anything, it will be pushed back to ensure quality, but it certainly won’t be rushed. For Nintendo’s sake, I hope it launches on time, and it should be; it’s probably been in development since the moment SMG2 was finished.

Nintendo has made a lot of missteps with the U, but rushing a 3D Mario game will not be one of them.

    I wouldn’t be so sure.

Mario Sunshine was a rush job. It’s one of the most disappointing games I’ve ever played.

I was a huge Mario fan when I was younger. I finished Super Mario Land about 60+ times, could finish SMB and SMB3 in under 10/15 minutes, got all the Yoshi tie-ins, etc, etc…

But Mario Sunshine is a clear example of how Nintendo can, and have delivered poor marquee titles.

And let’s face it. Right now, they’re almost certainly trying to shoe horn the gameplay into the tablet as much as possible.

The danger is that they won’t do it properly, or they may even end up going away from what makes Mario so fun and enjoyable, just to try and make the tablet seem relevant.

@12: I for one won’t get a PS4 at launch. I have a stockpile of games on my PS3 and my Wii to keep me going until 2015 easy. And on that day when I take the plunge, most of the bugs will have been ironed out, it will be cheaper, better and have more games available for it.

There’s one lesson I’ve learned from this generation, and that is that buying a game when it releases is madness. If you can wait, you get more, almost every time. I’m sure next year you’ll be able to get Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, Borderlands 2 and Dishonored new at 2/3 the price with double the content (all the DLC). Even Dark Souls is now available with that extra stuff thrown in.

You also don’t get burned by stinkers like Dead Space 3.

The late bird gets the worm. And now that I have a stockpile of games, I’ll be able to wait. It’s kind of a shame though, missing the zeitgeist, and not being able to listen to podcasts or read threads for fear of spoilers, but…

no time atm. the sun is shining too…that said, i truly loved mario sunshine. one of my favourite mario games for sure. i would so love to see a sequel – on a doomed, darker island where mario has to rescue luigi.

a 3d mario game is desperatley needed and wiiu should have launched with one and then get nsmbwiiu later…but it is coming now. good. not enough.

@mg. lol. yea i will probably get one of those beasts at launch. (and we both know you will as well…) maybe even the ps4, something i thought would be almost impossibe only a year ago. well we will see about that. what tg said is so true though. it pays off to wait. sometimes it can be crazy fun not to wait though and play a game day one, all hyped up and everything -something this fading gen wasn’t really delivering anymore for me. maybe, just maybe, some of the next gen games will bring this back. then i will buy into it. it can be worth it. gaming is about emotions too and that said, @og post no. 9: great post, so sad but so true.

i will need a new screen too this or next year. not going for 3d or 4k though. just want a slightly bigger and better one. i move in another room and i will change my setting slightly then.

ok, all this typed on a vita. i am exhausted. have a good day.

@26 I agree, Sunshine is the worst of the 3D Mario games. But, IMO, that was due almost entirely to the poor setting–Isle Delfino?–and its shittily designed inhabitants–whatever they were called. It strayed too far from familiar Mario territory and inserted classic enemies/elements into an incongruous world.

However, it was still a lot of fun to play. The controls were flawless, and the water backpack mechanic was well implemented. If they had set it more appropriately, and replaced those fuckface Delfinians with toads, then I think it would have gone down as a classic.

NSMBU’s return to form suggests, to me, that they have learned their lesson, and will not repeat a (partial) blunder like Sunshine again.

    @27 +1
I’m waiting till the PS4 slim myself. So, holiday 2016? I literally have 50 games yet to play between now & then to keep me busy.
