Crystal Dynamics: new game to be announced soon per CV

Thursday, 2nd May 2013 10:47 GMT By Dave Cook

Crystal Dynamics has been long-rumoured as working on a reboot of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, but we may find out either way soon, according to the LinkedIn profile of the studio’s lead principal artist Matt McCulloch.

Internet sleuth Superannuation discovered some interesting lines on McCulloch’s profile that read, “Creating wildly cool environments for a soon to be announced title for Crystal Dynamics.”

Under his job descriptor he added, “Working closely with all disciplines to create unique, efficient and malleable levels. more on that to come…”

Meanwhile, the Crystal Dynamics career site has posted several jobs at its Redwood City studio, calling on candidates to apply, “To be part of creating the foundation for a brand new AAA game.”

If the game is ‘brand new’ then a Soul Reaver reboot is probably off the table. It seems a safer net would be Square’s recently-revealed new IP Murdered: Soul Suspect. The project’s developer is currently still under wraps, so it could be Crystal Dynamics Redwood.

E3 is next month and Tomb Raider is out of the gate, so the logical conclusion is that whatever this project is, it will be getting revealed at the show. We don’t know for certain though so treat all of this as rumour for now.

What do you think it is? Let us know below.

Cheers OXM.

    Yeah…but wasn’t Murdered:Soul Suspect officially announced?

@1 Yeah in a teaser sense. The lines between what constitutes a reveal and a teaser get more blurred by the day. Plus, the Murdered developer is still TBC.

Not saying you’re wrong, just saying it could go either way at this rate tbh. Damn smoke and mirrors :P

“a Soul Reaver reboot is probably off the table.”
Not at all, especially not with the mention of malleable levels. The source merely states it’s a brand new game, not a brand new IP ;)

You think anyone would want to revisit the big budget action-fantasy genre after the failure of DarkSiders 2? Seems doubtful.

They once mentioned that they are not working on any Soul Reaver reboot. They are either lying or another studio is because Square Enix secured some domains that make reference to Soul Reaver recently, it would be weird if another studio took the franchise since they are the original creators.
On the other hand, the studio has also said that they are working on two new IP’s aside from Tomb Raider which is out the door now.
Anyway, I think they are definitely presenting something at E3 or maybe even along with Microsofts presentation in May or also at E3. They seem to have Microsoft closer to their hearts.

@7: They don’t need to make a reboot to make a Soul Reaver game. A sequel/prequel or remake is possible too. Wrapped up in that is that just because it’s not a Soul Reaver game doesn’t meant it isn’t set in the broader Legacy of Kain universe. Also, buying up domains could be a preemptive measure for any potential future plans.

I’d be worried about work on a Soul Reaver game from them these days anyway. It’d probably try to take cues from Twilight.

Probably a LoK reboot. A SE official on TombRaiderForums actually very interested at May 21st XBOX event. This might be announced/shown there.
