Star Citizen has now attracted $9 million in crowd funding

Holy moly, Star Citizen just won’t quit.

Roberts Space Industries keeps a running total of how much cash has been pledged to the project through its now-closed Kickstarter and private crowd-funding campaigns, as well as ongoing pre-orders and subscriptions. That tally today clicked over into $9 million, all coughed up by customers more than 18 months before launch.

The number alone is astounding, but what’s even more impressive is that it only hit $8 million in mid-February, so it’s brought in $1 million in about ten weeks. No wonder Cloud Imperium Games opened a second studio.

The old school space sim has been in the works for over a year and is expected on PC in late 2014, possible with Oculus Rift support. After making noises about how it wouldn’t run on consoles, Chris Roberts said recently he’d think about bringing it to the PC-like PlayStation 4.

    I think this is absolute proof that, in general, the most boring people is where the money are. I find that “starving artists” is alive and well today, with completely generic and mind-numbingly dull repeats of the past being King, whilst genuinely novel, beautiful, and engaging things are left by the roadside.

    Humans really aren’t creatures of novelty, are they? They never move outside of their stagnant comfort zones, their little philosophical hole-in-the-ground which contains nothing but those things they understand completely and don’t feel at all challenged by. This is a disappointing realisation.

    I know I’m right, too. The Realm has been largely ignored, whilst things like Star Citizen keep getting more money. You can’t watch the trailer there and tell me that that isn’t art. This is why gaming won’t have a Citizen Kane — the money is all going into the next game where you kill people generically in generic settings of genericness.

    Am I the only one who finds that at all depressing?

    @2 I’m certain you’re not alone on this, but I am extremely happy to see this game achieve a high level of funding. Innovation in games, like science, music and many other creations, is built upon what has come before and that is not a failing of human nature: “Standing on the shoulders of giants”.

    I do take the point about the generic nature of it all, however I don’t see that this fits this particular game. There just haven’t been enough good examples in the last decade unlike your FPS’ and RTS’

    2: I find it depressing that many good looking Kickstarters fail, but I don’t find it depressing that awesome-looking games in one of my favourite genres (that’s been entirely neglected for well over a decade) get tons of money. I don’t think you quite understand why Star Citizen appeals to people, and I don’t think it is fair to the game or its backers to essentially say “people want THIS but not THAT – people are BORING!”.

    Also, re: repeats of the past: The Realm is a point & click adventure.
