Nintendo will not hold large E3 presentation this year

Thursday, 25 April 2013 07:19 GMT By Naren Hooson

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced in a financial results presentation that the company is not planning on holding a large presentation at E3 this year.

Iwata gives the reason for this being that the event hosts different groups of people such as gamers, analysts and distributors which all want varying types of information from Nintendo. Therefor the company feels different methods will be needed to convey the appropriate information to said groups.

This will result in Nintendo holding smaller events at E3 to individually target each group. The focus is said to be on software for the US market, courtesy of Siliconera.

Iwata also said he will not be speaking at E3 as well as adding, “There will be one closed event for American distributors, and we will hold another closed hands-on experience event, for mainly the Western gaming media.”

In light of this information, NOA’s senior director of corporate communications, Charlie Scibetta, clarified things a bit more.

“As you’ve already seen, a lot of news about Nintendo games and services that traditionally would be held until E3 is being delivered this year through Nintendo Directs, and various press events. This approach will continue between now and E3. No matter where you are in the world, you’ll be fully informed,” he said.

“We look forward to continuing to provide you with Nintendo news and content in ways you haven’t before experienced. Beyond the news that will be communicated through Nintendo Direct videos in the run up to E3, at the show itself we’re hosting two smaller events on Tuesday morning before the LACC opens instead of just our traditional one event. A media event and a partner presentation will both occur that morning. While the audiences will be different between the two events, both will occur on the Tuesday morning of E3 (June 11) which is the date and time period the public has come to expect for Nintendo to deliver E3 news.

“At the Nokia theater we’ll meet with business partners (retailers, publishers, analysts, etc.) from the NOA territory and discuss our plans for driving the business and providing tailored information that this group finds useful to their operations. Nintendo has done these same type of business meetings at past E3 shows, but has not in the past few years. This year we are returning to that business partner meeting format.

“New this year at our booth in the LACC, prior to the show opening, we’ll invite a small group of media to play our games. We will have a strong line-up of beloved franchise experiences available for immediate hands-on play.

“We are continuing to consider exciting new ways to bring the news of our games and information directly to the players at home during the E3 timeframe, and will have more to say about that at a later date.”

Apart from a new 3D Mario game and a new Mario Kart game for Wii U, Nintendo have not revealed any other information on other games they intend to present at this year’s E3.

This might have been a brave and interesting decision any other year but this one. MS and Sony are going to do everything in their power to have the craziest and most bloated E3 conferences to gain mainstream media attention.

What Nintendo is doing is allowing itself to get lost in the noise. Of course maybe they figured that either way mainstream (non-gaming) will only focus on PS4 and Xbox Next either way, so why waste their energy?

Hopefully those smaller events and ND’s are full of unannounced mega exclusives. Otherwise, this could prove to be fatal.

Surely hosting an E3 event is worth it just for marketing purposes. The problem with marketing is how difficult it is to attribute sales to. I mean like over half of us will at least track some parts of E3 & we’re also likely to spread our appraisal & some info to several of our more casual gaming mates.

  4. The_Red

    @3
E3 may have not posses the necessary marketing value to them (Nintendo) or they might at least think it doesn’t. Some Nintendo fans are already defending the situation ans saying Wii / DS / 3DS didn’t succeed because of E3 or mainstream’s attention during E3 but the word of mouth from mainstream TV shows during launch.

And there lies the problem. TV / family shows are not going to have live Wii U demos, 1 year after launch for a console that has such a complicated controller (compared to original Wii).

Plus above all else, this isn’t even about people that are already for or against Nintendo. In the end, this will be recognized as a sign of WEAKNESS by many other observers. Doesn’t matter rightfully or not when your 2 competitors are giving it their best at E3.

I don’t see how this is a good move. The reasoning sounds like bullshit too.

  6. fearmonkey

I think N realizes that it’s futile to try and compete with their two compeititors who are releasing their next consoles. The money MS and Sony will spend will probably be outrageous and Nintendo doesnt want to be judged against it.

It could be a smart move if they release alot of game information and have real reasons for gamers that own a Wii-u to be excited. Smaller and right to the point presentations or showings would go right to the heart of the concerns about Wii-u.

Where this could backfire is if they don’t really have anything to show for E3, so they hold off and wait till the tokoyo game show or something like that. The bad press they could get from not having anything exciting at E3 could be really bad for them. Most of the press for the Wii-u has been negative since December. If they don’t have a way to counter that, the large media reporters will spin it badly for nintendo, and favorable for Sony or MS or both. IF mass news outlets have negative reporting, it will be hard for Nintendo to counter it.
I hope they have their ducks in a row……………

I can’t understand this. E3 is about shouting from the rooftops not whispering behind closed doors. Why even bother fricking going if you’re gonna do that?

I think Iwata has lost the plot and can’t help but think they are shooting themselves in the foot here.

Having said that they may have been forced to do this after showing off many games in their January Nintendo Direct for Wii U and last weeks 3DS ND – they simply might not have enough new content to show off that warrants a big E3 presentation.

    #8 2 years ago
  9. monkeygourmet

Maybe Reggie got in a ‘pissy’ after the Iwata news from yesterday?

Either way, I think this is a bad move, especially this year.

If they can drop some huuuuuge bombshells it might work, if however, it’s just all the same info from the years Nintendo Directs, well…

there may be trouble ahead! :)

    #10 2 years ago
  11. G1GAHURTZ

There’s absolutely no defending this move. It’s a complete cop-out from Nintendo, who are now letting it be known, loud and clear, that their products can’t match the competition.

Seriously, E3, is the biggest stage in the gaming calendar. It’s where you try to convince as many people as you can to invest in your product over the next 12 months or more. Yet Nintendo themselves aren’t investing in it.

Say what you want about side stepping the heat, but third place is better than not finishing at all…

  12. Telepathic.Geometry

Yeah but, apart from us hardcore types, who bitch and moan and whine every fucking year anyway, who else is listening? The media? They’ll get their direct feed videos direct from Ninty anyway, there’s no need to go to E3 for that. Devs? I think Ninty won’t be winning them over on the show-floor at E3, behind closed doors? Maybe.

I just think that us hardcore types see E3 as a big chance to sell your goods, but how much good does it really do? Most of the big announcements come out before E3 these days anyway. Apart from us, nobody cares, or are starting to care less and less about E3. At least as I see it…

    #12 2 years ago
  13. Fin

    @12

    No, you’re wrong.
E3 isn’t about the core at all (PAX is probably the closest to that), E3 is about exposing your product to the mainstream press (+retail partners). It’s the one chance you have everyone in one place at one time.

You really think mainstream media will run snippets of Nintendo Direct footage? I don’t think that’s ever happened before.

Compare it to the Sony announcement, which made news everywhere, both mainstream and game press.

    #13 2 years ago
  14. Erthazus

It’s a sign of E3 losing it’s importance in the industry in general. And the success of Nintendo Direct so far.

All console audience is a casual POS and no one cares about it. Even ACTIVISION or Rockstar is not there.

E3 is not important anymore. You can say everything you want, but this is truth.

E3 is still important, it’s stupid to think it’s not. It’s the one event even the fringe gamers will talk about and look into.

The mainstream press usually send people to cover E3, then they run an article or two on it.

It’s the gaming press that covers the extra announcements on the periphery (like Nintendo Direct).

Over the next few months, it certainly looks like MS has 3 opportunities to hit the mainstream press. 2 for Sony, and after this move, none for Nintendo.

For MS, the 21 May reveal, E3 and the 720 retail launch.

Sony has already revealed the PS4, so E3, and the PS4 retail launch.

No reveals for Nintendo. No launch for Nintendo. And now Nintendo doesn’t even have E3.

And who from the mainstream press do you think is going to cover a Nintendo direct, where they announce 2 Wii U games, and some 3DS stuff?

They really do need to hire someone who knows what he’s doing, because right now, they look lost at sea.

  21. aleph31

@6 and @11 are right. Nintendo cannot cope with the other big two, and everything they could show would just bring bad press compared with the muscle that Sony and Microsoft are going to put there.

They are just trying to avoid even more hilarious comparisons between Wii U and PS4 / Next Xbox, therefore avoid being seen in the same stage.

Which I feel sorry about, but that’s what it is.

    #21 2 years ago
  22. Beta

E3 may not be as relevant as it once was but it’s still easily the most widely known gaming event.

Nintendo haven’t had a really good E3 in a little while though.

They will have to rely on first party games to make the Wii U successful imo, much like with the Wii. How would they support third party games released on PS4 and the next xbox when their console is much less powerful?

    @11 – Agreed!

I think this sums up all:

Trying to compete with the no-doubt massive announcements from those two companies by spending 90 minutes talking about titles for the well-knwon Wii U might be a bit like trying to shout into a hurricane.

One thing is for sure: you can’t win an award for “most disappointing E3 press conference” if you don’t have a press conference at all.

  26. Ekona

To be fair to Nintendo, they’re in a no-win situation with this.

If they do the big presentation, no-one’s going to care anyway. Realistically, even if they announced a brand-new Mario game due for release the following week they won’t be getting any column inches over the 720 or the PS4.

If they do the big show, they still get the same amount of coverage but they’ve spent a load of money they didn’t need to. People will still compare the systems and the games, and Nintendo will (likely) still come off worst.

I still think they should do a presentation, but I can understand their logic for not doing so.

@32 you are right about E3 for the last two years, but that was the result of a stagnant industry that was not being refreshed with new hardware. This E3 is going to be big, and Nintendo is going to miss it. Good luck that they have tons of cash thanks to Wii / DS, so they will survive the Wii U debacle, but another fail and then they will follow SEGA steps.

To be fair, they had full featured conferences during last 2 E3s and both times, they were completely ignored by the mainstream. Hell, even the semi-pointless SmartGlass got more non-gaming attention than the whole Wii U presentation.

With Xbox 3 and PS4 at E3, it’s obvious that Nintendo won’t be able to get the mainstream attention even if tried. Also, Nintendo Directs may have been successful but there is no way in hell that they can reach mainstream.

So they must have calculated that either way, a big E3 conference won’t help them. That may be logical and true but here’s the problem: Regardless of E3′s relevance or importance, it is still E3 and not having a major conference alongside your 2 competitors, WILL be seen as a sign of weakness, maybe even a sign of temporary surrender.

I don’t think it’s a sign of weakness or anything like that to be honest, it just seems like a smart choice.

If they haven’t received much attention in previous years, why spend money trying to compete on the same level as two competitors getting ready to launch new hardware?

Their machine is out, from here on they just need the games and they don’t need an E3 presentation for that. At this point they have to rely on software to encourage peoples willingness to buy their products and I don’t think a big E3 blowout will add much to that.

Money saved this year could add to a much bigger/better show next year when they’re not competing with hardware launches and (hopefully) will have shared third party support with multiplat games, in which they show off the additional functions of the pad.

    @41
Maybe my use of “completely” was excessive but I don’t think those links prove they got mainstream attention. Sure, even sites like that reported on Adam Orth scandal but it wasn’t really a mainstream event.

Mainstream event is the recognition that Kinect got during its unveiling. PS3 got years ago. Mainsteam never cared about Revolution. They only cared when Wii was out for a week and most family shows were showing it. Wii U never had that sort of attention.

Having reported links on a new piece of tech is one thing and having mainstream pay real attention to your game related product is another. IMO, Ninty never got the former for Wii U and that might be their reasoning behind this move. Not saying it’s a good move though. When Sony and MS are roaring as loud as they can for mainstream attention during E3, even a 100 Nintendo Directs can’t help them beyond the people that knew and cared about Wii U.

    @42
Here’s the thing. This really might not be a sign of weakness (I disagree but let’s go with it for a bit). This could be a smart move but part of my point isn’t about what it actually IS.

It is about how it will be SEEN by the most. How it will be judged by the most, rightfully or not. This is about image and while it may not sound much, I think that part is a definite negative, regardless of how well Nintendo Directs work during actual show / E3.

THIS IS THE SIGN OF THE END FOR NINTENDO… THE OLD GENESIS COMMERCIALS WITH “NINTENDON’T” IS SO FITTING. YET ANOTHER MARIO GAME WILL NoT SAVE THEM. THEY HAVE MILKED THE MARIO BRAND WORSE THAN A COD GAMES FOR YEARS, THIS TIME PEOPLE HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF IT. THE MARIO REPLACEMENT IS HERE AND IT IS CALLED LITTLE BIG PLANET… SUCK IT UP NINTENDO FANBOYS IT IS GAME OVER FOR YOUR OLD PLUMBER FART MARIO.

  49. viralshag

@44, But everyone here is saying that no one paid any attention to their previous presentations so what image are losing?

Everyone knows the focus will be about the new hardware. I really don’t think Ninty need to join in a pissing contest just for the sake of it.

Let’s face it, Ninty brand games are going to be the system sellers and you really don’t need an E3 show to build hype for that and people will still buy them regardless of seeing them (or not) at E3.

They’re still going to have a presence there, just not as big as the other two definitely will have. As gamers we always moan about terrible management and spending within the industry, now it seems we moan when they don’t do that too.

As usual, game companies just can’t win.

    #49 2 years ago
  50. aleph31

@49 Of course the comments section is full of overreaction, hypercritical flamebait etc. but you should consider this:

    – First time in E3 history that Nintendo is not going to give a full-blown presentation.

    – Wii U is selling like crap, and everyone bashes it because of it lack of power (admitely it also happened to the Wii, the lack of power I mean, and it was a hit, but this time the prospect is rather weak)

    – The casual crowd now looks towards Apple / Android

So this time I think it is justified to say that yes, Nintendo cannot win no matter what they do, just focus on damage control.

    #50 2 years ago
  51. ps3fanboy

    @49

They sat on the Wii for so long and got caught off guard with the advent of the smartphone. They lost both the core gaming audience and mobile. Then the Wii U was a rushed and become a totally flopped attempt and complete failure. Their future is in software only, but even that won’t last. How long can the people be awe by yet again a rehash of the Mario games?, i will tell you this, not much longer. Nintendo seems to have a real disconnect with Western Media and Gamers. If they’re doing this to simply save money, or because they don’t have anything to show, then they are really done.

    #51 2 years ago
  52. viralshag

@50, I still think it’s a little early in the day to consider the WiiU a flop or disaster considering it’s the only “next-gen” console out right now and we have no idea how the next Xbox and PS4 will perform sales wise.

I do personally agree that I don’t think it’s going to do that well and yes, it is underpowered and (I think) launched at the wrong time. However, I would rather wait and see how the competition does before I make any solid claims on the consoles “failure”.

@51, There’s not much there that I don’t agree with. I’m not a big Ninty fan by any means but I don’t think this move is the beginning of the end for them. Not yet anyway.

    #52 2 years ago
  53. aleph31

@52 Yes you are right, it is too early to call it a “complete disaster”, maybe it just stays on “medium disaster” :)

Jokes aside, the only solution I see for them would be to sell at a loss (something Nintendo never does), $199 would be a great deal imho (and $149 after MS and Sony start selling their last-gen hardware with reduced price after launching PS4 – Next Xbox)

    #53 2 years ago
  54. ps3fanboy

@52 and how the hell do you think this ‘nextgen’ wii-u that cant cope with this gen ps3/x360 games, will cope with ps4/x720 games?… nintendo already have shown they are depending everything on second party games, to sell their wii-u. it is clearly the beginning of the end we see right here.

    #54 2 years ago
  55. viralshag

@53, Well the console is still profitable now and the company, as recently reported, is also still profitable.

So I think they just need to hold their course and get more games out. The 3DS was a slow burner at first and they didn’t give in to the immediate cries of a price-cut but when they did, it seems to be doing ok.

I imagine a similar situation with the WiiU will see them through. They should rightly wait and see what the competition pricing is like, why lower the price if you’re going to be cheaper than your competitors anyway. It makes no sense.

@54, Well you could say the Wii had the same “problem” but in terms of sales, it still did very well.

I just think we should all wait and see how the “true next-gen” consoles do before cheering the failures of others.

    #55 2 years ago
  56. aleph31

@55 hope you are right, I wouldn’t like to see Nintendo crashing hard. But regrettably my feeling is that Wii U is going to put Nintendo in a much less healthy position than they are now, basically without any safe buffer to afford for another failure.

    #56 2 years ago
  57. G1GAHURTZ

    @55:

I’m not sure that the console actually is profitable. Sure, Nintendo posted ¥7bn profit (Which is ‘only’ $70.6m. A far cry from the $2.8bn that they made in 2009), but I wonder how much of that was the Wii U, and how much was Wii/3DS sales.

Anyway, regarding E3, I still say that they need to be there. Backing out now is like Liverpool backing out of the FA Cup, because Man City and Man Utd have spent more money on players.

I think that the mainstream media would have reported on their conference, if they had one, and maybe that would have sold them a few more consoles to people who still don’t know the difference between a Wii and a Wii U.

Now it looks like that’s not going to happen.

And let’s be honest… They’re in no position to turn their noses up at any sales opportunity.

    #57 2 years ago
  58. SplatteredHouse

“The reasoning sounds like bullshit too.” – reaction to any attempt at message control/reasoning by Nintendo. EVER.

    #58 2 years ago
  59. viralshag

@57, You might be right about the console, I thought it was fact that they sold each console at a profit – I might have been completely wrong about that.

To continue your analogy, I see it more as a match between Man U and City, with Nintendo sitting in the stands hoping for some acknowledgement. Which still sounds kinda sad but I think that’s the positioning for the three companies at the moment.

For me at least, this E3 is going to be all about Sony and MS. Fair enough that might be because I’m not a huge fan of Ninty but I do like all gaming but as it stands the WiiU is just a side show to me at this point.

    I am still here M.K.

I just post less. I am awaiting the site redesign. Plus it is spring time here, so that can mean less time sitting behind the warm glow of the Moniter.

As for the article. I think it makes sense, what Nintendo is doing. I think they are lite on content, already showed off the hardware and features. What would they talk about?

And I like the shout into a hurricane analogy someone lnked to. No matter what Nintendo does or doesn’t do, this E3 will be all about XBnxt followed by PS4. Ask yourself this: the DS was one of the industries all time top selling systems…how many E3s were all about the DS?

My point would be to suggest that E3 noise doesn’t always benifit sales. E3 is an over the top blitz of glitz. Flashy. It can be important. Eps when unveiling a new piece of hardware. But for games? Not so sure. This E3 will really be all about PS4 and XBnxt. Beyond that? Meh.

I don’t think it hurts Nintendo not going all out. Not like they won’t be there. They just won’t have a preconference show. I say show your games. Let them speak for you. Low key makes sense to me.

I say it all of the time, how can Nintendo out MS or out Sony the other guys? They can’t. And I don’t think they should try. Both MS and Sony will undoubtly go all out. Who is going to remember much else anyway?

Nintendo: show your big hitters. Move on.

    #63 2 years ago
  64. aleph31

@OG: I mentioned the hurricane analogy, but the credit goes for the writer of the Ars Technica article that I linked in my post.

One question: do you really think Nintendo will be able to surprise anyone (press, fans, rest of us) with the games shown at E3? I mean, do you think they will manage to get a good line of renowned titles ready to show there? With sufficient development progress? That look innovative, and not a refurbished “Mario with moar coins” thing? Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon looks lovely, Wind Waker reboot visuals are really cool, but I think they would need much much more, and therefore that’s another point for a low profile presence at E3.

    #64 2 years ago
  65. monkeygourmet

lol at all the people complaining who bitch about EVERY E3 showing anyway! :)

I don’t think I really seen anyone praise an E3 conference for about 4 / 5 years weather it be Sony, MS or Nintendo!

People just like to bitch I guess!

The Latest Wii U Nintendo Direct being a prime example:

    Bayonetta 2
    Fire Emblem Crossover
    New Monolith RPG
    Yoshi Yarn
    Pikmin 3
    Wii U Virtual Console offers
New Mario U and Mario Kart at E3

    Shitloads of new 3DS stuff,

And still all bitching like a stuck record! lololol

“I would prefer it if people just said, no matter what Nintendo do, im personally upset the Wii U wasn’t much more powerful than the 360/PS3, therefore, I will never even give it a chance.”

    Having been thinking about this more;

Hosting smaller Nintendo Direct events over the E3 period can be a great tactic.

It enables Nintendo to be reactive to what ever Sony / MS show. They can have multiple announcements ready to go, and not have to worry about fitting it all into one big scripted reveal.

If Sony show certain things, Nintendo can respond or choose to hold things back.

It would enable a very ‘fluid’ method to showing new products or with holding things if MS for example has a lacklustre showing.

    Quote:

“We will share more information about them once they have officially been decided.

During the E3 period, we will utilize our direct communication tools, such as Nintendo Direct, to deliver information to our Japanese audience, including those who are at this financial briefing, mainly focusing on the software that we are going to launch in Japan, and we will take the same approach outside Japan for the overseas fans as well.”

If they follow this and are clever about getting reveals organised, it can mean continued exposure over the course of the week. Generally, the big shows have become a bit of a joke.

Why are there drinking games where you have to do a shot everytime someone from MS mentions ‘media’… etc… People generally take the piss out of the E3 stuff.

Anyway, it could be a great choice, it could blow hard. They need to make sure they have a lot of juicy morsals and deliver them over the course of the show as a disruption tactic.

@51 – Personally, I think Nintendo would do quite well as a third party publisher. They don’t have a Mario or a Zelda game every year, which is probably why they’d work so well on other systems. It’s not how you’d hold up hardware, but for software? A big title every three years or so would work out as a third party.
