EA Partners label to close

The EA Partners label, the contract-based publishing service for independent developers, is said to be closing.

Game Informer has apparently received “word from multiple anonymous sources close to the matter” regarding the closure. The Partners label is responsible for bringing the Crysis series, Shadows of the Damned, Alice: Madness Returns, Bulletstorm, Brutal Legend, the Rock Band series and more.

The news follows the departure of CEO John Riccitiello, recent layoffs around the world and the abandoning of relatively new Facebook titles from a studio that was acquired for $300 million.

    This doesn’t bode well. Rock Band is dead, Crysis 3 didn’t sell that well and the rest were bombs.

    Respawn game and Fuse are on the horizon and we know the latter doesn’t look too good. Does this mean the former is also in trouble after years of silence and stealth departure of a key member months ago?

    I wonder if this means that EA will now only publish in house EA owned studios games. They had a great relationship with many devs, but most of those games never really made alot of money.

    I would hate to see EA go back to “Safe” games only

    Not the biggest of suprises, considering none of those games did particulary well. But what will happen to Fuse and the Respawn game then?

    EA have said for a while that they want to publish less games in the next generation console cycle not to mention a majority of the games on the EA Partners label have fell short sales wise or have been rather mediocre. Don’t get me wrong there are exceptions like the Valve published games but I think this decision makes sense for EA.

    @9 – What EA say and do are two different things. They have said that they want to publish more games through out the year, instead of a mad rush in the final quarter – but that hasnt changed.

    I think EA need to look at the amount of talent they pay stupid money to just to promote their tat, the OTT promotional launches(FIFA) etc etc before firing some talented staff.

    I can see EA going back to how they were in most of the 90s – obsolete

    LOL, if the rumored partnership with Microsoft is true, then they’re dead and buried.
    I don’t spite EA like many of you guys do, so I would be sorry if EA dies.

    Though it’s pretty clear that publishers that forced their hands into consumers pocket (EA and Capcom) are having a bad time, because we aren’t cash cows.

    Wow! Some good titles there. Crysis was OK. And Alice and Brutal Legend were pretty awesome. Sad to see things happening this way.

    This was EA’s brand for external developers who retained the maximum freedom from EA. It was their attempt – a succesful one from a creative standpoint – of giving developers all the benefits from an EA marketing machine but none of the drawbacks from the EA corporate culture.

    You can’t hate on EA for being a corporate beast and be happy about this – not while retaining logical consistency, at least.

    @7 – The “EA Partners” initiative is aimed at indie developers.

    Last time I checked, Valve are not indie developers… Noob!
