Nintendo financials fall 50% short of target, ¥7 billion profit in 2012

Wednesday, 24 April 2013 09:15 GMT By Dave Cook

Nintendo has posted full-year profits of ¥7 billion for 2012, which is half of the company’s ¥14 billion projection. Regardless, this is an improvement over last year’s loss of ¥43.2 billion. The projection slump has been attributed to weak global sales of both Wii U and 3DS .

In short…

FY’13 sales of ¥635.4 billion, which is less than the company’s January prediction of ¥670 billion.

However, despite the slump Nintendo made a profit of ¥7 billion for the year, which is half of its ¥14 billion projection.

Nintendo only sold 390,000 Wii U consoles worldwide in the last three months. It expects to sell 9 million units in FY’14.

With 3DS, Nintendo hopes to sell 18 million handhelds and 80 million 3DS games in FY’14, and has issued a long list of new games on the horizon. Read below to see them all.

GI.biz reports that Nintendo has only sold 390,000 Wii U consoles worldwide in the past three months, while lifetime 3DS sales have surpassed 31 million.

Overall Nintendo has posted sales of ¥635.4 billion ($6.3 billion / £4.1 billion) which again falls short of the company’s January projection of ¥670 billion. There was also an operating loss of ¥36.4 billion ($364 million / £239.5 million).

Nintendo had expected to sell 4 million Wii U consoles by now, but it fell short at 3.45 million units. To date it has sold 13.42 million games for the system. By comparison Nintendo has sold some 95 million 3DS games to date and 14 million 3DS handhelds in 2012 alone.

Surprisingly, America was Nintendo’s top-performing region, with net sales totalling ¥236,665 million, with European sales of ¥169,887 million and Japanese sales of ¥208,944 million following.

The company now predicted it will sell 9 million Wii U consoles in financial year 2014 and 38 million games on the format. It also expects 3DS console sales to hit 18 million and predicts it will sell some 80 million games.

Projected net profits for financial year 2014 are now ¥55 billion and sales of ¥920 billion, suggesting Nintendo has some big IP on the way. We’re yet to see a new, 3D Mario game on the format, and there is also Pikmin 3, Zelda Wii U and a new Smash Bros. to look forward to.

The report says of new software, “During the next several months, Nintendo expects to launch new titles in the Mario Kart (Wii U), Super Mario Bros. (Wii U), Wii Fit (Wii U), Pikmin (Wii U), The Legend of Zelda (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS), Mario & Luigi (Nintendo 3DS) and Pokémon (Nintendo 3DS) franchises.

“These games, along with titles from Nintendo’s third-party publishing partners, will help drive hardware momentum and introduce new audiences to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms.”

Software stats show that New Super Mario Bros. 2 was Nintendo’s big win for the year at 6.42 million units sold worldwide, while Animal Crossing: New Leaf has sold – in Japan alone – over three million units, suggesting it could be a huge smash once it launches globally.

Here’s an infographic with more stats. Let us know what you think of the numbers below.

I mean, how many times has the industry done this to Nintendo?

“Oh, Nintendo. That won’t sell well, if at all. Moar graffixxxx! Moar powwaaaa!” soon becomes “Oh. Guess you guys aren’t doing too bad for yourselves, huh?”

Those that don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. You don’t have to like what Nintendo’s doing but to say that it’s not working for them when they post more profits than losses over the years and that Nintendo is “doomed” is quite laughable.

Well… I mean it was laughable but the anti-Nintendo jokes have really worn well and truly thin. Fact is: a bad day for Nintendo is still a good day numerically.

It’s not quite a “good day numerically”, if you are expecting to sell a certain amount, and fell short by 50%.

In fact, that’s a pretty big disaster.

It shows that you don’t know what people want, to the extent that you thought that twice as many people would want your product, as actually do.

You are clearly out of touch and heading in the wrong direction.

clearly nintendo will crash and burn and they will go the way of sega and make games for the REAL consoles now and no one will remember nintendo because they used to be good in the N64 days when I was a kid and I still played games for fun because now I want to be a (space) marine and shoot things because those are good games and nintendo does not make these so obviously I have grown up but nintendo has not and that means they are kiddy now but when I was a kid they were awesome and I don’t see why they can’t make a pokaman game thats like GTAV with big cities to explore but instead of hookers and pimps there would be pokymon and trainers and it would sell BILLIONS on the ps4 so I think it would be a really good idea for them to go the way of sega and make games for the REAL consoles now because no one will remember nintendo because they used to be good in the N64 days when I was…

I don’t see how the future isn’t looking to bright. If they can post 7 billion in profit while the Wii U and 3DS are slumping, imagine what they will do when the Wii U gets more games on the system.

Not to mention….you do know Monster Hunter 4 and Pokemon X and Y are coming out this year for the 3DS? I wonder how many units those two games will move?

Well, they have something to show. First stuff of new 3D Mario and Smash Brothers will be Shown at E3, and Mario Kart I guess. And some other stuff, but its still not really enough.

Its very curios. Nintendo is the longest Time in the Console Business, but the WiiU launch was like they are new. You need Games, a weak Line-Up and it will be very Hard. like 3DS didn’t sell very good at the Beginning because of a weak Line-Up. And now they Repeat that Mistake.

But maybe in 2 Years no one will care about that anymore. Because the WiiU start doing good like the 3DS, or because the WiiU is going under ^^

    Where is the Doomzed part?

No doubt the launches of both WiiU and 3DS strugled to move past core audiances. Btw, watch for the same thing with both PS4 and XBnxt, esp if they are priced 400usd or higher. But even with that in mind the company is holding their own.

Also no doubt that the WiiU will not sell like the Wii. Been saying that for awhile now. But I think Nintendo will be ok this gen. The strong 1st party line up and quality of titles are proven winners/sellers in every generation. Even alot of you guys would play their games if they were on your beloved systems. That seems crazy to me. You buy a game system because it has games you want to play. You don’t get pissed, call for the death of a company because said games aren’t on some other system. If you were nintendo(as in you owned the company) would you try to out MS the Xbox? Or out Sony the PS? Would you put your games on their systems? I wouldn’t. I would do exatly what Nintendo does. Offer something different(we already have two of the same type of systems XB/PS), and I would make my games the very best that they can be…on my own hardware.

Want to play Nintendo games, buy a Nintendo.

Imagine a gamer complaining about not being able to play Halo because they only want to buy a PS. Shouldn’t Sony be putting out Uncharted on the next XB?

I understand the wave of diluted drivel that will likly follow, most of it fanboy rage. From less powerful hardware to internet structure. At this point all tivial. The graphics are fantastic on WiiU. And believe it or not just yesterday I was playing CoD BlopsII(I actualy bought my first modern CoD game in years) Online and had zero problems. Was fast furious and rather fun.

But anyways, back to our regularly schedualed programing:

Ninty sux and are doomed. They will be software only in months, maybe weeks!

  33. Clupula

@30 – Shit. All joking aside, that comes off as a giant white flag from Nintendo when it comes to the Wii U. Everyone’s been saying, “Just wait until E3. Nintendo’s going to blow everyone away.” This says, “We know we won’t. We haven’t been able to secure many titles, so rather than embarrass ourselves, we’re stepping out.”

    #33 2 years ago
  34. G1GAHURTZ

    Definitely.

I don’t think they’ve ever missed an E3 before. E3 keynotes have always basically been a glorified mission statement that lets people know exactly why they should invest in your brand for the next 12 months.

Why should people invest in the Wii U, if Nintendo can’t even invest in the time it takes to put together a simple keynote on the biggest stage in gaming?

    It’s a complete capitulation.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. Gekidami

They wont have an E3 Keynote? Well damn, that is pretty terrible. I guess with those Nintendo Direct things they pretty much blew their load early. Thing is what they’ve been showing hasnt been all that impressive and missing E3? Thats just dumb.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. Clupula

@35 – Yeah, they’re trying to dress it up all nice and pretty by saying they’ll have a Nintendo Direct thing around E3, but let’s be honest here. That’s pre-emptive damage control. They know the major media won’t be looking at their Nintendo Direct, so they won’t have to hear that their E3 lineup is lackluster compared to the big guns Sony and Microsoft are going to be showing.

This says that not only do Nintendo not have guns to show, but instead, they have swords. And they’re made of wood. And they’re splintered and rotten.

not aimed at anyone personally but the ninty hate crowd in general. it is always the same anyway repeating and repeating. this nintendo hate going on everywhere…i don’t get it. wont comment on that bs much more either. mostly a bunch of males that are having a serious problem playing games THEY think are for kids only, not hardcore enough. their loss. in gaming and in life. you got to learn to scratch the surface. you got to learn to be true to yourself, to find out what you want and enjoy and not what others think of you. support nintendo guys, they still make some of the best videogames you can buy for your money. don’t think so? fine. no need for all the hate though especially because most of you guys are terribly uninformed and havent even played most of those great wii, ds and 3ds games. nintendo are doing fine. their business strategy is clever and works in the long run and most importantly their games are still great. got a problem playing kirby with a waggle stick together with your mom and both of you are having fun? well think about yourself. blame yourself and not nintendo. :)

    #37 2 years ago
  38. Bruno

@#37 yeah, but the thing is 95% of the games on Nintendo systems aren’t actually made by Nintendo and that non-Nintendo majority is mostly made up of 3rd party shovelware and bad ports (quick, try to name 5 games that Nintendo has actually developed themselves for WiiU). If you’re happy continuing to buy Nintendo systems that end up with no more than 5-10 worthwhile games during their generation, good for you I guess, but some people want more than that out of a gaming system.

You just need to learn to not get butthurt when people dont have the same opinion as you. Same goes for all of the other Cult of Miyamoto acolytes who think no matter what Nintendo does, no matter how dumb (like not having an E3 keynote) is awesome and should not be questioned or even mentioned.

@11 FYI #9′s use of “you’re” was correct, and I believe people that make structural errors due to phonetic similarities have a far lower comprehension of a language than ones that confuse articles. As one of their impostors, you should burn in the darkest pits of Grammar Nazi CCs.

And yes, I created an account just because you pissed me off.

@40 – Awwww, that’s cute. He’s bringing in his dad to defend him.

Anyway, if you actually had the reading comprehension you think you do, you’d see that I congratulated him using “you’re” in the proper context. It was his improper usage of “a/an” that I chided him on.

Anyway, welcome aboard. It’ll be nice to have another waterboy.

@41 My mistake, I must have skimmed over that critical ‘then’.
I guess the joke’s on me now ^^
    Apologies for the unwarranted insult.
