Injustice uses free content to solve DLC compatibility issues

Rather than put optional content on disc for Injustice: Gods Among Us, NetherRealm has chosen to issue free DLC updates to avoid compatibility issues between players online.

Speaking with GameInformer, studios boss Ed Boon said the fighter's 100-strong costume catalogue gave the team some wriggle room to give a few away for free.

"Giving people costumes is the way we can push the other content. For instance, if you download Lobo, we want it so you can play Lobo against me, but I need to have the Lobo content on my machine for you to use him against me. The way we're going to do that is to give away costumes," he explained.

"When you get your free costumes, you'll also get the necessary content to be compatible with everyone, so there's no issue of people not having downloads."

When prompted, Boon agreed that this decision is consumer-friendly.

"That's really what the goal is. We don't want people to download something and not get something out of it. So we're giving them these free skins," he said.

Capcom ran into trouble over the last few years for shipping DLC on-disc to reduce compatibility issues, and has gone off the practice thanks to backlash - except in the case of free updates.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is out now on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US and Australia, and arrives in Europe on April 19. It is reviewing well.
