Dark Souls 2 – 12 minute gameplay demo is live

The 12 minute gameplay video of Dark Souls 2 is up on IGN, along with the screenshots the site posted this morning – which have also leaked onto the net. Go have a watch through here. Dark Souls 2 is expected on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in late 2013 or early 2014. A second trailer is below courtesy of AGB (thanks, EdNorton).

    Bloody hell, this looks absolutely amazing! BAM! DAY-1! Just like that.

    Every single problem I had with Dark/Demon’s Souls seems to have been fixed. The art-direction is much more appealing while it still keeping its unique style, the environments are beautiful. And it is true what they said, it looks much more cinematic, without any cutscenes. For example the dead dragon and the Hippopotamus-Troll.

    The ugly and lazy graphics seem to be gone and the scene with the dragons flying through the air? Mind-blowing awesomeness.

    It seems they kept most of the combat but made the difficulty less lazy.

    Although, I think it’s a little bit too early to talk about difficulty, because the character clearly seems to be a little bit overpowered and is probably that way so the developer is able to show us something without completely focusing on the combat.

    Truth be told, I do hope it’s more accessible this time, than the previous games. By that I don’t mean easier, but at least have less lazier enemy attack patterns and all that.

    I want to see the PVP system before making a decision, the enemies are way more challenging for what I have seen (THEY CAN COUNTER YOU) but the level design looks boring, and dragons… OH WHY DRAGONS?

    @3 Lazy isn’t what I’d call Dark Souls. It didn’t have any where near the budget this has, and the attack patterns were fair but maybe not glamorous. It was pitch perfect.

    Now, my thoughts on DS2:

    Graphics have taken a massive step up, really looks brilliant and the art style is great and I like the return of the Demon Soul’s style Gothic dungeons. Like the new player animations, makes the guy feel more hulkier, bit more of a bruiser.

    The downside is that they seem to want to impress us a lot with big areas, not sure if this will make it feel less cohesive. DS was like a tapestry the way the level’s funnelled into each other.

    Another concern I have is the removal of the Estus Flask. I loved this change for Dark Souls from Demon’s. In Demon’s you could just farm tons of health pots and just spam them out on tough battles, or end up using them all and just getting lamed because you can’t heal. The flask made the levels between each bonfire a more pitched battle. You knew you have 5/10 drinks to get to the boss and beat him and really pushed you into upping your game to win, making you figure out and master each level to a fine detail.

    Really not sure about the cheap insta-deaths they’ve put in now. The point of Dark Souls was to have all the deaths be the fault of the player, but killing him when crossing a bridge seems a little cruel, as does the little baddies that lump you off the side of a building for an instakill. Any instakills in DS were always fairly heavily sign posted.

    I do think I am just looking for a reason to deflate my expectations to be honest. I utterly loved both Demon’s and Dark Souls from start to finish, but with two new directors and little involvement from the original it seems like we’ll have to just take it on faith From Software made the right choice.

    I think estus flasks are still in the game. They said that in the IGN QnA if I’m not mistaken. The rest are fair points, though I personally love the big environments.

    I liked it. Compared to dark souls, the graphics did improve, obviously, but it didn’t really stand out for me. I feel it’s much more about the art direction then the graphics. In the end, I’m looking for gameplay, and the demo really pleased me, it seems improved and yet with the same feel we got from previous games.

    Although there are aspects of demon souls that I miss, Dark souls was a big step up for me, and I’m pretty sure the second one will be the same compared to the first.

    I also thought the character was pretty overpowered for demonstration purposes. Loved the enemies shown.

    I didn’t pay much attention, but I thought I heard in the second video, in the interview, that there would still be eastus flasks. I hope so, it was far better then the “potion” system.

    One thing I didn’t like in the screenshots was the armors, they look exactly like some from dark souls (wanderer, knight and elite knight), I would prefer all new designs.

    Sorry, but I can’t take this kind of Fanboy bullshit serious.

    It was far from perfect.

    As much as I love the game (Mostly for its insane lore and dark setting), lazy is the #1 word that comes to my mind when I think about Dark Souls. Be it the poor optimization, the horrendous PC Port, the fighting or the art-direction. Blighttown still stands as one of the worst levels in videogame history and not because of how “challenging” it was.

    It was lazy. The framerate drops into the single digits on PS3 and then they spam enemies at you. One of them uses a single 2D graphic for its fire-breath. How is that not lazy?

    But to the combat. My main problem was just how unfitting and lazy the animations were and how bad their timing was. You had fat enemies that could fight faster than skinny ones. You had giants who would swing their huge weapons at you, you’d roll to the side, yet somehow they can redirect their attack in mid-air, eventually hitting you. 1-Hit Grab attacks that track you?

    This is just a dumb and lazy way to ramp up the difficulty.

    Which will hopefully not happen here. The animations are already better, thanks to motion capture.

    Erm, DS was full of those as well. Remember your introduction to Mimics? Not enough health to open a chest? YOUR FAULT! Bed Of Chaos knocking you into a hole? Your fault! Archers from Anor Londo. Your fault.

    Demon’s Souls had much, much less of those. They should take it a step back and look Demon’s Souls in terms of difficulty.

    btw have you finished the game?
    anyway.. that dragon castle was like mind blowing….Day 1 for me. the only thing i hope is that they have more bad-ass characters like ornstien, and artorias and that crystal dragon.

    Totally agree with the “NO DON’T ATTACK FROM BEHIND, HE HAS A FUCKING SHELL” part. I just wish the player didn’t do so much damage to that enemy. His shell should have acted like the armored boar from DS1. Of course the player damage and resistance might have been tweaked just for the sake of demo.

    No shit, Sherlock. That’s exactly what I’m talking about, that’s a lazy way of upping the difficulty. Remember oldschool games from the 90′s didn’t have to ‘cheat’ in order to deliver hard difficulty.

    I completed both, Dark Souls (Also the DLC) and Demon’s Souls.

    @15: You mean use a crack? GFWL was the least of its problems.

    @21 Yeah it has a retarded key mapping, and uses xbox controller indicators, like press LT to perform stronger attack. And GFWL prevents me from online features, there were times that I needed help, and there were times that my brother needed help and with that shit we can’t actually tag alone with one another and help each other out.

    @22: Dunno, I played the entire game offline. Looked up multiple wikis to get the best strategies and the most important secrets and then played it without any lies written on the ground.

    Good to see I’m not the only person that seems to not take a strong liking of this game either. It can be fun and it is refreshing to have a game challenge you nowadays, but this game is difficult for the WRONG reasons. The art style is bland and boring, the corridors are so catastrophically narrow and straightforward, you sometimes don’t feel assed to look around for anything. The fighting in this game can be downright atrocious and cheap, especially when the frame rate starts dipping. I should’t be 20 hours into a game and be killed by one cheap shot from an enemy I fought when I was a weakling. Because of the frame rate, your timing is so hit or miss, the whole game becomes more work and a chore than fun after a while. I still don’t see the appeal of this series. Not to mention, the only pay off you got was a pat on the back for getting through an area; I’m not asking Christina Hendricks blow me, but there was no reward or incentive to keep playing AT ALL after a while.
