Ouya responds to negative console reviews

Monday, 8 April 2013 16:01 GMT By Dave Cook

Ouya has responded to a wave of negative reviews after a handful of sites got their hands on early consoles sent out to Kickstarter backers. The company has promised that said negative issues will have been remedied by the time the final console builds hit retailers on June 4.

The reviews began last week and pointed out a raft of technical and stability issues, as well as a lack of marquee games on the marketplace. You can read both reviews here.

In a statement sent to GI.biz, an Ouya rep stressed that he early consoles were not fit for press review and that a second press wave of units will go out in line with the console’s general sale on June 4. It begs questions as to why the early consoles sent to paying backers were missing features in the first place.

The message reads, “We will be making Ouya review units available in early to mid-May so that you are able to review the more complete consumer experience and prepare your coverage in time for the June 4th retail launch.

“To clarify for you – Ouya has sent no review units out to press. Any reviews you have seen online are a result from individuals who received early backer units from supporting our Kickstarter.”

What do you think of the above? Should the console have been delayed to allow for polish, or is this OK as long as Ouya remedies the issues? Let us know below.

Thanks MCV.

So they sent out an unfinished piece of hardware to the backers and say “hey, don’t worry guys, this is not the finished hardware” so do they plan on sending backers the updated version? This is why I didn’t back this kickstarter because there is no way to regulate this type of crap.

Assumptions galore! I am guessing they just need to make software fixes, it’s too late in the day to be changing hardware.

    #7 2 years ago
  8. Phoenixblight

    @5

Most of the issues that the console has are not software based nor would they be resolved by a firmware update.

Also I find it unbelievable they will have all these issues resolved in 60 days. Even if they put their workers to work 7 days a week for 20 hours they wouldn’t meet the goals.

    #8 2 years ago
  9. silkvg247

@8 Depends, some programmers pretend an hours work takes a day just because they’re lazy, then the same people suddenly can work 10 times faster when push comes to shove. We don’t know the severity of the issues. Really, all anyone can do is guess.

This thing looked like a complete waste of time and energy from day 1, and it’s proving to be so.

You don’t send people an unfinished product. End of story.

What does MS have to do with anything? The MS programmers i’ve met are extremely talented. Granted they are biased towards MS products, but really, what software engineer isn’t biased?

    #12 2 years ago
  13. Phoenixblight

    @12

Because MS is a console manufacturer people are thinking that Ouya and its team can pull off what MS can do in 60 day. This console is riddled with issues that a small team of programmers won’t be able to hammer down in 60 days.

    #13 2 years ago
  14. silkvg247

I’m confused.. the small team of android programmers who have developed it from the ground-up are somehow worse placed than a bunch of MS proggies? Wut?

Do you guys even code? Do you know that sometimes more is less? Do you know that two programmers can’t realistically work on the same module together?

@13 Are you some whackjob MS fanboy? MS aren’t a console manufacturer. They are a corporation that mainly writes software with a sub division that has thus far produced a grand total of two (pretty shit) consoles.

    #14 2 years ago
  15. Phoenixblight

    @14

Nope not a fan boy. THey have programmers that handle the Xbox component whether you believe it or not is irrelevant.

Are you a Ouya fanboy? See I can play that game too.

“I’m confused.. the small team of android programmers who have developed it from the ground-up are somehow worse placed than a bunch of MS proggies? Wut?”

Thanks for reading into it but that is not what I meant. THey have a handful of programmers and there are issues across the entire system.

“Do you guys even code? Do you know that sometimes more is less? Do you know that two programmers can’t realistically work on the same module together?”

Coding is 70% of my work. I never said anything about programmers working on the same aspect. In that remark programmers don’t work in a vacuum either you can use others libraries and functions for your module. Does putting words in other’s mouth always work in an argument?

Have to agree with G1GA on this one, I never saw any point to this console and I would never have funded this on KS. Way too early in the life of KS and its gaming love affair to invest in a console. I want to see some of the games I have put money towards first…

    #16 2 years ago
  17. silkvg247

@15 Not a fangirl of any console actually, PC ftw!

I just don’t get the insistence that slapping MS in front of programmer makes you any better placed, especially when talking android.

So in other words I would have found your comment plausible if it said they simply didn’t have enough programmers. And even then you are guessing, you don’t know the work required for each issue. Or do you?

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Phoenixblight

“I just don’t get the insistence that slapping MS in front of programmer makes you any better placed, especially when talking android.”

You are taking it too literally. I am was just basing it on the numbers not the quality. THere is no way to compare quality.

“And even then you are guessing, you don’t know the work required for each issue. Or do you?”

General knowledge of what it would take along with a good group of programmer friends who have worked with hardware which all of them have agreed the issues this console have would take more than 60 days to hammer down which is ignoring the lack of games and support.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. silkvg247

@18 Yes but even so you’re assuming to know the engine that they’ve written. It could be super elegant, with reusable code libraries and small changes to fix big problems. Yes I am being the optimist to your pessimist, I know, but it’s nice to have a bit of both. ;)

    #19 2 years ago
  20. Phoenixblight

    @19

Yes I know I can be a pessimist but I find it to be pleasantly surprised than crushed. I really do hope this does well especially for the indie developers but all the arrows point to “No”.

    #20 2 years ago
  21. salarta

The only reviews I’ve seen thus far mention things that could be fixed in software and operating system updates. The only one that looks like it could technically be a hardware issue is controller lag, but there’s no absolute certainty that the problem isn’t just yet more issues with the software.

I don’t see how this is a problem. They’re going to update and fix the issues the console has. I think the people that are instantly slamming it just because it has problems on early Kickstarter release are people that were hoping the project would fail. It gives them an excuse to pull the “See, I told you so” card.

    #21 2 years ago
  22. Phoenixblight

    @21

So then if you buy a game and it doesn’t work the first day do you say “It’s ok they’ll patch it and everything will be better”?

You don’t sell or give a product that isn’t finished to someone that has paid for the product, I don’t care how much the manufacturer promises everything will be fixed later at some point.

    #22 2 years ago
  23. salarta

@22: We’re dealing with a different case. The initial release is solely for Kickstarter backers, who backed the project for what it could become and lead to, not for instant gratification. Kickstarter backers are essentially getting an early taste of what will officially launch later in the year. This company also is not Sony or Microsoft. They do not have billions of dollars and immense time to devote solely to quality assurance. They have costs all over the place. This means backers are also going to be people that help the company tweak the console to perfection, not merely consumers that buy a product and should expect absolute perfection day one.

If the final official release is horrible then I’d say there’s good reason to complain. As it stands, this is like someone whining that they got into an alpha build of an MMO and there are bugs.

    #23 2 years ago
  24. Phoenixblight

“Kickstarter backers are essentially getting an early taste of what will officially launch later in the year.”

They paid for the device that had features that were promised to be given which the system is missing half of them.If I paid 100$ for a device that says it has x,y,z and I plug it in and only see it has x I would be pissed. If this is an early taste it would be like eating raw meatballs before having them cooked and made into the spaghetti.

Its bad no matter how you slice and the reviews of it will only do more damage no matter how much Ouya company try to do PR damage control. BTW the system is aimed to release in June you act like it has a 6 months to go until release.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. silkvg247

@24 And if those features aren’t there by the official launch, then people can complain. I don’t see why anyone can complain about early access not having the full features.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. OlderGamer

“So then if you buy a game and it doesn’t work the first day do you say “It’s ok they’ll patch it and everything will be better”?

You don’t sell or give a product that isn’t finished to someone that has paid for the product,”

Too many examples to list here. It happens all of the time. Rush it now, patch/fix it later. Wasn’t there some info regaurding knowledge at MS about knowing of RRoD before launching? Tin foil hat might be needed on that one, but my point stands….it happens all of the time.

Also(Edit), alot of time consoles do launch with promised features “Coming soon”. I personaly wonder if PS4 launches with Giakia, no doubt XB720 will also have features added in later. Granted features and fully working can mean different things. But alot of products fix issues post launch. And this console hasen’t even launched yet.

I find it amazing how people that didn’t back the project and clearly had no interest in it at any point think they know how people that did back it feel about these developments. It’s just kind of funny to see people actively dismiss what people that actually backed the project are saying, then turn around and claim to know what backers think (and that coincidentally, backers are somehow guaranteed to be upset). It’s like a Mormon saying they’re not offended by Book of Mormon, only for someone that isn’t even Mormon but hates Stone and Parker to tell them to shut up, then subsequently claim that all Mormons hate Book of Mormon.

The hardware is final. The Software is just an early build, and the backers get more of a voice to shape the software into what they want it to be. Just like the Xbox and PS3 interfaces evolved into (mostly) better versions, so will the Ouya’s. But consoles are a tricky beast, and something people go up in arms over….and so far most people seem to love to hate the Ouya. There look to be some pretty good looking games on the horizon, but for now we’ll have to wait to see what this thing is actually capable of. It’s weird that people are getting so upset at the sheer fact that others might buy this thing, or backed it. I backed it, and I have no issue with the current state of things. Then again if the thing caught fire I’d just use it to make smores, really expensive smores. So in answer to the original question, yeah I don’t care either way. It’ll come down to the games, and most of the good sounding/looking ones are too far out to call it on. Funny that all this press is probably just going to increase their retail sales from the name being more out there.

@41: A lot of people seem to be pissy about the idea that a game marketed as a console that brings mobile games into the living room could become successful. I think a lot of it is a flawed assumption that because Ouya is built on a philosophy where the games don’t need to be headed by huge companies that spend countless millions on development, this means that it’s encouraging companies to push toward the lowest common denominator and that this will lower quality in video games.

In reality, it’s more likely to improve quality on account of making it clear that games don’t need to be cheap interactive knockoffs of Hollywood, and that games of genuine value will rise to the top over games that are shoddily made just to make a quick buck. In essence, I think the hatred some of the people on here have toward Ouya is borne out of deep-seated fear that it’s going to succeed, mixed with their mistaken impressions of Ouya “ruining” the industry. It makes no sense either, when we consider that the film industry survives perfectly well with both idiotic Hollywood blockbusters as well as more intellectual and artistic lesser-knowns.

    #44 2 years ago
  45. Dagnabulous

@44 Agreed. I think we’ll see some really good games come out of this. There will be alot of crap as well, to be sure, but without all the fees and red tape attached to the big name consoles we’ll see some games that might not have been made otherwise.

    #45 2 years ago
  46. G1GAHURTZ

I might be missing something here, but I’m pretty sure that this ‘console’ is just a smartphone in a box, without the phone. It even runs an outdated version of Android that most people here would probably turn their noses up at if they were looking for a new phone.

So how can “really good games come out of this”, if “this” is nothing more than a tiny part of the entire Android ecosystem in the first place?

It’s a complete waste of money. It’s like taking all of the text messaging functionality out of a smartphone, putting it in a cheap box, and charging $99 for it, so that people can text from their sofa.

The vast majority of Android games are not only advert ridden freeware, but specifically designed to be played on a cheap smartphone. Why would it be a good idea to put that on your TV? On top of that, The Verge reported that all games on the thing are “free”, so you end up getting bombarded with ‘buy the full version’ pop up boxes.

I’m struggling to understand how some people around here are going to spend time complaining about MS’s advertising, or micro transactions, then support this kind of ‘bully til you buy’ setup.

^ They said they are going to release a new box every year. Who in the hell wants to keep upgrading to a new box every year….oh thats right cell phone users who can take their cell phones with them at all times. This thing is going to be going up against phones this year that will out power the PS3 very soon. I just hate that this company is going to steal all that money and run away when this fails. The Enron of the gaming industry right here.

Stop helping these people get rich by donating your hard earned money for junk metal that you could build your own self with recyclable old phone parts.

    For real.

I think the problem is that people thought that they could use this product to give a ‘middle finger’ to the big companies, and make a statement about rising prices and DRM issues.

While that’s not necessarily a bad thing in itself, the problem is that this was clearly the wrong product to back.

So instead of getting one over on the big companies, people have just thrown their money away, and made the situation even worse.

And I agree with you, tea. One of the biggest problems with KS, is that there’s no accountability.

You can take people’s money, make a complete mess of your project, and walk away laughing.

@46 No, it’s not like a smartphone in a box. You cannot text, call, or play games from the Android store. It’s like calling a laptop or tablet “basically a smartphone”, even though the hardware is in all of the above mentioned devices (The Tegra 3 is a good chipset, with a quad-core processor on-board).
Also, all the games aren’t free, some are just demos with the option to buy. It’s basically the same system that xbox uses for the indie section. Some games will have micro-transactions, sure, but not all.

@47 The hardware will get a new version every year, true, but you don’t have to GET a new version every year. Android games will play on android devices, regardless of version. So you will still be able to play newer games on the first Ouya 1,2, or three years from now. It’s just like computer games; just because a new video card or Proc comes out doesn’t mean your older PC won’t play a new game. It may not be as fast as the cutting edge stuff, but it will play just fine.

@48 There is accountability on Kickstarter; See the case of “Seth Quest”. He didn’t deliver, he got sued, all the backers got their money back. He was bankrupted because he mishandled the KS funds. So no, you can’t make a mess of a project and walk away laughing. If they don’t deliver what they advertise, they are still legally liable.

What’s funny is even the retail Ouya still had the same issues. So they obviously didn’t fix anyway and those were probably the final systems. The controller is a disaster.
